Chapter 8 - THE WARNING

I grabbed my phone and dialed Elena’s number immediately.
It went straight to voicemail.
“Elena,” I said, my voice tight and sharp. “Stay away from my house. Stay away from Sophie. The police know everything. And I have proof. Do not come near us.”
I ended the call and rushed to Sophie’s room.
She was sitting on the floor, quietly patching the torn seam of her bear with a needle and thread. Her small fingers moved slowly and carefully. She looked up when I burst in.
“Daddy? Are we in trouble?”
I knelt beside her and took her hands gently.
“No, baby. We are not in trouble. But we need to go. Right now.”
“Where are we going?”
“Somewhere safe. Somewhere no one can find us.”
I packed a bag quickly—clothes for Sophie, important documents, the USB drive, and Claire’s bear. I grabbed Sophie’s hand and walked her out to the car.
As I pulled out of the driveway, another car passed me going the opposite direction.
A silver sedan.
I recognized it instantly.
Elena’s car.
She was coming to the house.
I gripped the steering wheel and did not stop. I did not turn back. I kept driving straight ahead while she pulled into my driveway.
Through the rearview mirror, I saw her step out of the car. She walked to my front door. She rang the bell. She waited.
Then she looked around. She saw my car was gone.
And she stood there on my porch, perfectly still, staring at the empty driveway.
Even from this distance, I could feel her anger. Cold and sharp.
She knew I had taken Sophie. She knew I had taken the proof. And she knew I would not be coming back.
I drove until the house was far behind us.
Sophie sat quietly in the backseat, clutching the bear.
“Daddy… is Aunt Elena bad?”
I swallowed hard.
“I don’t know, Sophie. I hope not. But right now… we can’t take any chances.”
“Will she find us?”
I looked in the mirror again.
“She will try. But I will not let her take you. Not ever.”
I drove to a small cabin three hours away. A place my parents had owned years ago. A place Elena didn’t even remember we still had.
It was quiet there. Surrounded by trees. No neighbors close by.
When we arrived, I carried Sophie inside and made her comfortable. I checked every window. Locked every door. Pushed heavy furniture against the front and back entrances.
Then I sat down at the small wooden table and opened the laptop again.
There was more on this drive than I had realized.
Files I hadn’t seen yet. Letters. Photos. Timelines.
Claire had been gathering evidence for months. She had tracked every transfer. Every forgery. Every time Elena had accessed our accounts. She had written down dates, times, conversations. Everything.
And at the very end… one final letter. Dated the day she died.
I opened it with trembling hands.
*“My dearest Adrian,”*
*“If you are reading this, then Elena knows. She knows you found the proof. She knows what she stands to lose. Please… do not try to reason with her. She will not listen. She believes everything she is doing is right. She believes she deserves this money more than Sophie does. She thinks we took what should have been hers.”*
*“She has always been jealous, Adrian. Always. Even as children. She felt she deserved more. More attention. More praise. More money. I tried to help her. I tried to give her chances. But it was never enough.”*
*“She will come for Sophie. Because Sophie is the only heir. If something happens to Sophie… everything reverts to you. And Elena believes she can convince you to give it to her. Or take it from you once you are broken and grieving.”*
*“Do not let her get close to our daughter. Do not trust her words. Do not believe her tears. She is very good at both.”*
*“Protect Sophie. Run. Hide. Give this proof to the authorities and let them handle it. Elena will not stop. Not until she has everything. Or until she is stopped.”*
*“I love you both more than I can say. Forgive me. I tried to handle it myself. I thought I could change her. I thought family meant something.”*
*“I was wrong.”*
The letter ended there.
I closed the laptop slowly.
Claire had known everything. She had known Elena’s motivation. Her jealousy. Her greed. Her dangerous obsession.
And she had hidden it all away in a bear because she knew Elena would never understand what a mother’s love really looked like.
Elena saw only a toy.
May you like
Claire saw a fortress.
And now… Elena was coming for us.
