Chapter 19 - HEALING

Life slowly returned to something resembling normal.
We moved back into our home. The broken door was replaced. The scratches and bruises faded from Sophie’s skin. But nothing was ever exactly the same.
I changed the locks. I updated every legal document. I moved everything into a secure account under the supervision of three trusted trustees—Marcus, Lila, and Mr. Henderson. No single person would ever hold that much power over Sophie’s future again.
Sophie grew. She healed. She stopped waking up screaming in the middle of the night. She returned to her laughter and her songs and her bright, curious questions.
But she was different too. There was a quiet wisdom in her eyes now. A gravity beyond her years. She understood that people were complicated. That those who looked most gentle could sometimes be dangerous. That love was not enough to excuse wrongdoing.
One evening, we sat together on the living room floor. She was brushing the fur of her teddy bear, carefully, lovingly.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Mommy knew everything would happen, didn’t she?”
I thought about it.
“She suspected. She prepared. She made sure you would be safe. But I don’t think she wanted it to happen. She loved Aunt Elena too. She hoped… she hoped Elena would choose to be good.”
Sophie was quiet for a moment.
“Elena chose wrong.”
“Yes. She did.”
“Mommy’s bear chose right.”
I smiled and pulled her close.
“Yes. He did. Because Mommy chose you. And she trusted you to keep her safe.”

Sophie hugged the bear.
“I will keep her safe forever.”
