Chapter 14 - THE BREAKING POINT

Elena stared at her niece. For a long moment, I thought she would lunge. I thought she would grab the paper, grab the bear, and run.
Instead, she sank slowly into a chair. She buried her face in her hands.
“It isn’t fair,” she whispered. “None of it was ever fair.”
I set the poker down. I moved Sophie gently behind me.
“Elena… stop this. Walk away now. Before it becomes something you can never undo.”
She looked up. Tears streamed down her face. Real tears. Not the performative kind.
“Do you know what it was like, Adrian? Growing up in this house? Always second? Always the quieter sister? The less talented one? When Claire came along… she was perfect. Everyone loved her. And then she died… and even then… she was still perfect. Still watching over you. Still protecting Sophie. And me… I was still just… Elena.”
“You were loved,” I said.
“Loved second!” She stood up, voice rising. “Always second! And then the money… the trust… everything arranged so neatly for your perfect little family… while I struggled! While I worked three jobs! While I watched you live the life I should have had!”
“So you stole from a child?”
“I tried to take what would eventually be mine anyway!” Elena cried. “I thought… if I could just rearrange things… if I could just make it so that when Sophie grew up… she would share. She would understand. She would give me what I needed! I never meant to hurt her! I never meant for Vanessa to pull her hair or throw that bear away! I told Vanessa to search! Only to search! I never told her to hurt anyone!”
She wrapped her arms around herself, shivering.
“Vanessa got greedy. She started making demands. She said she wanted half. She said she would tell you everything if I didn’t pay. So I pushed her to find the bear faster. I told her to tear it apart if she had to. But I never… I never thought she would hurt Sophie.”
“You used her,” I said coldly. “You used a stranger to search your brother’s house. To hurt your niece. All because you felt entitled to what Claire and I built.”
“I was desperate!” Elena stepped toward me, hands outstretched. “And I can fix it! Adrian, please… give me the drive and the note. Just for a little while. Let me fix the mistakes. I will pay everything back. Every penny. I will sign whatever you want. Just… don’t let them take me away. Don’t let everyone know what I did. I can’t… I can’t bear the shame.”
She reached out and touched my arm. Her hand was cold and trembling.
“Please, Adrian. For the sake of our parents. For the sake of the family we used to be. Help me one last time. Let me walk away.”
I looked at her. At the sister I had loved all my life. At the woman who had forged our names, lied, and endangered my daughter.
And then I looked down at Sophie. Standing straight and brave behind me, still clutching that tattered bear.
Claire had known this moment would come. She had known I would stand here and feel that old, familiar love warring with what was right.
That was why she had hidden the truth in two places. One for me to understand. And one for Sophie to hold.
I gently pulled my arm free.
“I’m sorry, Elena.”
Her face crumpled.
“Adrian… no…”
“The police are on their way. I called them before you broke the door down. They will be here any minute.”
Elena stared at me. Her eyes widened.
“You called them?”
“I had to. You left me no choice.”
She backed away slowly. Her gaze darted to the broken door. To the window. To the drive still on the table.
For a heartbeat, I thought she would run.

Instead, she sank back into the chair. All the fight went out of her. She covered her face with her hands and began to weep.
“I destroyed everything,” she sobbed. “I was so jealous… I destroyed everything.”
