Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH ABOUT MY SON

I don’t know how long I sat there.
The papers lay scattered across the kitchen table, those terrible words staring back at me. **NO BIOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP.** 99.99% MATCH.
Caleb wasn’t my son.
He was Marcus Hale’s son.
I thought back to that week seven years ago. The business conference. The phone calls. Elena’s voice, quiet and trembling, telling me everything was fine, don’t come home early, I’ll see you when you get back. She had been alone. Terrified. And Vanessa—her trusted assistant—had been standing right beside her, helping her hide the truth.
“Adrian,” Martin said quietly. “We need to call the police.”
I shook my head slowly.
“No. If we call the police… they’ll give him back to Marcus. He’s the biological father.”
Martin fell silent.
“He’s six years old,” I said, my voice breaking. “He calls me Daddy. He loves me. I’m the only father he has ever known. I raised him. I held him when he was sick. I taught him how to ride a bike. And now… now I’m supposed to just hand him over to a man like Marcus?”
“No,” Martin said. “Never. But we need to understand what happened. Why did Elena keep him? Why didn’t she tell Marcus?”
I looked at the note from the locket. He doesn’t know yet. And he must never find out.
Elena had written that note. She had hidden the truth from Marcus. She had hidden it from me. She had raised Caleb as my own to keep him safe.
Which meant… Marcus didn’t know. He didn’t know the test results said he was the father. He didn’t know Elena had kept the truth. He thought Caleb was mine. He thought he had to take him by force.
Vanessa knew.
Vanessa had known all along.
She had moved into my life to find proof. To find the DNA test. To prove to Marcus that Caleb was his. And then they would take him.
My phone buzzed on the table. A text message. From Vanessa.
**VANESSA:** You found the papers. I know you did.
My fingers trembled as I typed back.
**ME:** Why didn’t you tell me? Why let me love him for six years only to take him away?
**VANESSA:** Because Elena stole him. She took what belonged to my brother. She lied to everyone. She lied to YOU.
**ME:** She protected him. From Marcus. From you.
**VANESSA:** Marcus has rights. And when he finds out the truth… he will come for his son. And no one will be able to stop him.
I stared at the screen.
**ME:** If you tell him… I will fight you. Every step of the way. I will fight this in every court in the country.
**VANESSA:** You will lose, Adrian. He is not yours. And when Marcus realizes what Elena did… he will not just take Caleb. He will make sure you pay for hiding him all these years.
I put the phone down.
Martin was watching me.
“They’re going to tell him,” I said. “And then they’re going to come for Caleb.”
“Then we leave,” Martin said simply. “Today. Before they have time to act.”
I looked up the stairs, toward Caleb’s bedroom. Toward the boy who wasn’t mine, but who was my whole world.
I thought about running. About hiding. About disappearing where no one could find us.
But then I thought about Elena. She ran. She hid. And they found her anyway.
If I run… they will hunt us forever. And Caleb will spend his whole life looking over his shoulder, wondering who he really is, wondering why we are hiding.
He deserves better than that.
He deserves the truth. And he deserves to know that no matter what a piece of paper says… I am his father. And I will never let him go.
I stood up and picked up the papers. I folded them carefully and put them back into the envelope.
“No,” I said. “We don’t run.”
“Adrian—”
“They want a fight?” I said, my voice steady and cold. “Fine. We give them a fight. But this time… I’m going to be ready.”
I pulled out my phone and dialed Vanessa’s number. She answered on the first ring.
“Adrian,” she said. “Don’t do anything stupid.”
“Listen to me,” I said. “I know everything. I know the DNA results. I know Caleb is Marcus’s son. And I know Elena hid him to keep him safe.”
She went silent.
“You can tell Marcus,” I continued. “Tell him whatever you want. But tell him this. If he comes near my son… if he tries to take him… I will destroy him. I will expose every secret you have. I will find out what really happened to Elena. And I will make sure neither of you ever see the light of day.”
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“You don’t know what you’re threatening, Adrian. Marcus isn’t the one you should be afraid of.”
“Then tell me who I should be afraid of,” I challenged. “Tell me who Elena was hiding him from. Who is the real danger?”
Vanessa hesitated. And then she whispered, so quietly I almost missed it:
“His grandfather.”
The line went dead.
I stood there holding the phone, my heart pounding.
Grandfather.
Somewhere out there… there was a man who had enough power and enough influence to terrify Elena. To terrify Vanessa. To terrify Marcus.
And that man didn’t just want custody of Caleb.
May you like
He wanted control.
And he had been waiting seven years to get it.
