Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE THAT BROKE MY HEART

I walked out of the bank with a fire burning in my chest.
Everything had changed. The confusion, the doubt, the agony of wondering whether I had the right to love my own son—it was all gone. Elena had proven what my heart had always known.
Caleb was mine.
Silas was a liar. A thief. A man who had falsified scientific evidence, destroyed records, manipulated his own children, and kidnapped a six-year-old boy to steal an inheritance.
And now I had the proof to destroy him.
But I had to be careful. Silas had Caleb. If I moved too fast… if I alerted him before I was ready… he could disappear with my son. He could hide him somewhere I would never find.
I needed to know where Silas was keeping him. I needed to know he was safe. And then… I would bring the whole corrupt structure crashing down around Silas’s head.
That evening, I called Vanessa.
She answered on the third ring. Her voice was tight, guarded.
“Adrian. You shouldn’t be calling me.”
“Listen to me,” I said. “And listen carefully. I know everything.”
She went silent.
“You know what?”
“I know the DNA test was fake. I know Silas paid off the doctor. I know he manufactured the evidence to steal Caleb from me. And I know Elena left the real proof. I have it, Vanessa. Every single document. Every signature. Every confession.”
Vanessa didn’t speak. But I heard her breath catch.
“Silas lied to you,” I continued. “He lied to Marcus. He lied to everyone. Caleb isn’t Marcus’s son. He’s mine. Always has been. Silas made up the entire story so he could take control of a child who never belonged to him.”
Still silence.
“Vanessa… ask yourself. If Silas was so certain Marcus was the father… why did he need to falsify results? Why threaten Elena? Why chase us across the country? Because he knew. He knew the truth. And he was terrified it would come out.”
Her voice trembled when she finally spoke.
“Even if what you say is true… Silas has Caleb. He won’t give him back. Not ever. He believes that boy is the only thing standing between him and his legacy.”
“His legacy is built on fraud,” I said. “And I am going to expose it. Every lie. Every crime. Every corrupt deal he has ever made. I will burn his empire to the ground to get my son back.”
“Adrian, please…” Vanessa sounded desperate. “You don’t understand what he’s capable of. If you threaten him… he could hurt Caleb. He could hurt all of us.”
“Then help me,” I said. “Tell me where he is keeping him. Help me get my son back safely. And when this is over… I will make sure you and Marcus are protected. You are victims too. Silas manipulated you both.”
Vanessa hesitated. I could hear her breathing. The struggle in her silence.
“He took him to the island,” she whispered. “Silas’s private estate. Off the coast. There is no way in except by boat or helicopter. He has guards everywhere. No one can get close.”
“Tell me the name of the island.”
“Blackrock Island.” She paused. “Adrian… be careful. He told me if anyone comes for the boy… he will not hesitate to do whatever it takes to keep him.”
“Tell Silas I am coming,” I said. “And tell him this: He has exactly forty-eight hours to return my son to me safely. If he does… I will consider his actions. If he does not… I will release every document I have to every newspaper, every prosecutor, every court in the country. I will destroy everything he has built.”
I hung up before she could reply.
Martin looked at me.
“Blackrock Island,” he said. “Impenetrable. Heavily guarded. But not impossible.”
“He has forty-eight hours,” I said. “If he loves his legacy more than he fears the truth… he will not give Caleb back. And then we go to war.”
Forty-eight hours passed.
Silas did not call.
Caleb did not come home.
On the second night, my phone rang.
It was Silas.
His voice was cold, arrogant, unshaken.
“You think pieces of paper frighten me?” he said. “I own judges. I own newspapers. I own the very laws you think protect you. You can show your documents to whoever you like. No one will believe you. And when I am done… you will be the one accused of fraud. You will be the one in prison. And Caleb will remain here. Where he belongs.”
“He is my son,” I said quietly. “And you are a kidnapper and a fraudster.”
“He is a Hale,” Silas corrected. “And you are nothing but a temporary inconvenience. If you want him… come and take him. But be warned. The island is prepared for you. And I will not be merciful.”
The line went dead.
I looked at Martin.
“He’s not going to give him back.”
Martin nodded grimly.
“Then we don’t ask permission. We go get him.”
I picked up Elena’s letter and read it once more. Fight for him. Expose Silas.
May you like
Silas had chosen war.
And I would give him exactly what he asked for.
