Chapter 16 - THE FINAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLE

I ran outside.
The car was already gone. Taillights vanishing down the road. Dust swirling in its wake.
Elena and Martin stood in the doorway behind me.
“She took him,” Martin said, breathless. “Marcus. And she left this.”
He held out a folded piece of paper. I snatched it and read it under the porch light.
*Silas may be finished. But the Hales are not. Meet me at the old lighthouse at midnight. Come alone. Bring the journal. Or Marcus dies. And then… I come for the boy.*
I crumpled the note in my hand.
“She’s not doing this for Silas,” Elena said quietly. “She’s doing it for Marcus. She knows Silas will never get out of prison. She knows Marcus will go down too. Unless she can prove Marcus was manipulated. Unless she can trade something valuable.”
“She wants the journal,” I said. “The only thing that proves Marcus was innocent. The only thing that can save him.”
Elena nodded.
“She will trade Marcus’s life for Silas’s reputation. She will burn the journal. Destroy the only proof we have. And then she will disappear. And Silas will walk free.”
I looked at the note again.
*Come alone.*
“Adrian, no,” Elena said. “It’s a trap. She knows you will come. She expects you to come.”
“If I don’t… she kills him. And then she comes back here. For Caleb. For you. For everything.”
I handed the journal to Martin.
“Keep this safe. Guard it with your life. If I don’t come back by dawn… take Elena and Caleb to the safe house. And do not come out until I call you myself.”
“Adrian—”
“Promise me.”
Martin hesitated. Then he nodded.
“I promise.”
I turned to Elena. I took her hands in mine.
“I will be back. I promise. And then… we will never be apart again.”
She kissed me. Hard. Desperate. Like she was afraid it might be the last time.
“Be careful,” she whispered. “She is not the woman you think she is. She has been lying her whole life. Just like Silas taught her.”
I got into my car and drove toward the coast. Toward the lighthouse. Toward midnight.
I thought about everything. The broken vase. The lie. The fake DNA test. The kidnapping. Silas’s arrest. Elena’s return. And now… Vanessa.
I had always thought Vanessa was following Silas’s orders. But as I drove, I began to see the truth.
Vanessa wasn’t following Silas.
She had been using him. All this time.
She had known Elena was alive. She had known the truth. She had played every side. She had charmed me. She had manipulated Silas. She had protected Marcus. And she had waited. For the moment when everything fell apart… so she could take everything for herself.
I arrived at the lighthouse just before midnight.
It stood alone at the edge of the rocks, battered by wind and waves. The beam swept slowly across the dark water, cutting through the mist.
I got out of the car.
“VANESSA!” I called into the darkness. “I’m here!”
She stepped out from behind the stone wall. She held a gun. And beside her, bound and gagged, stood Marcus. His eyes were wide and terrified.
Vanessa looked at me. Her face was cold. No tears. No fear. Just determination.
“Where is it?” she said.
“I don’t have it,” I said. “Martin has it. And if anything happens to me… he releases everything. Silas’s secrets. Your secrets. Everything.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re bluffing.”
“Am I?” I took a step closer. “You knew Elena was alive. All this time. You knew she was hiding. You knew the DNA test was fake. And you said nothing. Because it served your purpose.”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“You helped Silas,” I continued. “You helped him lie. You helped him steal. Not because you believed him. But because you wanted the power. You wanted the money. And you wanted Marcus to be the heir.”
Vanessa raised the gun.
“Silas is finished,” she said. “But Marcus is still a Hale. And with the journal gone… there is no proof of anything. No proof of fraud. No proof of kidnapping. No proof of lies. We can start over. We can build something better.”
“By stealing what belongs to us?” I said. “By threatening to kill an innocent boy?”
“Silas made me this way!” she shouted. “He taught me that power is the only thing that matters! That truth is whatever you say it is!”
“And you believed him?” I said. “Look at where it got him. Look at where it got you.”
Vanessa’s hand trembled. The gun wavered.
“I have to do this,” she whispered. “I have to save him.”
She raised the gun higher.
“Tell Martin to bring the journal. Or Marcus dies right here.”
I took a step forward.
“Then shoot me. Because I will never give you what you want. And I will never let you hurt my family.”
Vanessa’s finger tightened on the trigger.
Marcus struggled against his bonds. He screamed something behind the gag.
And then… from the darkness behind us… a voice spoke.
“Put the gun down, Vanessa.”
Vanessa froze.

She turned slowly.
Standing at the edge of the light… was Elena.
