Thinking

Chapter 7: What Happened After the Camera Went Dark

Officer Brooks arrived at our house eleven minutes after Vanessa's video call ended.

By then, I had replayed the final seconds of the recording so many times that her frightened face had begun appearing whenever I closed my eyes.

If the police find the second file before I do, they'll think you were part of it.

Danielle sat at the kitchen table with both hands wrapped around a glass of water. She hadn't taken a sip.

Officer Brooks placed the tablet inside an evidence bag.

"Did either of you touch anything else after the call ended?""

"No," I answered.

"Did Vanessa contact you again?""

"Not yet.""

Officer Brooks nodded to the detective standing behind her.

"Preserve the incoming message and the call records. We'll request the original account information from the service provider.""

I leaned forward.

"She said Eric did something to Lily's phone. What could he have done?""

"We won't know until the device has been examined.""

"But she said the police would think I was involved.""

Officer Brooks studied me.

"Mr. Reed, did you authorize any of the financial transactions we've discussed?""

"I authorized the initial transfers for the consulting business. I did not authorize the insurance policy, the forged medical forms, or the messages to Lily.""

"Did you know the business was being used to move money?""

"No.""

"Did you know Vanessa or Eric had access to your daughter's phone?""

"No.""

Officer Brooks wrote down my answers.

"Then we need to establish what happened through evidence. Don't assume Vanessa is telling the truth simply because she's frightened.""

I glanced toward Danielle.

She had been staring at the table.

"She might be lying," Danielle said quietly.

"But she knows something.""

Officer Brooks nodded.

"That's why we'll continue investigating.""

After the officers left, I went into Lily's bedroom.

I hadn't been able to enter it alone since the funeral.

Her pink blanket was folded at the foot of the bed. A row of stuffed animals sat along the windowsill, arranged by size. A sheet of gold star stickers lay beside her schoolbooks.

On her desk was a handwritten list titled Things I Want to Do With Daddy.

The first item was make pancakes without Mommy helping.

The second was go to the aquarium.

The third was teach Daddy how to draw a unicorn.

At the bottom, she'd added a smaller sentence.

Daddy has to put his phone away.

I sat on the edge of her bed.

I could hear her voice so clearly.

"Daddy, you're not listening.""

And my answer.

"One minute, sweetheart.""

There had always been one more email, one more meeting, one more reason to postpone the moment when she needed me.

Now there would never be another moment.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Officer Brooks.

We have located a potential witness connected to Eric Cole. Please remain available.

I stood and went downstairs.

Danielle was waiting beside the kitchen counter.

"What did you find?"" she asked.

"Nothing. Just her list.""

She closed her eyes.

"I used to promise her we'd do those things on the weekends.""

I looked at her.

"Did you?""

"Sometimes.""

She swallowed.

"Sometimes I was tired. Sometimes I had work. Sometimes I told her to ask you.""

Her eyes filled.

"And you were always busy.""

I wanted to tell her that she had been a wonderful mother, that she had done everything she could, that none of this was her fault.

But I knew she would hear those words as another attempt to escape responsibility.

So I said the only thing I could honestly say.

"I'm sorry.""

Danielle looked at me.

"I don't need you to be sorry. I need you to understand that we can't bring her back, no matter what the police discover.""

"I understand.""

"No, Marcus. You need to live with that understanding. Every day.""

She walked past me toward the stairs.

I remained in the kitchen until Officer Brooks called again.

"We've located a former employee of Eric's," she said.

"Her name is Tessa Ward. She worked with him on several security installations, including the system at your house.""

"Does she know what happened to Lily?""

"She says she has information about the devices Eric installed. We're bringing her in for an interview.""

"Can I speak with her?""

"Not yet. We need to establish what she knows first.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

For the next two hours, I paced the living room.

At 6:42 p.m., Officer Brooks called again.

This time, her voice was different.

"We've recovered a deleted audio file from Lily's tablet.""

I stopped moving.

"What does it contain?""

"A conversation recorded in your home office. The date is October 1.""

I remembered the hidden cavity behind the bookshelf.

The memory card.

The photograph of Eric crouching in front of Lily.

"Is it the conversation Vanessa was talking about?""

"We believe it may be related. The recording is incomplete, but there's a portion I want you to hear.""

A few minutes later, Officer Brooks sent me a secured link.

I sat at the kitchen table and put on my headphones.

The audio began with the sound of footsteps.

Then Eric spoke.

"She took the file.""

Vanessa answered.

"How much did she see?""

"Enough to know what it is.""

"Did she tell Marcus?""

"Not yet.""

A chair scraped against the floor.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Then we have to get it back before she does.""

Eric said something I couldn't make out.

Then Vanessa answered.

"No. We can't scare her again. She's already asking questions.""

My heart pounded.

Eric laughed without humor.

"You're the one who told her to keep quiet.""

"Because you said the phone would be enough.""

"The phone was enough until she started taking pictures.""

A long silence followed.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

"What about the hospital?""

I stopped breathing.

Eric answered.

"We'll deal with that when we know what she has.""

The recording ended.

I removed the headphones.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

They had known Lily was frightened.

They had known she was collecting evidence.

And they had discussed her hospital visit before she'd even arrived there.

I called Officer Brooks.

"Did they know Lily was going to the hospital?""

"We're investigating the timeline. The recording doesn't establish that either person knew in advance that she would become ill.""

"But they talked about the hospital.""

"Yes. That is one reason we're treating the recording as significant.""

"What did Tessa Ward tell you?""

Officer Brooks paused.

"She says Eric installed remote-access software on several devices during the security work at your house. She also says he discussed using a client's personal information to create false messages.""

My stomach tightened.

"Can she prove it?""

"She's provided records that we're examining.""

"Did she mention Lily?""

"She says Eric was worried about a recording Lily had made. According to Tessa, he believed it contained evidence of financial fraud.""

I pressed my palms against the table.

"Then Vanessa's telling the truth about the second file.""

"Possibly. We haven't recovered it yet.""

I stared at the blank computer screen.

"Officer Brooks, what happened after Eric left the hospital corridor?""

"We've reviewed the available footage. He returned to the lobby and exited through the east doors.""

"Was Vanessa with him?""

"No. She remained in the corridor briefly before leaving the building.""

"And Lily's phone?""

"We're trying to establish who handled it after that.""

I swallowed.

"Can you tell whether the phone was used to send messages after she was admitted?""

"Some of the activity is still being analyzed.""

The call ended.

I sat in silence until I heard Danielle's footsteps.

She had changed into pajamas and was holding a small envelope.

"I found this in Lily's schoolbag," she said.

I looked up.

"What is it?""

She placed it on the table.

"Her teacher gave me the bag after the funeral. I couldn't bring myself to look through everything.""

Inside were several worksheets, a broken pencil, a drawing of a cat, and a folded note.

The note was addressed to me.

I opened it.

Daddy, I know you have a secret.

My vision blurred.

Beneath the sentence, Lily had drawn two people holding hands.

One wore a blue shirt.

The other wore a yellow dress.

Between them was a small red heart.

I won't tell Mommy if you come home.

Danielle sat opposite me.

"I don't know when she wrote that.""

I pressed the paper against my chest.

"I should have come home.""

"Yes.""

She didn't soften the answer.

Then she reached into the envelope again.

There was another sheet of paper.

This one contained a list of numbers and a short web address written in Lily's careful handwriting.

Danielle frowned.

"Do you recognize these?""

I looked at the numbers.

They resembled a series of dates and account digits.

Then I noticed the last four numbers.

They matched the final digits of the consulting company's account.

My stomach tightened.

"This could be connected to the business.""

Danielle stared at the page.

"She was eight years old.""

"I know.""

"She was solving something that grown adults were hiding from her.""

I couldn't speak.

My phone rang again.

Officer Brooks.

"Mr. Reed, we have new information from Tessa Ward. She believes the second file may have been uploaded to a cloud account that Eric created.""

"Can you access it?""

"We're working on that. But Tessa also provided a name associated with the account.""

"Whose name?""

There was a pause.

"Your daughter.""

I stared at Danielle.

"What?""

"According to Tessa, Eric created the account using Lily's email address. He may have used it to store recordings and copies of the documents.""

I looked at the note in my hand.

The web address.

The numbers.

The account details.

Lily hadn't merely found the file.

She might have been trying to tell us where it was.

"Can you recover it?"" I asked.

"We're attempting to. But there's another complication.""

"What?""

"The account received a login from an unknown device approximately forty minutes ago.""

My blood ran cold.

"Someone is trying to erase it.""

"That's our concern.""

I looked at Danielle.

She had gone pale.

"Can you stop them?""

"We've contacted the service provider. I can't promise what will be recoverable.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Please find it.""

"We're doing everything we can.""

After the call ended, I studied the web address Lily had written.

Then I noticed a tiny message beneath it.

If this disappears, look where Daddy keeps his promises.

I read the words aloud.

Danielle stared at me.

"Where would that be?""

I thought of the fireproof safe.

The desk drawer.

The papers.

Then I remembered a small wooden box in the back of my closet.

It contained every letter Lily had ever written to me, every birthday card, and the Father's Day card she'd made when she was five.

I'd kept it because I couldn't bear to throw anything away.

I had never opened it in front of her.

I had never told her it existed.

And yet, somehow, she knew.

I stood.

"Upstairs.""

Danielle followed me to the bedroom.

I pulled the box from the closet and placed it on the bed.

Beneath the letters was a small plastic envelope I had never seen before.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Daddy, this is the real one.

I plugged the drive into an unused laptop, leaving the original files untouched.

The folder contained a single video.

The timestamp was October 2, 7:14 p.m.

I clicked play.

Lily appeared on the screen, sitting at her desk in her pink pajamas.

Her eyes were red.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Daddy, if you're watching this, I need you to listen.""

I covered my mouth.

Lily swallowed.

"I know you're not home because of the lady. She said you don't love Mommy anymore.""

She paused.

"But I don't think that's true. I think she wants you to believe that so you'll leave us.""

Danielle began to cry.

Lily looked down at something in her lap.

"I found the papers. I took pictures. I know they're going to be mad at me.""

She leaned closer to the camera.

"Daddy, there's something else.""

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Uncle Eric said he can make people believe anything if he has their phone.""

I felt a chill move through me.

Lily continued.

"He said he could make it look like you sent messages you didn't send.""

She wiped her nose with her sleeve.

"I think that's what he did to me.""

The screen flickered.

Then Lily spoke the words that made my heart stop.

"And Daddy, I think he did it to somebody else before.""

The video ended.

For several seconds, neither Danielle nor I moved.

Then a new notification appeared on the laptop.

An email from the cloud account.

The subject line read:

*AUTOMATIC BACKUP COMPLETE.*

I opened it.

There was one attachment.

A document titled Previous Case — Cole Security.

And beneath the title was a name I recognized.

My former business partner.

The man who had died in a car accident eighteen months earlier.

The man whose death had left me with a company, a fortune, and questions I'd never bothered to ask.

Lily had been trying to tell me that Vanessa and Eric's scheme had started long before they entered our home.

And the first person they had destroyed might have been someone I once called my brother.
