Chapter 6: What Lily Found Behind the Wall
I stared at the words until they stopped looking like letters.
LILY KNEW.
Someone had carved them into the wood beneath my safe with a sharp object.
The marks were uneven, hurried, and deep enough to expose the pale grain beneath the dark finish.
Danielle stood behind me.
"Who wrote that?""
"I don't know.""
"Did Vanessa have access to the safe?""
"No.""
"Did Eric?""
I swallowed.
"He installed the alarm system. He was in this room several times.""
Danielle looked around the office.
"Then he knew where it was.""
I crouched in front of the safe.
The lock remained intact, but the small key compartment beside the desk had been forced open. The spare key was missing.
I called Officer Brooks.
She arrived with another investigator less than forty minutes later.
They photographed the desk, examined the damaged compartment, and asked us to wait downstairs while they documented the room.
When Officer Brooks finally joined us in the living room, she carried a clear evidence bag.
Inside was a small metal key.
"Was this in your desk?"" she asked.
"Yes. It belongs to the safe.""
"We recovered it from the pocket of a jacket found in Eric Cole's vehicle.""
Danielle gripped the armrest.
"Does that mean he opened the safe?""
"We don't know yet. We'll need to examine its contents and compare them with the available records.""
I stood.
"Then let's open it.""
Officer Brooks nodded.
We returned upstairs.
The investigator photographed the safe before I entered the combination.
The lock clicked.
Inside were several folders, a passport, an old watch that had belonged to my father, and a small envelope marked Property Records.
At first, everything appeared undisturbed.
Then I noticed the empty space beneath the folders.
A thin rectangular outline marked the dust.
Something had been removed.
I took out the remaining papers.
A folder containing our mortgage documents.
Copies of our tax returns.
The deed to the house.
And a small black notebook.
I didn't recognize it.
The cover was plain, without a label.
Officer Brooks asked me to leave it where it was while the investigator photographed it.
Afterward, she put on gloves and opened it.
The first page contained a list of dates and numbers.
The second contained several names.
Vanessa Cole.
Eric Cole.
Marcus Reed.
Danielle Reed.
And Lily Reed.
My stomach tightened.
"What is that?""
Officer Brooks turned another page.
There were entries describing payments, phone numbers, and account details. Some entries had dates matching the messages sent to Lily.
Others corresponded to the transfers Rachel had shown us.
But the final page contained a sentence written in block letters.
If Lily talks, everything collapses.
Danielle covered her mouth.
I felt a cold weight settle in my chest.
Officer Brooks photographed the page.
"Mr. Reed, did you write any of this?""
"No.""
"Have you ever seen this notebook?""
"Never.""
She closed it carefully.
"We'll need to establish who created it and why it was kept here.""
Danielle looked at me.
"Why would someone hide evidence in our house?""
I had no answer.
But as the investigator continued examining the safe, I noticed a small white envelope wedged between the back panel and the metal wall.
It was so thin that it almost blended into the shadows.
"There's something else," I said.
Officer Brooks directed the investigator's attention toward it.
The envelope was removed and photographed.
Inside was a folded sheet of paper.
Lily's handwriting covered the front.
Daddy, please believe me.
My knees weakened.
Danielle reached for my arm, then caught herself and stepped away.
Officer Brooks unfolded the paper.
It contained a drawing of our house.
The front door.
The living room window.
The staircase.
And a small square beside the bookshelf in my office.
Beneath the drawing, Lily had written:
The lady said the money was for helping Daddy start over. But Uncle Eric said it was for something else.
I stared at the words.
There was more.
I heard them say Mommy would have to leave the house.
Danielle made a small, wounded sound.
Then she read the final sentence.
I think Daddy signed something bad.
I closed my eyes.
My daughter had discovered the financial scheme before I had.
She had tried to warn me.
And instead of listening, I had spent my time lying to her mother and planning a future that depended on keeping the truth hidden.
Officer Brooks folded the letter back into its evidence sleeve.
"We'll examine this alongside the other material.""
"Can you tell us what the money was for?"" Danielle asked.
"We have several working theories, but I can't confirm them yet.""
I looked at the notebook.
"Could it be connected to the insurance policy?""
"Possibly.""
"What about the second file Vanessa mentioned?""
Officer Brooks's expression sharpened.
"You know about the note?""
"Yes. She left a message saying Lily had found the second file.""
The investigator looked up from the safe.
"There's no second file in here.""
Danielle's face tightened.
"Then where is it?""
Officer Brooks shook her head.
"We're still trying to locate it.""
I looked at the drawing again.
The small square beside the bookshelf had been colored black.
Something about it seemed deliberate.
"Lily was pointing to this part of the room," I said.
Officer Brooks examined the drawing.
"Have you checked behind the bookshelf?""
"Not yet.""
We moved the shelf carefully.
At first, there was nothing except a layer of dust and a few forgotten books.
Then the investigator noticed a narrow seam in the wall.
A panel had been fitted behind the lowest shelf.
It was almost invisible unless you knew where to look.
Officer Brooks ordered everyone to stop while the panel was photographed.
A few minutes later, the investigator opened it.
Behind the wall was a small cavity containing a plastic case.
Inside were two flash drives, a folded sheet of paper, and a photograph of Lily standing beside Eric.
The photograph appeared to have been taken in our backyard.
Eric was crouching in front of her, holding something small in his hand.
Lily was looking directly at the camera.
Her expression was solemn.
On the back, someone had written:
October 1. She saw everything.
Danielle pressed her hand against her chest.
"Why was my daughter being watched?""
Officer Brooks did not answer.
She examined the folded paper.
It contained a series of instructions.
The first referred to transferring money from the consulting company.
The second referred to the insurance policy.
The third contained a sentence that made the investigator stop reading aloud.
If the child becomes a witness, use the existing account to discredit the father.
I stared at her.
"Discredit me?""
She continued.
Establish that Marcus was unstable, financially reckless, and estranged from his family. Ensure that any accusations appear to be part of a domestic dispute.
The room fell silent.
Danielle looked at me.
"They were planning to make you look responsible.""
I couldn't speak.
If Lily had died and the messages from my account had been accepted as genuine, the story would have been simple.
A father who rejected his daughter.
A secret affair.
A failed marriage.
A grieving mother who accused her husband of neglect.
And a financial scheme hidden beneath the chaos.
My own behavior would have made the story believable.
Officer Brooks placed the paper in an evidence sleeve.
"We need to examine both drives. The contents may establish the scope of the plan.""
"Can we see them?"" I asked.
"Not until the forensic team has made verified copies.""
I nodded.
Then I noticed something else inside the cavity.
A small folded card.
I recognized it immediately.
It was the Father's Day card Lily had made for me.
The one I'd kept on my desk for months before moving it into a drawer.
On the front, she had drawn a superhero wearing a blue cape.
Inside, beneath the words My daddy is my favorite superhero, she'd added a new sentence in purple crayon.
Even superheroes have to listen.
I broke.
I sat down on the floor and covered my face.
Danielle knelt beside the doorway, crying silently.
For the first time since Lily died, she reached toward me.
Her hand rested on my shoulder for only a second.
Then she withdrew it.
"I wish you had listened," she whispered.
I nodded, unable to speak.
Officer Brooks gave us a few minutes before asking additional questions.
When the investigators finished documenting the room, she explained that the evidence would be taken for analysis.
"We've also located Eric Cole," she said.
"He's been detained for questioning in connection with the financial investigation.""
"Has he admitted anything?""
"Not at this stage.""
"What about Vanessa?""
"We're still trying to locate her.""
I looked toward the window.
"She knows about the evidence.""
"That's possible. We don't want to speculate about her movements until we have verified information.""
After the officers left, Danielle walked downstairs.
I followed her into the kitchen.
She stood at the counter, holding Lily's pink water bottle.
"She was so afraid," she said.
I leaned against the doorway.
"I know.""
Danielle shook her head.
"No. You know the facts. You know what she wrote. You know what the messages said.""
She looked at me.
"But you don't know how she looked when she asked me whether you still loved her.""
I lowered my eyes.
"You're right.""
"She wasn't angry with you, Marcus. She was trying to understand why you had stopped coming back.""
My throat tightened.
"I should have been there.""
"Yes.""
The word was quiet.
Absolute.
Danielle placed the bottle on the counter.
"I don't know if I'll ever forgive you.""
I nodded.
"I'm not asking you to.""
"Good. Because I can't promise anything.""
She walked toward the stairs.
Halfway up, she stopped.
"Marcus?""
I looked at her.
"If Vanessa really did this, I want her to explain it to Lily's grave.""
I swallowed.
"She will have to answer for what she did.""
Danielle turned away.
I remained in the kitchen long after she disappeared upstairs.
At 8:17 p.m., Officer Brooks called.
"The forensic team has examined the first flash drive.""
I stood.
"What did they find?""
"Several financial records, along with exported messages and audio files. Some of the material appears to have been created before Lily died.""
"Does it prove Vanessa sent the messages?""
"We're still authenticating the records. But there's one recording I want you to know about.""
"What recording?""
Officer Brooks hesitated.
"It's a conversation between Vanessa and Eric. The date is October 2, the day after Lily photographed them in your office.""
My heart pounded.
"Can you tell me what they said?""
"I can tell you the recording contains a reference to your daughter and a plan to recover something she had taken.""
"What had she taken?""
"That's what we don't yet know.""
I gripped the counter.
"Was Lily in danger?""
There was a pause.
Then Officer Brooks said, "Mr. Reed, the recording suggests that Vanessa believed your daughter had discovered evidence of the financial scheme.""
My chest tightened.
"And Eric?""
"He said something that concerns us.""
"What?""
Officer Brooks took a breath.
"He said, 'If she tells her father, we lose everything.''"
I closed my eyes.
Then I heard a sound from upstairs.
Danielle screamed.
I ran toward the staircase.
She stood in the hallway outside Lily's bedroom, holding a small tablet.
The screen displayed an incoming video call.
The caller's name was hidden.
But beneath it was a message.
I know what happened to Lily.
Danielle looked at me, her face drained of color.
The call was still ringing.
I took the tablet from her.
"Don't answer it," I said.
But before I could disconnect it, the call connected by itself.
A woman's face appeared on the screen.
Vanessa.
Her eyes were red, and her hair was tangled around her shoulders.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Marcus," she whispered.
"You need to listen to me.""
I gripped the tablet.
"Where are you?""
"That doesn't matter.""
"You sent those messages to my daughter.""
Vanessa began to cry.
"I know.""
"You frightened her.""
"I know.""
"You went to the hospital.""
She closed her eyes.
"I know.""
I felt rage rise in my chest.
"Then tell me why.""
Vanessa looked toward something beyond the camera.
When she spoke again, her voice was barely audible.
"Because Lily wasn't supposed to be the one who found the file.""
I froze.
"What file?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"The second file. The one Eric thought he'd destroyed.""
Danielle stepped closer.
"What was in it?""
Vanessa looked at my wife.
For the first time, her expression changed from fear to something that resembled shame.
"Everything.""
"Everything about what?"" I demanded.
Vanessa leaned closer to the camera.
"The insurance policy. The money. The messages. And the reason Eric wanted Lily's phone.""
My heart pounded.
"Tell us.""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"Because the messages weren't the only thing he put on her phone.""
A noise sounded behind her.
She turned sharply.
"Someone's here.""
"Vanessa, wait!""
She looked back at me, terrified.
"Marcus, if the police find the second file before I do, they'll think you were part of it.""
The screen went black.
For several seconds, neither Danielle nor I moved.
Then a notification appeared on the tablet.
A new message.
It contained a photograph of a hospital corridor.
Lily's hospital corridor.
And in the corner of the image, standing outside her room at 3:34 p.m. on Friday, was Eric Cole.

Beneath the photograph were six words.
Ask him what he did next.
