Chapter 7: The Ally Who Wasn’t There

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The name on Daniel’s phone remained on the screen.

A name I had trusted.

A name I had defended.

A name I never imagined would appear in a conversation about betrayal.

Daniel looked at me carefully.

“Are you sure?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know what he was asking.

Was I sure that I recognized the name?

Yes.

Was I sure that person had betrayed me?

No.

And somehow, that uncertainty hurt more.

Because anger is easier than disappointment.

Anger gives you somewhere to stand.

Disappointment leaves you standing in the ruins.

Rodrigo stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

I looked at him.

For once, I saw something different in his eyes.

Not jealousy.

Not arrogance.

Concern.

I turned the phone around.

His face changed.

“Marcus?””

The room went silent.

My driver.

My security coordinator.

The man who had opened the car door for me the night Rodrigo hit me.

The man who had never asked unnecessary questions.

The man who had always appeared whenever I needed help.

“No,” I whispered.

Daniel watched me.

“The withdrawal request came from an account connected to his credentials.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It doesn’t,” Daniel agreed.

“Then why are you looking at me like you believe it?””

He paused.

“Because someone used his authorization.””

The sentence was different.

But it hurt just as much.

Someone used his authorization.

Meaning someone had access.

Meaning someone close to me had been planning this.

I looked toward the window.

The city stretched below us.

Thousands of people.

Millions of lives.

And somehow, the most dangerous person in my world had been someone I let inside it.

“Find him.””

Daniel nodded.

“I already started.””

Marcus didn’t answer his phone.

Not once.

Not after ten calls.

Not after Daniel sent a formal request.

Not after I sent one simple message.

*Marcus. We need to talk.*

Nothing.

The silence became heavier with every minute.

By evening, we were back at my apartment.

Rodrigo was still there.

That surprised me.

A few days ago, I never would have imagined letting him stand inside my home.

But things had changed.

The enemy I understood was less frightening than the mystery I didn’t.

Rodrigo sat across from me at the kitchen table.

No expensive suit.

No family audience.

No performance.

Just a tired man staring at his hands.

“I should have known.””

I looked at him.

“Known what?””

“That something was wrong.””

I didn’t respond.

Because he had spent years ignoring everything.

Now suddenly, he wanted to notice.

“I saw signs.””

I almost smiled.

“You ignored signs.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

He looked down.

“I thought you were just…”

He stopped.

“Just what?””

He swallowed.

“Controlling.””

The word hung between us.

I stared at him.

“Controlling?””

He rubbed his face.

“I know how that sounds.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“I want you to finish.””

He looked at me.

“I thought you kept everything separate because you didn’t trust me.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You thought I didn’t trust you?””

He didn’t answer.

I leaned back.

“Rodrigo, you never asked.””

“I know.””

“You never wanted to know.””

“I know.””

“You enjoyed the benefits of my success while pretending it had nothing to do with me.””

His eyes closed.

“I know.””

For once, he wasn’t fighting.

And that almost made it worse.

Because apologies from someone who finally understands can be painful.

“You know what hurts the most?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“Not that you thought I was weak.””

A pause.

“Not that your mother thought I was disposable.””

I looked directly at him.

“It’s that I spent years proving I loved you, and you spent years proving you didn’t believe I deserved love back.””

His expression broke.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

“I know.””

The words surprised him.

“You believe me?””

“I believe you regret it.””

A pause.

“But regret isn’t the same as change.””

He nodded slowly.

Because he knew.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

Then stand.

“Where?””

A pause.

“I’ll be there.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“They found Marcus.””

Marcus was waiting at a private security office in Santa Monica.

When I walked in, I almost didn’t recognize him.

The man who always looked calm and professional was sitting with his shoulders lowered.

Defeated.

He stood immediately.

“Mrs. Vale.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

That was all I asked.

Not what happened.

Not how.

Why.

His face tightened.

“I didn’t do what you think.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at Daniel.

Then at Rodrigo.

Then back at me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stared.

“By trying to empty my account?””

His eyes widened.

“No.””

Daniel placed the evidence on the table.

“The withdrawal request came through your security credentials.””

Marcus looked at it.

Then his face changed.

“I know.””

The room froze.

“You know?””

He nodded.

“Because I saw it happen.””

I stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Marcus took a breath.

“Someone cloned my access.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

I didn’t believe him.

Not because I thought he was lying.

Because I was tired of secrets.

“Marcus.””

His eyes dropped.

“There’s something I should have told you.””

Of course.

Another secret.

Another thing someone decided I didn’t need to know.

“What?””

He reached into his jacket.

And removed an old envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“This was given to me six years ago.””

I frowned.

“By who?””

He looked at me.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

Again.

I was starting to hate silence.

“What?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your father hired me before he died.””

I stared at him.

“You weren’t my driver.””

His expression changed.

“No.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then what were you?””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

“Your protection.””

Rodrigo stepped back.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus ignored him.

“Your father knew someone would come after the assets he hid.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“You were assigned as her security?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell her?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because your father specifically told me not to.””

I felt anger rise.

“My father?””

“He said if you knew, you would search for answers before you were ready.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I’m ready for.””

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

My entire life, people had hidden things from me.

For my protection.

For my benefit.

For my own good.

And somehow, every secret had still hurt me.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My father’s handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

I hadn’t seen it in years.

The first line destroyed me.

*My daughter, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you the way I promised.*

I stopped.

My eyes blurred.

I kept reading.

*There are people who will try to convince you that you inherited nothing from me. They are wrong. You inherited everything that matters.*

I swallowed.

Daniel looked away, giving me privacy.

The letter continued.

*Trust carefully. Even those who stand beside you may have reasons they never reveal.*

My heart sank.

Because my father had known.

He had known.

I continued.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

*The person you must never trust is the one who tells you they are protecting you while secretly controlling you.*

I froze.

Because that sentence was not about Marcus.

It wasn’t about my uncle.

It wasn’t about Evelyn.

It was about someone else.

Someone who had been guiding my life from the beginning.

I looked up.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“Who gave my father information about the account?””

His face changed.

And I knew.

He knew the answer.

“Marcus.””

His voice became quiet.

“Your father never trusted your uncle.””

I waited.

“Because your uncle wasn’t working alone.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Who was with him?””

Marcus looked at Rodrigo.

Then at Evelyn.

Then back at me.

And whispered:

“The person who helped destroy your father’s company…”

He swallowed.

“…was someone inside your own family.””

My eyes moved slowly toward Rodrigo.

Because there was only one family member nobody had questioned yet.

And she had been standing beside us the entire time.

Evelyn.

May you like

Then Marcus said the words that shattered everything.

“Your mother-in-law knew your father’s secrets before you ever met her.””
