Chapter 6: The Name Buried in My Past
The room felt smaller after Daniel said those words.
Someone had been moving my money.
Through an account connected to my identity.
An account I didn’t control.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Not Rodrigo.
Not Evelyn.
Not even me.
Because there are moments when your mind refuses to accept what your ears have heard.
This was one of those moments.
I had spent years believing I understood the enemy in front of me.
Rodrigo’s arrogance.
Evelyn’s manipulation.
Their obsession with status.
Their hunger for control.
I had prepared myself to fight them.
But this was different.
This was someone who had been watching from the shadows.
Someone who knew enough about me to use my name.
Daniel opened the file again.
“I wanted to confirm everything before I showed you.””
My eyes stayed on the documents.
“How long?””
He hesitated.
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
Rodrigo stepped forward.
“Trying to determine?””
His voice was filled with panic.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at him.
“It means someone created a financial trail designed to look legitimate.””
Rodrigo stared.
“And you’re telling me this now?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“I’m telling her now.””
The emphasis was intentional.
Because for the first time, everyone in the room understood something.
This wasn’t about Rodrigo.
It wasn’t about Evelyn.
It was about me.
My identity.
My money.
My life.
I picked up the document.
The account number meant nothing.
The dates did.
The earliest transaction was eight years ago.
One year before I married Rodrigo.
I felt my fingers go cold.
“Eight years?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn’t have this kind of money eight years ago.””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That worried me.
“What?””
He pulled out another folder.
“I need to show you something.””
He opened it.
Inside were old corporate records.
Documents I hadn’t seen in years.
My breath caught.
Because the company name on the first page belonged to someone else.
Not me.
Not my holding company.
Not anything connected to Rodrigo.
It belonged to my father.
I stopped breathing for a second.
My father.
A man who had been gone for almost ten years.
A man whose businesses had collapsed after his death.
A man everyone said left behind nothing but debt.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why is my father’s name here?””
Daniel sat down.
“Because that’s the part I couldn’t explain.””
Rodrigo looked confused.
“Her father?””
Evelyn suddenly became very quiet.
I noticed.
And that bothered me.
“Evelyn,” I said.
She looked at me.
“What?””
“You know something.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I don’t.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
The room went still.
Because nobody was used to me speaking to her that way.
Not Rodrigo.
Not Evelyn.
Not even myself.
For years, I had softened every sentence around her.
Not anymore.
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Mrs. Vale, we have records showing your involvement.””
Her face changed.
“What records?””
“Bank communications.””
Silence.
Then Evelyn looked at me.
“You hired him to investigate me?””
I stared at her.
“No.””
My voice lowered.
“I hired him because I thought you stole from me.””
A pause.
“But now I think you were hiding something else.””
For the first time, Evelyn looked afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
That told me more than words ever could.
An hour later, we were sitting in the same office where Evelyn had searched through my drawers.
The irony was almost too perfect.
She sat across from me.
No performance.
No expensive smile.
No carefully chosen words.
Just a woman who had finally run out of places to hide.
Daniel placed a copy of the bank records between us.
“Eight years ago, several accounts connected to your late father’s business were closed.””
I looked down.
“I know.””
“Not all of them.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“One account remained active.””
My heart tightened.
“An account under my name?””
Daniel nodded.
“But controlled by someone else.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She looked away.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
I stood.
“Who?””
My voice echoed through the room.
Evelyn finally spoke.
“Your father.””
I froze.
The world seemed to stop.
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
She looked down at her hands.
For the first time, she looked less like a villain.
And more like someone carrying a secret too heavy to hold.
“Your father didn’t lose everything.””
I stared.
“What are you saying?””
“He wanted people to believe he did.””
The words made no sense.
My father had spent the final years of his life fighting lawsuits.
Selling properties.
Trying to save what remained.
Or at least, that was what I believed.
“You knew?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me more than the confession.
“How?””
She took a breath.
“Because I was involved.””
Rodrigo stepped back.
“What?””
His mother ignored him.
“Your father came to me before he died.””
I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
“Why would he come to you?””
“Because he trusted me.””
I almost laughed.
My father.
Trusting Evelyn.
The woman who had spent years pretending I was beneath her.
“No.””
She looked hurt.
“Your father knew you were vulnerable.””
The sentence angered me.
“Vulnerable?””
“He knew you were young. He knew you were grieving. He knew people would try to take advantage of you.””
I stared at her.
“And he thought you were the person who could protect me?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew how impossible it sounded.
Daniel interrupted.
“Mrs. Vale, please explain the account.””
Evelyn looked at the documents.
“Your father created it before his death.””
“For what?””
“To protect you.””
The room went quiet.
I hated that part of me wanted to believe her.
Because no matter how old you become, there is still a child inside you who wants to hear that your parents protected you.
That they thought about you.
That you mattered.
But then I remembered.
Evelyn had used my money.
She had lied.
She had watched me get hurt.
So I asked the question that mattered.
“Then why did you take money from it?””
Her eyes lowered.
There.
The truth.
Not the whole truth.
But enough.
“Because I needed access.””
“To what?””
“Your father’s investments.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because someone was trying to find them.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
And the fear returned.
“Your uncle.””
I froze.
My uncle.
My father’s younger brother.
The man who had disappeared after my father’s death.
The man everyone said moved overseas.
The man I hadn’t heard from in years.
“No.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Your father discovered he was stealing from the company.””
The room became cold.
“My uncle?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Is this verified?””
He nodded slowly.
“We found several old documents connecting your uncle to the original company accounts.””
My mind raced.
All the pieces.
The hidden account.
The missing money.
The false bankruptcy.
The reason someone wanted my finances buried.
Someone had been protecting a secret.
And now that secret was coming back.
Rodrigo suddenly spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
“If this account existed, why didn’t you tell her?””
He looked at his mother.
“You knew all this time?””
Evelyn said nothing.
That was the answer.
Rodrigo’s face changed.
“You knew she was being targeted?””
Still silence.
“And you let her think she had no family?””
Evelyn looked away.
“Rodrigo.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You always told me she was lucky we accepted her.””
I watched him.
Because for the first time, he was seeing his mother clearly.
“She wasn’t lucky,” he whispered.
“She was the one saving us.””
Evelyn looked at him.
And something broke between them.
Not because he finally defended me.
Because he finally understood he had been lied to too.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“The account.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about it?””
He stood slowly.
“Someone just tried to empty it.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Can you stop it?””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“Not yet.””
A pause.
Then he added:
“Because the person trying to withdraw the money…”
He turned the screen toward me.
I looked at the name.
And my entire body went cold.
It wasn’t my uncle.
It wasn’t Evelyn.
It wasn’t Rodrigo.
It was someone I had trusted more than anyone.
Someone who had been beside me through every difficult moment.
Someone who knew exactly where I kept everything.
Daniel whispered:
“The withdrawal request was authorized by your attorney of record.””
I stared at the name.
May you like
And my heart sank.
Because it belonged to the one person I thought was on my side.
