Chapter 9: The Account That Exposed Everything
Nobody moved after Julian ended the call.
The room felt frozen.
Not because of what he had said.
Because of what he had accidentally revealed.
If they found that account, we're finished.
Those words kept repeating in my mind.
Not worried.
Not confused.
Finished.
That was not how an innocent person reacted.
I watched him carefully.
The man who had spent the last two years convincing everyone he was the smartest person in the room suddenly looked like someone who had just realized he made a mistake.
A big one.
"Julian.""
He looked at me.
"What?""
I tilted my head.
"Who was that?""
"Nobody.""
I almost smiled.
Nobody.
The favorite answer of people who had something to hide.
"Interesting.""
He grabbed his jacket.
"I have to go.""
"No.""
He stopped.
I continued.
"You don't get to walk out now.""
His eyes narrowed.
"Excuse me?""
"For two years, my mother has been afraid to speak in her own house.""
I pointed toward the door.
"You don't get to disappear the second someone asks you questions.""
His expression hardened.
"I don't owe you an explanation.""
"No.""
I looked at him.
"You owe one to her.""
My mother sat quietly on the couch.
She looked exhausted.
But for the first time since I arrived, she wasn't looking at the floor.
She was watching him.
Waiting.
Julian noticed.
And something about that bothered him.
Because he had spent years controlling the conversation.
Now he was losing control.
Khloe stepped forward.
"Julian.""
He looked at her.
"What?""
"Tell us the truth.""
A cold smile appeared on his face.
"You're asking me for the truth?""
Her eyes filled with shame.
"Yes.""
"After everything?""
She swallowed.
"I made mistakes.""
He laughed.
"Mistakes?""
Khloe flinched.
"You think you get to stand there and act innocent?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I'm not innocent.""
That surprised everyone.
Including me.
She continued.
"I should have stopped it.""
Julian looked away.
"But I didn't.""
She looked at my mother.
"And I'm sorry.""
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
But she didn't answer.
Because sorry was not enough.
Not yet.
I turned back to Julian.
"The account.""
His face changed.
"What account?""
"The one you just mentioned.""
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
I looked at Khloe.
"Do you?""
She hesitated.
Then shook her head.
"No.""
I believed her.
Not completely.
But enough.
Julian saw that.
And his expression darkened.
"You're making a mistake trusting her.""
I looked at him.
"Maybe.""
Then I looked at Khloe.
"But unlike you, she admitted what she did.""
That hit him.
Because people who manipulate others hate one thing more than being exposed.
Someone else telling the truth first.
I picked up my phone.
"I need to find out what account you were talking about.""
Julian stepped forward.
"No.""
The word came out too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
My mother looked up.
Khloe stared at him.
I slowly lowered my phone.
"Why not?""
He said nothing.
"Why can't I look?""
"It's private.""
I laughed softly.
"Private?""
I pointed around the room.
"My mother's bank account was used.""
His jaw tightened.
"That's an accusation.""
"Then prove me wrong.""
Silence.
I called Daniel, my attorney.
He answered quickly.
"Natalie?""
"Daniel, I need you to check something.""
"What's going on?""
"I think there is another account connected to the property transfer.""
There was a pause.
"Another account?""
"Yes.""
I looked at Julian.
"A hidden one.""
Daniel became serious.
"Do you have any details?""
"No.""
"Send me everything you have.""
"I will.""
I ended the call.
Julian stared at me.
"You think lawyers solve everything?""
"No.""
I looked at my mother.
"But sometimes they help people who were too scared to fight.""
That sentence made her cry.
Quietly.
But this time, she didn't hide it.
The next morning, my mother and I sat across from Daniel in his office.
The room smelled like coffee and old paper.
My mother held her purse tightly in her lap.
She looked like she was preparing for a storm.
Daniel noticed.
"Mrs. Carter, before we discuss anything, I want you to understand something.""
She looked up.
"What?""
"You are not in trouble.""
Her eyes filled.
"I signed things.""
"Under circumstances where someone may have influenced your decisions.""
She looked down.
"I should have known.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Many people trust the people closest to them.""
I looked at my mother.
She nodded slowly.
Daniel opened a folder.
"We found several documents.""
My stomach tightened.
"About the house?""
"Yes.""
"What did you find?""
He placed a paper on the table.
"The company created for the transfer was registered six months ago.""
"By Julian?""
"Yes.""
I felt my hands tighten.
Daniel continued.
"But that's not the most concerning part.""
"What is?""
"The company had no legitimate business activity.""
My mother frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means it appears to have been created specifically for financial movement.""
I looked at him.
"Moving what?""
He placed another document down.
"Money.""
My heart sank.
"How much?""
Daniel looked serious.
"We are still calculating.""
"Estimate.""
He hesitated.
"Over $200,000.""
My mother covered her mouth.
"No.""
I reached for her hand.
"Mom.""
"I don't understand.""
Daniel spoke gently.
"Based on the records, funds were transferred from accounts connected to your household.""
My mother's eyes filled with confusion.
"My money?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Through the authorization documents.""
The room went quiet.
Then my mother whispered:
"I trusted him.""
I squeezed her hand.
"I know.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I trusted him.""
This time, it wasn't sadness.
It was realization.
The painful moment when someone understands the person who hurt them was never confused.
Never careless.
They chose it.
Daniel opened another file.
"There is one more thing.""
"What?""
"We found the account Julian mentioned.""
My heart stopped.
"Where?""
"Connected to the company.""
"How much?""
Daniel looked at the papers.
"Currently, there is about $90,000 remaining.""
"Remaining?""
I repeated.
"Meaning?""
"Meaning more money was moved out before.""
I felt sick.
"Where did it go?""
Daniel looked at me.
"We traced several transfers.""
"To where?""
He hesitated.
Then pushed one document forward.
I read the name.
And everything inside me went cold.
Because the account receiving the money wasn't Julian's.
It wasn't a business account.
It wasn't a stranger.
It belonged to someone I knew.
Someone I never expected.
I looked at Daniel.
"Is this correct?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
My mother looked at the paper.
Then she froze.
"No.""
I turned it around so she could see.
The name was right there.
The person connected to the money.
The person Julian had been protecting.
The person who had been silent all this time.
Khloe.
My sister.
I couldn't speak.
Daniel continued quietly.
"We need to understand her involvement.""
My mother shook her head.
"No.""
Her voice broke.
"No, she wouldn't.""
I looked at the document.
The evidence.
The transfers.
The signatures.
The lies.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Khloe.
One sentence.
Please come alone. I need to tell you what really happened.
I stared at the screen.
Because suddenly I didn't know what scared me more.
May you like
Finding out Julian was worse than I thought.
Or discovering my sister might have known the truth all along.
