Chapter 8: The Secret My Sister Carried

For two years, I had imagined confronting Khloe.

I imagined anger.

Denial.

Excuses.

I imagined her standing beside Julian, defending every choice they made.

I never imagined seeing my sister walk through the door looking like she had finally run out of strength.

She closed the door behind her.

Then she looked at my mother.

"Mom.""

My mother didn't move.

Not because she was angry.

Because she was hurt.

A different kind of hurt.

The kind that comes when someone you love finally confirms what you feared.

Khloe looked at me.

"I know what you found.""

I held up my phone.

"Then explain it.""

Her eyes moved toward Julian.

He immediately stepped forward.

"Khloe.""

She flinched.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

And so did my mother.

"Don't," Khloe whispered.

Julian's face changed.

"Don't what?""

"Don't tell me what to say.""

The room went silent.

For the first time since I arrived, Khloe wasn't looking at him for approval.

She was looking at him like she was tired of being afraid.

I lowered my phone.

"Start talking.""

Khloe swallowed.

"It started before you left.""

I frowned.

"What started?""

She looked at my mother.

"The documents.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Khloe...""

"I'm sorry, Mom.""

That apology was the first honest thing I had heard from her in years.

She walked into the living room and sat down.

Julian remained standing.

Watching.

Waiting.

Like he was calculating his next move.

Khloe noticed.

And her voice became quieter.

"I should have told you.""

I stared.

"Yes.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

"Then why didn't you?""

She looked at her hands.

"Because I was scared.""

I almost laughed.

"Of me?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

She looked at Julian.

"Of him.""

The room changed.

My mother covered her mouth.

Julian's expression hardened.

"Careful, Khloe.""

She looked up.

"No.""

Her voice shook.

"But she deserves to know.""

I watched my sister carefully.

The person sitting in front of me looked nothing like the woman who had been silent downstairs.

This was not someone protecting Julian.

This was someone who had finally realized silence was destroying everyone.

"Two years ago," Khloe said, "when we moved in, Julian was already struggling.""

I crossed my arms.

"Financially?""

She nodded.

"His company was failing.""

Julian interrupted.

"That's not relevant.""

Khloe looked at him.

"It is.""

He went quiet.

"He told me he needed time.""

She continued.

"He said we just needed somewhere stable.""

My mother whispered:

"I wanted to help.""

Khloe looked at her.

"I know.""

Tears filled her eyes.

"That's why I feel horrible.""

I said nothing.

"At first, it was exactly what we said.""

Khloe looked at me.

"A few weeks.""

I nodded.

"Then?""

"Then Julian started talking about the house.""

My stomach tightened.

"He said it was a waste.""

"A waste?""

"Yes.""

She looked ashamed.

"He said Mom had more space than she needed.""

My hands curled into fists.

"He said you were too far away to understand.""

Of course.

There it was again.

The distance.

The six years overseas.

The thing he used as a weapon.

"What else?""

Khloe took a deep breath.

"He convinced me that if we controlled the house, we could protect Mom.""

I stared at her.

"Protect her?""

She nodded.

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds like a lie.""

She looked down.

"Because it was.""

Julian moved forward.

"Khloe, you're emotional.""

She immediately looked at him.

"No.""

A single word.

But powerful.

"No, Julian.""

He stopped.

"You told me we were helping her.""

Her voice broke.

"You told me the paperwork was temporary.""

Julian's expression changed.

"Because it was.""

"No.""

Khloe shook her head.

"It wasn't.""

She turned toward me.

"After she signed the documents, he started changing things.""

"What things?""

"The bank accounts.""

My mother's face went pale.

"Khloe.""

"I didn't know everything.""

She looked at her mother.

"I swear.""

My mother looked hurt.

"But you knew something.""

Khloe started crying.

"Yes.""

The admission hung in the air.

"I knew he was taking too much.""

I stared at her.

"How much?""

She wiped her face.

"I don't know.""

"Try.""

She looked at Julian.

"He moved money.""

"How much?""

"I saw one transfer.""

"What transfer?""

She hesitated.

"Twenty-five thousand.""

My heart sank.

"The one from the statement.""

She nodded.

"But there were others.""

Silence.

My mother sat down slowly.

"How many?""

Khloe whispered:

"I don't know.""

That was the moment I saw something break in my mother.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Hope.

Because she finally understood the person she had trusted most had been lying.

I sat beside her.

"Mom.""

She shook her head.

"I don't understand.""

Khloe looked at her.

"I know.""

"No.""

My mother's voice trembled.

"I helped you.""

"I know.""

"I opened my home.""

"I know.""

"Why?""

Khloe cried harder.

"I was selfish.""

My mother looked away.

That hurt.

Because she didn't yell.

She didn't curse.

She just looked disappointed.

And somehow that was worse.

Julian suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

"You really think this changes anything?""

His voice was colder now.

The mask was gone.

Khloe looked at him.

"What are you doing?""

He ignored her.

He looked at me.

"You think she is innocent?""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Your sister.""

Khloe froze.

"Natalie, ask her about the first document.""

My eyes moved to Khloe.

"What first document?""

She looked terrified.

"Khloe?""

She didn't answer.

"Tell me.""

Her face went pale.

"The first document...""

She swallowed.

"I signed it.""

The room went silent.

My mother looked at her.

"You?""

Khloe nodded.

"Before Mom signed anything, Julian made me sign a document.""

"What kind?""

"A partnership agreement.""

I stared.

"What does that mean?""

She looked at Julian.

"He said it was just between us.""

"Between you and who?""

"Me and him.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

Khloe looked at me.

"Because he needed someone connected to the family.""

I understood immediately.

"He used you.""

She nodded.

"He said if anything happened, I would be responsible.""

Julian laughed.

"You agreed.""

Khloe looked at him.

"I was manipulated.""

"No.""

His voice became sharp.

"You were greedy.""

The words hit her.

And I saw it.

The truth.

The part she had been avoiding.

Maybe she had not started this with evil intentions.

Maybe she had wanted to help.

But she had made choices.

Choices that hurt my mother.

Khloe looked at me.

"I thought we were saving ourselves.""

I looked at her.

"And Mom?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I thought she would forgive me.""

My mother stood.

Her voice was quiet.

"I always forgive you.""

Khloe cried.

"But?""

My mother's expression changed.

"But forgiveness doesn't mean pretending nothing happened.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Julian grabbed his jacket.

"We're done here.""

I looked at him.

"Where are you going?""

He smiled.

"Somewhere I don't have to listen to this.""

He walked toward the door.

I didn't stop him.

Because I wanted to see what he would do.

People reveal themselves when they think they are leaving.

His hand touched the doorknob.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The confidence disappeared.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

"Who is it?"" I asked.

He ignored me.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he answered.

"Hello?""

He listened.

His face changed.

"What do you mean?""

Another pause.

Then:

"No. That wasn't supposed to happen.""

My eyes narrowed.

Julian looked toward the window.

Away from all of us.

Away from everyone who could see him.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Listen carefully. If they found that account, we're finished.""

The call ended.

Slowly.

He turned around.

And for the first time...

he looked afraid.

Because whatever was in that account wasn't just about my mother's house.

It was something bigger.

May you like

Something that could destroy him.

And he knew we were about to find it.
