Chapter 4: The Plan Written Before My Daughter Was Born
The words on the paper looked ordinary.
That was the terrifying part.
There was no dramatic warning. No confession written in red ink. No sentence saying, We are going to destroy Naomi Carter.
Just a simple handwritten note attached to a business document.
Three words.
*“After she delivers…”*
I read them again.
Then again.
My fingers tightened around the folder until the edges pressed into my skin.
Rachel Bennett, the title company representative, stood quietly in front of me.
She didn’t look surprised.
She looked uncomfortable.
Like she had been carrying this information and waiting for the right moment to hand it over.
“After she delivers what?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
I looked at Derek.
His face had gone pale.
Not confused.
Not shocked.
Caught.
“Derek,” I said softly.
He stepped forward.
“Naomi, listen—”
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
It wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.
“No more explanations. No more excuses. I want the truth.””
Gloria immediately stepped in.
“This is being blown completely out of proportion.””
I turned toward her.
“Then explain the note.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Rachel cleared her throat.
“I should explain what happened from our side.””
I looked at her.
“Please.””
She opened the folder.
“The buyer was approached by your husband and Mrs. Carter approximately three months ago.””
Three months.
My stomach dropped.
Three months ago, I had been seven months pregnant.
Three months ago, Derek had been kissing my forehead every morning and telling me he couldn’t wait to meet our daughter.
Three months ago, he had held my hand during doctor appointments.
While planning to sell my home.
Rachel continued.
“The initial paperwork stated that the property would transfer immediately after confirmation that you had signed the documents.””
I stared at the page.
“But I never signed.””
“No.””
Rachel looked at Derek.
“That became an issue.””
Derek looked angry.
Not guilty.
Angry.
At being exposed.
“You don’t understand the circumstances,” he said.
Rachel’s expression remained professional.
“I understand that a property transfer cannot legally proceed with a forged signature.””
The word hung in the air.
Forged.
Gloria’s face hardened.
“Be careful with your accusations.””
Rachel looked at her.
“I am.””
Then she looked back at me.
“I’m here because the buyer discovered inconsistencies and wanted to avoid being involved in a legal dispute.””
I looked down at Ava.
My daughter slept peacefully.
Tiny fingers curled around the blanket.
She had no idea that while I was bringing her into the world, her father was trying to take away the only home she had inherited.
“Why the note?”” I asked.
Rachel hesitated.
“Because the buyer asked a question.””
“What question?””
She looked at Derek.
“Why the urgency?””
The silence answered.
Then Rachel said:
“Your husband told the buyer that once you gave birth, you would be too overwhelmed to fight the sale.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.
Not the wind.
Not the cars passing.
Not Gloria breathing beside me.
Just those words.
Too overwhelmed to fight.
Derek finally spoke.
“That’s not what I meant.””
I looked at him.
“Then what did you mean?””
He had no answer.
“You thought I would be weak.””
“No.””
“You thought because I had just had a baby, I wouldn’t notice.””
“Naomi—”
“You thought becoming a mother would make me easier to control.””
His silence was louder than any confession.
I turned away.
Because if I kept looking at him, I didn’t know what I would do.
Rachel closed the folder.
“There is another thing.””
I looked back.
“What?””
“The buyer received additional documents from your husband.””
“What documents?””
She handed me another page.
I read the title.
*Temporary Financial Authority Agreement.*
My hands began shaking.
“What is this?””
Rachel answered carefully.
“It appears Mr. Carter attempted to establish control over several accounts connected to the property.””
I looked at Derek.
“You tried to access my accounts?””
His jaw tightened.
“I was trying to protect our family.””
I laughed.
A broken, empty sound.
“You keep saying that.””
I stepped closer.
“But everything you did destroyed it.””
Gloria suddenly snapped.
“Enough.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at me.
“You are acting like you are the only victim here.””
The anger inside me burned.
“Explain.””
“You have no idea how difficult it has been watching Derek struggle.””
I stared.
“He hid a failed business from me.””
“Because he was ashamed.””
“He tried to sell my house.””
“Because he needed help.””
“He forged my name.””
“He made a mistake.””
I looked at her.
A cold realization settled over me.
She didn’t see what happened.
She justified it.
That was worse.
“You would have let him do anything,” I whispered.
Gloria lifted her chin.
“I would protect my son.””
I nodded slowly.
“Even from the consequences of his own choices.””
“Yes.””
She said it without hesitation.
And somehow, that honesty hurt more than a lie.
Rachel stepped back.
“I think I should leave you all to discuss this privately.””
I stopped her.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I need you to stay.””
Derek’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
I looked at him.
“Because I’m done having private conversations with people who rewrite the truth afterward.””
For once, he had nothing to say.
Rachel nodded.
“I’ll stay.””
I opened the folder again.
There were dates.
Messages.
Emails.
Everything they had tried to hide.
Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.
A calendar entry.
Created six weeks before Ava was born.
The title was simple.
*“Move Naomi Out.””*
I looked at Derek.
“When were you planning to tell me?””
He didn’t answer.
“When?””
His voice was barely audible.
“After the hospital.””
My heart shattered all over again.
Not because he betrayed me.
I already knew that.
Because he waited until I was at my weakest.
Until I was holding our child.
Until I had nowhere to go.
I closed the folder.
“Derek.””
He looked up.
“I have one question.””
He swallowed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“Did you ever plan to come home and tell me the truth?””
The silence lasted too long.
And then his eyes dropped.
That was the answer.
Before anyone could speak, Rachel’s phone rang.
She answered.
“Hello?””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
She walked a few steps away.
Then turned back toward us.
“Naomi.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She ended the call.
“The buyer found something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Rachel looked directly at Derek.
“The buyer says your husband promised him something that was never part of the property sale.””
Derek looked terrified.
“What are you talking about?””
Rachel opened the folder again.
And pulled out a document I had never seen before.
“He promised access to the house.””
She placed it in my hands.
“But not just access.””
I looked at the page.
There was a handwritten agreement.
And at the bottom was Derek’s signature.
The agreement was dated one week before Ava was born.

And the final line said:
*“Naomi Carter will not be informed until after possession.””*
