Chapter 3: The Person Who Opened The Door
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because Ava cried.
She barely did.
She was peaceful, unaware that her mother’s entire world had been turned upside down before she was even old enough to open her eyes.
I sat in the guest room of a friend’s house, holding my daughter while rain tapped against the window.
The document Martin gave me sat on the table.
I had looked at it so many times that the words blurred.
Derek Carter.
And beneath his name…
Evelyn Carter.
My mother-in-law.
Of course.
The woman who had stood in my home and told me I no longer belonged there.
The woman who had watched me walk in exhausted from childbirth.
The woman who had never once asked if I was okay.
She had signed documents trying to take control of something that belonged to me.
At sunrise, Martin called.
“Naomi?””
“I’m awake.””
“You should rest.””
I looked at Ava sleeping against my chest.
“I don’t think I can.””
There was a pause.
Then he said, “Your father expected something like this might happen.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“He specifically instructed me to watch for unusual activity involving the property.””
My heart tightened.
“My father knew?””
“He knew people could change.””
I looked at the photo on my nightstand.
A picture of my father and me in the garden.
“He never liked Derek.””
Martin was quiet.
“He respected that Derek loved you.””
I almost laughed.
“Did he?””
“He hoped he did.””
The honesty hurt.
Because my father had always been careful with his words.
He never accused.
He only warned.
And I had been too in love to listen.
Later that morning, I returned to the house.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I needed answers.
Derek was waiting outside.
He looked different.
Smaller.
The confident man who had handed me money like I was a problem to remove was gone.
“Naomi.””
I kept walking.
“Please.””
I stopped.
“Why?””
His face tightened.
“Why what?””
“Why did you do it?””
He looked away.
That was his answer.
“Derek.””
Finally, he whispered, “My business failed.””
I stared at him.
“When?””
“Months ago.””
The betrayal deepened.
“You lied to me.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“No. You were trying to use my house to fix it.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“My mother said it was the only option.””
There it was.
The sentence that proved everything.
“You let your mother convince you to steal from me?””
His eyes filled with frustration.
“I didn’t think it would get this far.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t think about me.””
A tear slipped down my cheek, but I refused to wipe it away.
“You didn’t think about Ava.””
He looked at the baby carrier.
For one second, guilt crossed his face.
Then the front door opened.
Gloria stepped outside.
“I see the family meeting has started without me.””
I turned toward her.
“Family?””
She ignored the word.
“You’re making a huge mistake, Naomi.””
I almost smiled.
“Am I?””
“Yes. Derek made a bad decision, but destroying your marriage over paperwork is childish.””
I stared at her.
“Paperwork?””
She stepped closer.
“You have a child now. You need stability.””
I looked at Ava.
Then back at her.
“No. My daughter needs a mother who protects her.””
Gloria’s expression changed.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
I held up the document.
“Tell me something, Gloria.””
“What?””
“Whose idea was it to file for control of my estate?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
Then she said something I would never forget.
“Your father spoiled you.””
The world seemed to stop.
“My father?””
“Yes. He gave you everything. A house.
Money. Security.””
She looked at the mansion behind her.
“You never had to struggle.””
I stared at her.
Because finally, I understood.
She wasn’t angry because I had something.
She was angry because she believed she deserved it.
Before I could answer, a black SUV pulled into the driveway.
A woman stepped out holding a folder.
Derek immediately looked nervous.
“Who is that?””
I recognized her.
Not personally.
But from the name written on the papers Martin had shown me.
The woman walked toward us.
“Naomi Carter?””
“Yes?””
She handed me the folder.
“My name is Rachel Bennett. I’m with the title company that handled the attempted sale.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why are you here?””
She glanced at Derek.
Then at Gloria.
“Because there’s something you need to see.””
I opened the folder.
Inside was a copy of the original sale agreement.
My hands went cold.
Because at the bottom of the page, beneath the forged signature, there was one more detail.
A handwritten note from the buyer.
A note that revealed Derek and Gloria had been planning this long before I went into labor.

And it began with three words:
*“After she delivers…”*
