Chapter 6 - AN UNEXPECTED ALLIANCE

Three days later, a woman showed up at the gate. She stood uncertainly on the sidewalk, glancing toward the house, clutching a handbag tight against her chest. She looked familiar somehow—dark hair pulled back neatly, face pale, eyes red-rimmed as if she had been crying or had not slept in days.
I walked out onto the porch. The security guard stayed close.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
She took a breath, stepped closer, and spoke in a hurried whisper. “My name is Sarah. I work in the records department at the courthouse. I… I saw your name on the order Mr. Carter filed. And then I saw yours on the request.” She looked over her shoulder nervously before continuing. “I shouldn’t be here. If anyone finds out, I could lose my job. But I saw what he attached to the request. I saw the reason he gave.”
My pulse quickened. “What reason?”
She hesitated, wringing her hands. “He claims there was a mistake on the original birth certificate. That he is not the biological father. And he filed paperwork naming someone else. Someone whose rights would supersede yours.”
The ground seemed to tilt beneath my feet. “That is impossible. He signed it. He was there.”
“I know. I read the file. The man he named… his name is on a separate document, filed the very same day Noah was born. It looks like a formal acknowledgment of paternity. Signed by a different man. Witnessed by Diane Carter. And then sealed immediately.” She swallowed hard. “Mr. Carter and Diane signed a statement saying they withheld this information from you because they believed you would choose the other man if you knew. They say you were never told. And now they intend to give custody to him.”
I gripped the porch rail to steady myself. Acknowledgment of paternity. Filed the same day Noah was born. Witnessed by Diane. Another man. All kept hidden from me for four years.
“Why?” I whispered. “Why would they do this?”
Sarah looked at me, her expression sorrowful. “The man named… he comes from a very wealthy family. Very powerful. There are trusts. Inheritance. And Noah was born just in time to qualify.”
It hit me then like a physical blow. That was why. Not because Ryan loved Noah. Not because they wanted to protect him. Because Noah was worth money. A great deal of money. Ryan and Diane had hidden Noah’s true parentage, pretended Noah was Ryan’s son, and waited. They had planned to hold Noah until the deadline passed—until Noah turned six—and then claim the fortune for themselves. And when I discovered the truth and stood in their way… they would have me removed.
Sarah reached into her bag and pulled out a folded sheet of paper. “I made a copy of the name page. I shouldn’t have. But my own son… I couldn’t let them do this to another mother.” She pressed it into my hand. “Be careful. They have already approached this man. They told him you were unstable and that they were protecting the boy. He intends to come for him.”
Before I could thank her, she turned and hurried away, disappearing down the street. I unfolded the paper with trembling fingers. At the bottom, in neat handwriting, was a signature. Above it, printed clearly:
FATHER: JULIAN HAWTHORNE.
I stared at the name. Julian Hawthorne. I knew that name. Everyone did. One of the wealthiest men in the state. Head of the Hawthorne Group. A man I had never met in my life. A man I certainly had not been involved with four years ago.
May you like
Which meant one final, terrible thing.
Ryan and Diane had not just kept a secret from me. They had swapped Noah’s identity at birth. And the man named on that paper was not Noah’s father. He was the father of another child—who had been switched with mine.
