Chapter 18 - THE CONFRONTATION

I decided to find him. To speak to him. To demand the truth.
I left the rear door unlocked that night. I sat in the living room, lights dim, waiting. Around two in the morning, I heard the floorboard creak. I turned and saw him standing in the doorway—wet, shivering, eyes hollow and exhausted.
“Ryan,” I said quietly. “Come in.”
He hesitated, then stepped inside, keeping his distance as if afraid I might call for help at any moment.
“They are going to take him,” Ryan said immediately, his voice cracking. “The investors. They do not care about the truth or the law. They say we broke the deal. That if the fortune is not accessible by Noah’s sixth birthday, they will take the boy and sell their claim to someone else. No one will ever see him again.”
“Why are you telling me this now?” I asked. “After everything you did.”
“Because I saw the chain. I saw the fear in your face. And then I saw what they are capable of. They threatened to kill me if I did not deliver Noah to them. They said I had two choices—bring them the boy, or die myself.” He ran a trembling hand through his hair. “I could not do it, Emily. I stood outside his window every night. And I could not bring myself to hand him over to monsters. But neither could I run far enough to escape them.”
“Who are they?” Julian asked, stepping out from the hallway where he had been standing quietly.
Ryan flinched but did not run. “A man named Vance. He runs the group. He has men everywhere. They know where you live. They know where the Millers live. They know everything. They gave me until tomorrow night to bring Noah to them. If I do not… they will come and take him themselves.”
“Then we will be ready for them,” Julian said.
Ryan looked up, tears spilling over. “You do not understand. They do not fight fair. They have weapons. They have nothing to lose. If you fight… they may hurt him. To force our hands.”
I stood up, steady and cold. “Then we will meet them on our terms. You will go to them, Ryan. You will tell them you have me convinced. That I am bringing Noah. And when they arrive to collect him… the police will be waiting.”
Ryan stared at me, horrified. “They will kill me.”

“You will be protected,” I said. “And this is your only chance to make amends. Help us stop them, Ryan, and testify against them, and Margaret will argue for leniency on your behalf. Refuse… and you face prison for everything you and Diane did. The choice is yours.”
He looked at me. At the stairs where Noah slept safely above. And then, slowly, he nodded.
