Chapter 19 - THE FINAL STAND

The trap was set. Ryan contacted Vance and confirmed the arrangement—he would deliver Noah to an isolated warehouse on the edge of town at midnight. He would bring the boy alone, and in exchange, his debts would be cleared and no harm would come to anyone else.
Every law enforcement agency we could call was positioned and waiting. Snipers on the rooftops. Plainclothes officers surrounding the perimeter. Police vans hidden down side streets. Margaret had worked through the night to secure warrants and coordinating jurisdiction. Julian stood beside me, armed and cleared to assist if needed, his eyes hard and determined.
At five minutes to midnight, Ryan walked into the warehouse alone.
We watched through surveillance feeds. Vance appeared with three armed men. They circled Ryan, demanding the boy. Ryan stalled, buying time, describing Noah, describing the “arrangements” we had supposedly made. I held my breath, praying Ryan would keep his nerve.
Then Vance grew suspicious. He signaled one of his men to go and collect the boy himself.
“Move,” Julian said quietly into his radio.
Officers burst from hiding. Shouts. Commands. The crack of gunfire in the air as warning shots were fired. Vance tried to grab Ryan as a shield, but Ryan fought back, landing a blow before diving clear. Officers swarmed in, securing everyone, disarming them, placing Vance and his men in cuffs before they could fire a single shot at each other or anyone else.
It was over in minutes.
Later, as Vance and his men were led away in handcuffs, Ryan stood in the shadows of the warehouse, bloodied and trembling, staring at his hands. He walked over to me, his face pale in the red and blue flashing lights.
“I did it,” he whispered. “I kept him safe.”
“You did,” I said. “For once.”
“I will testify. Against all of them. And against myself. I will tell the courts everything. I deserve whatever happens to me.” He looked past me toward the car where Noah waited inside, watched over by a trusted officer. “Can you tell him… tell him I was sorry? That I tried?”
May you like
“I will,” I said.
Ryan nodded. He looked as though he wanted to say more, but officers stepped forward and placed him in cuffs. He went quietly. Without a backward glance.
