Chapter 8: The Man Who Wanted Everything
The meeting took place the next morning.
A private office downtown.
Glass walls.
Expensive furniture.
The kind of place Daniel’s father would have loved.
A place designed to make people feel small.
I walked in beside my sons.
Daniel walked ahead.
Rachel followed behind us.
The man waiting inside looked exactly like Daniel twenty years older.
Same sharp eyes.
Same controlled expression.
Same confidence.
Richard Whitmore.
Daniel’s father.
He stood slowly.
“So.””
His eyes moved toward Eli and Owen.
“These are the boys.””
My hands tightened.
Not “my grandsons.””
Not “Daniel’s children.””
Just “the boys.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stay away from them.””
Richard smiled.
“You always were dramatic.””
Owen looked at him.
“You threatened our family?””
Richard looked amused.
“I protected an investment.””
Eli’s face changed.
“They’re people.””
Richard shrugged.
“Everything has value.””
I felt sick.
Daniel stared at his father.
“You ruined my life.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“No.””
He walked closer.
“You ruined your own life when you chose emotions over success.””
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“You made me leave my family.””
“I gave you a choice.””
“You threatened them.””
Richard looked at me.
“Did he tell you that?””
I stepped forward.
“I know enough.””
Richard smiled.
“No, Claire. You know the story he created.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Don’t.””
Richard ignored him.
“Your husband was not a victim.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then explain.””
Richard walked to a table.
He placed a folder down.
Inside were documents.
Patents.
Research papers.
Ownership records.
He looked at my sons.
“Your father stole this technology from me.””
Eli frowned.
“What?””
Richard pointed at Daniel.
“He worked for me. I funded his education. I gave him resources.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You tried to own me.””
Richard smiled.
“I gave you an opportunity.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“That’s not true.””
Richard looked at her.
“You.””
The room changed.
Because his voice was no longer calm.
It was angry.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Rachel didn’t move.
“You should have stopped hurting people.””
Richard stared at her.
Then he turned back to us.
“She knows nothing.””
Rachel opened her folder.
“I know everything.””
She pulled out a document.
“The original invention records.””
Richard’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You kept copies.””
Rachel nodded.
“Daniel’s mother asked me to protect them.””
I looked at Rachel.
“Daniel’s mother?””
She nodded.
“She knew what he was doing.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“What?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Your mother found out your father was forcing you to give up the invention.””
Daniel went quiet.
“She tried to help you.””
My heart broke for him.
Because suddenly I understood.
Daniel hadn’t just lost his marriage.
He had lost the chance to explain himself to everyone.
Richard stepped forward.
“This is irrelevant.””
“No,” Rachel said.
“It’s everything.””
She opened another file.
“This contains your father’s private recordings.””
Richard froze.
Daniel looked at her.
“You found them?””
“Yes.””
“What recordings?””
Rachel looked at Richard.
“His conversations.””
The room became silent.
Then Rachel pressed play.
A voice filled the room.
Richard’s voice.
*“Make Daniel disappear. Make Claire believe he abandoned them. Once he leaves, the invention belongs to us.””*
Nobody moved.
I felt my entire body go cold.
Daniel closed his eyes.
He heard it.
The proof he had waited thirteen years for.
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“Fake.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
She held up another device.
“Backed up on multiple servers.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“How could you?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Because I knew you would waste your potential.””
“You destroyed my family.””
“I saved your future.””
Daniel laughed.
A painful sound.
“You don’t even understand what you did.””
Richard looked at Eli and Owen.
“Those boys wouldn’t exist without my influence.””
That was when I stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“You don’t get credit for the people you hurt.””
Richard stared.
I continued.
“They became successful despite you.””
The silence was powerful.
Because for the first time, Richard had no answer.
Then Eli walked toward the table.
He picked up one of the documents.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He studied the pages.
Then frowned.
“Something’s wrong.””
Daniel moved closer.
“What?””
Eli pointed.
“The patent numbers.””
Rachel looked.
Then her face changed.
“Oh no.””
Owen looked confused.
“What?””
Rachel whispered:
“These aren’t ownership documents.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then what are they?””
She stared at Richard.
“They’re transfer documents.””
Richard smiled.
And for the first time, I understood.
May you like
He wasn’t trying to prove he owned the invention.
He was trying to steal it again.
