Chapter 6: The Enemy Who Watched From the Shadows

The words stayed in the room.

They exposed a secret.

For thirteen years, I thought the worst thing Daniel had done was leave.

I was wrong.

The worst thing was that someone had been watching us.

Waiting.

For what?

I looked at Rachel.

“Explain.””

She opened the folder.

“Daniel’s original invention was designed to improve energy efficiency in robotics systems.””

Eli stepped closer.

“The system we built?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Owen looked confused.

“But we created that ourselves.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“And that’s what makes it dangerous.””

I looked at him.

“Dangerous?””

He nodded.

“My father wanted the invention because he knew what it could become.””

Rachel continued.

“He tried to claim ownership years ago. When Daniel refused, he destroyed the project records.””

She pointed at the papers.

“But he missed one copy.””

I looked down.

The old photograph.

The handwritten note.

The original designs.

Everything suddenly connected.

“He kept them?””

Daniel nodded.

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

Daniel looked at my sons.

“In our house.””

The boys looked shocked.

“Our house?””

“The garage wall.””

I remembered.

The old storage area.

The place where Daniel used to work.

The place I cleaned after he left.

“You knew?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became heavy.

“I found out years later.””

Eli looked angry.

“So all this time…”

Daniel nodded.

“I was trying to get back what was stolen.””

Owen stared at him.

“And us?””

Daniel looked at him.

“That’s what I lost.””

The silence afterward hurt.

Because everyone knew there was no easy apology big enough.

A person could say sorry.

But they couldn’t erase birthdays.

They couldn’t replace childhood.

They couldn’t return thirteen years.

Rachel closed the folder.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Your ex-husband’s father isn’t the only person involved.””

Daniel immediately looked up.

“What are you talking about?””

Rachel pulled out another document.

“This came from the championship review.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because someone attempted to remove Eli and Owen’s names from the finalist list.””

The room went silent.

Owen stepped back.

“Someone tried to cheat?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.””

Rachel placed the document on the table.

The signature at the bottom was clear.

Vanessa Whitmore.

My heart dropped.

Daniel stared.

“She wouldn’t.””

Rachel looked at him.

“She already did.””

For a moment, Daniel said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Why?””

I almost laughed.

Because after everything, he still seemed surprised.

People who built their lives on winning often couldn’t understand why others would destroy someone else to protect themselves.

Rachel answered.

“Because Mason was supposed to win.””

The truth landed heavily.

Vanessa hadn’t just been cruel.

She had been threatened by my sons.

Not because they were better.

Because they proved they didn’t need wealth to succeed.

My phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t unknown.

It was Vanessa.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Claire.””

I said nothing.

“I think we need to talk.””

“About what?””

A pause.

“About your sons.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What about them?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You really think they won because they were better?””

Eli and Owen looked at me.

I put the call on speaker.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa.””

Her voice changed.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“You’re there?””

Nobody spoke.

Then she sighed.

“I suppose Rachel finally told you.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Told me what?””

“The truth.””

Her voice became colder.

“You always were terrible at protecting the people you loved.””

My chest tightened.

“Vanessa, what did you do?””

She ignored me.

“Daniel, you should have stayed away.””

He stared at the phone.

“Did you know?””

“Yes.””

The answer came instantly.

“You knew about my father?””

“Yes.””

“You knew what happened?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“Why?””

Vanessa laughed.

“Because I wanted the life you promised me.””

The room went silent.

Then she said the words that changed everything:

“And now that your sons have the invention, I’m going to make sure nobody ever finds out who really created it.””

The call ended.

Everyone stood frozen.

Then Eli’s laptop suddenly lit up.

An alert appeared on the screen.

*Unauthorized access detected.*

Owen rushed toward it.

“Someone is inside the system.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

Not for himself.

For them.

Because whoever had spent thirteen years hiding the truth…

May you like

had just started a new attack.

And this time, they were coming after his sons.
