Chapter 13: The Truth I Never Wanted

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Ryan.

Not Eleanor.

Not even Mark.

The man who had spent twenty-two years teaching me how to stand when life knocked me down was now standing in front of me, looking like he was the reason I had fallen.

“Me?””

My voice barely came out.

“You’re saying you were responsible?””

Mark’s eyes filled with tears.

“Not the way you think.””

I laughed.

A broken, empty sound.

“Isn’t that what everyone says?””

Victor.

Richard.

Everyone who had a secret.

Everyone who had hidden behind the same sentence.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I don’t.””

The pain in his face was unbearable.

But I couldn’t comfort him.

Not this time.

Not when my entire life had just shifted again.

“Explain.””

Mark nodded slowly.

“I will.””

He sat down.

Not because he was tired.

Because he looked like his legs could no longer hold him.

“The night your mother died…”

He stopped.

Took a breath.

“I wasn’t just following her.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“I was meeting someone.””

“Who?””

Mark looked at the floor.

“Victor.””

The room went silent.

My mind struggled to understand.

“You were meeting Victor?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he contacted me.””

I stared.

“Why would he contact you?””

Mark looked at the old photograph on the table.

“Because he knew I knew about the trust.””

“But you weren’t involved.””

“I wasn’t.””

His voice became harder.

“Not in the way he wanted.””

I folded my arms.

“Then what happened?””

Mark closed his eyes.

“Victor offered me money.””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“Money?””

Mark nodded.

“He knew I was struggling after your mother got sick. He knew I had medical bills. He knew I was barely keeping everything together.””

My chest hurt.

Because I remembered those years.

Mark coming home exhausted.

Mark pretending he wasn’t hungry so I could have the last piece of chicken.

Mark repairing old clothes instead of buying new ones.

“He offered you money to leave?””

Mark looked at me.

“No.””

“Then what?””

“He offered money to convince your mother to give him access.””

I felt sick.

“And you refused.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide this?””

Mark looked destroyed.

“Because I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He swallowed.

“I met him.””

The answer felt too small.

Too simple.

“You meeting him isn’t the reason my mother died.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“But it changed what happened that night.””

Nobody spoke.

Mark continued.

“When Victor realized I wouldn’t help him, he became angry.””

“How angry?””

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

“He said if I got in his way, he would destroy everything.””

I looked at the files.

“The accident.””

Mark nodded.

“I followed your mother because I knew something was wrong.””

“Did you know he was going after her?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

“I saw Victor leave.””

The room went quiet.

“Where?””

“Your mother’s office.””

My heart raced.

“What was he doing there?””

“Taking documents.””

“The evidence.””

“Yes.””

“Did you confront him?””

Mark looked away.

“Yes.””

My breathing stopped.

“What happened?””

“I followed him to the road.””

“Then?””

Mark’s hands shook.

“I tried to stop him.””

“Stop him from doing what?””

Mark looked at me.

“He was driving toward your mother.””

A cold wave moved through me.

“What?””

“I don’t know if he intended to hit her.””

“Mark.””

“I swear I don’t know.””

His voice broke.

“But when I saw her car crash, I ran.””

I stared.

“And?””

“I found her.””

My eyes burned.

“She was alive.””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Mark looked at me.

“She told me Victor had caused it.””

I closed my eyes.

My mother’s final moments.

Fear.

Pain.

Still protecting me.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Mark’s tears finally fell.

“Because when the police arrived…”

He stopped.

“Because what?””

“Because they found something in my car.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“A piece of the broken brake line.””

Silence.

“What?””

Mark looked ashamed.

“I had picked it up.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted proof.””

“You took evidence?””

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“You destroyed the investigation.””

“No.””

He shook his head quickly.

“I didn’t destroy it.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because Victor’s lawyer found out.””

“What?””

Mark nodded.

“Your grandfather’s lawyer.””

Richard.

The name echoed.

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

“With you.””

I looked at him.

“He said if I spoke, they would make sure you lost everyone.””

I felt tears building.

“So you stayed silent.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe Victor abandoned us.””

“Yes.””

“You let me hate him.””

Mark closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“And you let me hate you.””

A painful silence.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I never wanted you to hate me.””

“But I did.””

The words hurt both of us.

“I chose him.””

Mark nodded.

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you fight?””

His answer destroyed me.

“Because your mother told me not to.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She knew you needed to choose for yourself.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“She knew?””

Mark nodded.

“Before she died, she told me something.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She said, ‘If Clara ever chooses him, let her. She needs to learn who people are by what they do, not what they promise.’”

I covered my face.

Because suddenly I understood.

My mother knew.

Mark knew.

Everyone had been trying to give me the one thing I never gave myself.

The chance to see.

The chance to choose.

Then Eleanor spoke.

“There’s still one problem.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed at the computer.

“The person who corrupted the video.””

Everyone became silent.

Mark looked at the screen.

“I didn’t do that.””

I believed him.

And that scared me.

Because if Mark wasn’t responsible…

Someone else was still hiding.

Eleanor checked the access record again.

Her expression changed.

“Oh no.””

“What?””

She turned the laptop toward us.

“The file was accessed after Mark.””

My heart dropped.

“By who?””

May you like

She whispered:

“Victor.””
