Chapter 12: The Person Nobody Suspected
We didn’t open the flash drive immediately.
That sounds impossible.
After everything.
After twenty-two years of secrets.
After finding evidence hidden by my mother.
I should have wanted every answer instantly.
But something inside me hesitated.
Because answers were dangerous.
Answers changed people.
Sometimes ignorance was painful.
Truth was permanent.
We took everything back to my apartment.
Eleanor connected the flash drive to her laptop.
The screen filled with files.
Documents.
Audio recordings.
Photos.
Messages.
My mother had created an entire archive.
A record of everything.
“Your mother was thorough,” Eleanor whispered.
“She knew she had to be.””
Mark stood behind us.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
I noticed.
“Are you okay?””
He nodded.
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I’m not.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because I spent twenty-two years hoping this day would never come.””
The answer hurt.
“Why?””
“Because I knew once you saw everything, you’d have to see me differently.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because he was right.
I already did.
Not because I loved him less.
Because I finally saw him as a person.
Someone scared.
Someone imperfect.
Someone who carried a burden too heavy for one person.
Eleanor opened the first file.
A video appeared.
My mother.
Older than the photos I remembered.
Tired.
But alive.
My breath caught.
I had not seen her move in years.
Not heard her voice.
“Clara,” she said on the screen.
I covered my mouth.
“If you’re watching this, then I’m sorry.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t explain everything myself.””
She looked down.
“I need you to understand something.””
The video paused briefly.
Then continued.
“Your father’s return will not be about forgiveness.””
I froze.
“It will be about access.””
My hands tightened.
“He will tell you he missed you.””
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“He will tell you he regrets leaving.””
Another pause.
“Some of that may even be true.””
I looked at Eleanor.
She nodded.
“He may regret losing you.””
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“But regret is not the same as change.””
Silence.
Then:
“Victor did not act alone.””
The words.
The same words from the letter.
My mother continued.
“There was someone who helped him. Someone who knew our family. Someone who knew exactly how to hide things.””
I leaned forward.
“Who?””
The video continued.
“I don’t know if you will believe this.””
My mother’s voice shook.
“But the person who helped Victor was…”
The screen suddenly froze.
Everyone stared.
“What happened?””
Eleanor checked the computer.
“The file is corrupted.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Fix it.””
“I’m trying.””
Mark looked terrified.
“Someone damaged it.””
Eleanor nodded.
“Recently.””
I looked at her.
“How do you know?””
“Because the corruption wasn’t old.””
My stomach turned.
“Someone accessed this.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
She checked the file information.
Her face changed.
“Two days ago.””
The room went silent.
Two days ago.
The day before my wedding.
Someone knew.
Someone knew I was about to find out.
Ryan stood.
“Who had access?””
Eleanor looked at the screen.
“There’s a login record.””
“Whose?””
She clicked.
The name appeared.
I stared.
Then my heart stopped.
Because the person who accessed my mother’s files was not Victor.
Not Richard.
Not some stranger.
It was someone sitting in this room.
Someone I had trusted my entire life.
Someone who had held my hand through every heartbreak.
Someone who had told me he wanted to protect me.
Mark.
I looked at him.
The silence was unbearable.
“Mark.””
His face went pale.
“I can explain.””
My heart shattered.
Because those were the exact words every person says when the truth is already impossible to ignore.
“You accessed my mother’s files?””
He didn’t answer.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was trying to stop you from finding them.””
The room went completely still.
Ryan stepped closer to me.
“Clara.””
But I couldn’t move.
“Why?””
Mark looked at the screen.
Then at me.
“Because your mother left something out.””
“What?””
His voice broke.
“The truth about what happened that night…”
He swallowed.
“It wasn’t just Victor who was responsible.””
I stared.
“Then who?””
Mark closed his eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
“Me.””
