Chapter 8: The Secret Hidden in the Groom's Photograph

Elena held the photograph with trembling fingers.

Tyler stood beside her, his face drained of color as he studied the document Michael had removed from the envelope.

The marriage record listed Tyler Morgan as one of the parties.

It also listed a woman named Rebecca Shaw.

The date was four years earlier.

Elena looked at him.

“Tell me what this is.””

Tyler swallowed.

“I don't know.””

“You're listed as the groom.””

“I can see that.””

“And you're standing beside her.””

“I've never met her.””

Robert folded his arms.

“Perhaps your fiancé has something to explain.””

Tyler turned sharply.

“Did you send this?””

Robert raised his hands.

“I have no idea what you're talking about.””

“You're enjoying this,” Tyler said.

“I am concerned about Elena's future.””

“Then stop using her wedding to threaten her.””

The officiant approached us, holding the marriage license folder.

“I've been informed that there may be an issue requiring clarification before the ceremony can proceed.””

Elena looked as though she might collapse.

“Is the wedding canceled?””

“Not necessarily,” Michael replied.

“A document delivered anonymously is not proof that the marriage record is genuine. We need to verify it before making assumptions.””

The officiant nodded.

“I cannot proceed until the concern is resolved.””

Elena stared at Tyler.

“Did you ever marry someone else?””

“No.””

“Were you engaged?””

“No.””

“Did you ever sign marriage papers?””

“Never.””

She searched his face.

“Then why is your name on this?””

Tyler looked toward Michael.

“Can we check the record?””

“Yes,” Michael said.

“We'll contact the relevant office through official channels. We should also preserve the envelope and photograph.””

He asked the coordinator to document when the envelope had arrived and who had handled it. Then he photographed the contents and placed them in a protective sleeve.

Robert stepped closer.

“Perhaps this is a sign that the wedding shouldn't happen today.””

Elena spun toward him.

“You don't get to decide that!””

“I'm trying to protect you.””

“No. You're trying to make sure I have nobody left to trust.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“That's an ugly accusation.””

“Is it?””

She lifted the photograph.

“You told me Daniel didn't deserve to walk me down the aisle. You told me the estate documents were a gift. You threatened me when I refused to sign them.””

She took a shaky breath.

“And now someone has delivered a document accusing my fiancé of being married to another woman.””

Robert stared at her.

“You're blaming me for something I didn't do.””

“I'm asking questions. You should try answering them sometime.””

For a moment, I thought Robert might shout.

Instead, he smiled.

It was the same polished smile he had worn when he first walked into our home.

“Ask whatever you want, Elena. The truth always comes out.””

He turned and walked toward the side entrance.

Michael watched him go.

Then he looked at Tyler.

“We need to establish where you were on the date shown in this document.””

Tyler nodded.

“I was working in Chicago. I have employment records, hotel receipts, and emails from a conference.””

“Good. Preserve them.””

Elena stared at him.

“You were in Chicago?””

“Yes. I told you about that conference when we first started dating.””

She pressed her hand against her forehead.

“I remember.””

Tyler stepped closer.

“Look at me.””

She did.

“I love you. I have never been married to anyone else.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I want to believe you.””

“Then let me prove it.””

He took her hand.

“I won't ask you to ignore evidence. I'll help you verify it.””

That answer seemed to steady her.

Michael called the appropriate records office and requested verification of the alleged marriage record. He explained that the document had been delivered anonymously and that the named party disputed its authenticity.

The clerk could not confirm every detail immediately, but agreed to review the record number and return the call.

While we waited, Stephen Bell continued examining the estate ledger.

He had found another discrepancy.

The disputed transfer using my name had been followed by a second transfer to a company registered under a different name.

The amount was smaller, but the timing was significant.

“Someone split the funds,” Stephen explained.

“The first transfer was recorded as an estate expense. The second was classified as a repayment to a related business.””

Michael frowned.

“Were these transactions approved by the trustee?””

“I couldn't find an approval.””

“Could Robert have authorized them?””

“Not under the original trust agreement. But the accounting records show that someone later entered an authorization under Daniel's name.””

I stared at the ledger.

“Why would Robert use my name?””

Stephen shook his head.

“I don't know. Perhaps he believed it would be less suspicious if the transaction appeared to have been approved by someone outside the Hayes family.””

“Or perhaps someone else used it,” Michael said.

“We need to establish who created the entries and when.””

Stephen nodded.

“I agree.””

Elena had been listening.

“Could this be why Robert wanted me to sign the new agreement?””

Michael answered carefully.

“It could be connected. If he has an unresolved claim against the estate, the trust restrictions may prevent him from obtaining control of the assets. A new authorization might help him argue that you consented to his involvement. But we need the complete evidence before reaching a conclusion.””

Elena looked at the altar.

The flowers she had chosen were arranged in perfect symmetry. Two hundred guests were waiting in the pews. Her wedding dress trailed behind her like a promise she no longer knew how to keep.

“I wanted today to be perfect,” she whispered.

Tyler touched her cheek.

“Perfect was never the requirement.””

She let out a small, broken laugh.

“You say that now.””

“I'll say it tomorrow too.””

She leaned against him.

Then Michael's phone rang.

The records office had called back.

He listened carefully, asked the clerk to repeat the record number, and wrote something on a notepad.

When he hung up, he looked at Tyler.

“The office cannot verify the document as an authentic marriage record. The number doesn't match the format used by the issuing jurisdiction for that year.””

Tyler closed his eyes in relief.

Elena gripped his hand.

“So it's fake?””

“It appears to be irregular,” Michael replied.

“We still need written confirmation. But the record number is a serious inconsistency.””

Tyler exhaled.

“I told you I've never been married.””

Elena turned toward him.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

She looked down.

“I want to.””

He stepped back slightly.

“That isn't the same as trusting me.””

The words hurt her.

I could see it in her face.

But Tyler didn't raise his voice or insult her. He simply looked exhausted.

“I understand why you're frightened,” he said.

“But I need you to remember that I didn't create this situation.””

Elena nodded.

“You're right.””

She took his hands.

“I'm sorry.””

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he pulled her into an embrace.

Across the church, Robert was speaking quietly with a man in a gray suit.

The man handed him a slim folder.

Robert opened it, glanced at the contents, and immediately closed it again.

Stephen noticed.

“Who is that?””

I followed his gaze.

“I don't know.””

Stephen's face changed.

“I do.””

“Who?””

“Martin Cole. He used to handle certain transactions for the Hayes estate.””

Michael turned toward him.

“Was he an attorney?””

“No. He was a financial consultant. Margaret dismissed him after she discovered discrepancies in his reports.””

“Do you know whether he had access to the estate accounts?””

“Yes. At one point, he handled correspondence with the bank.””

I watched Martin lean toward Robert.

Robert listened, then glanced at us.

His expression was no longer confident.

He looked cornered.

Martin walked away before Michael could approach him.

Stephen started after him, but Michael caught his arm.

“Don't confront him. We need to document what we've seen and preserve the evidence.””

Stephen stopped reluctantly.

Elena had noticed the exchange.

“Who was that man?””

“Someone connected to your grandfather's financial affairs,” Michael replied.

“Could he have been involved in the disputed transfers?””

“Possibly. We don't know yet.””

She looked toward the side entrance where Robert had disappeared.

“How many people have been lying to me?””

Nobody answered.

At that moment, Miriam came running down the aisle with her phone in her hand.

“Daniel!””

I turned.

“What happened?””

“The venue called. Someone tried to access the wedding's payment account again.””

Michael immediately approached her.

“Did they succeed?””

“No. The coordinator refused to authorize the change. But they said the caller claimed to be Elena and provided personal information.””

Elena stared at her mother.

“I didn't call anyone.””

“I know.””

Miriam showed us the message from the venue.

The caller had known Elena's date of birth, address, and the last four digits of her identification number.

Michael asked the coordinator to preserve the call recording and report the attempted unauthorized access through the appropriate channels.

Elena's hands began shaking again.

“He still has my information.””

“We'll take steps to secure your accounts,” Michael said.

“And we will not assume that Robert was the caller until the evidence identifies who made it.””

Tyler moved closer to Elena.

“We can postpone everything.””

She looked around the church.

The guests were whispering. The officiant was waiting. The wedding coordinator stood near the entrance, uncertain what to do.

Then Elena straightened.

“No.””

Tyler studied her.

“No?””

“I don't want Robert deciding whether I get married. I don't want a fake document deciding it. And I don't want fear making every decision for me.””

She took his hands.

“If the marriage record is invalid, and if we can verify that nothing prevents us from marrying, I still want to marry you.””

Tyler's eyes filled.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She glanced at Michael.

“Can we proceed if the officiant is satisfied and the legal requirements are met?””

Michael considered the question.

“The officiant must decide whether the marriage can lawfully proceed based on the verified documents. I won't pressure anyone to continue. But the anonymous allegation alone doesn't establish that Tyler is married.””

The officiant returned after speaking with the records office.

“We have received preliminary confirmation that the document's reference number is inconsistent with the official record system,” he said.

“I will need the written response for the file, but there is currently no verified evidence establishing that Tyler is already married.””

Elena closed her eyes.

The officiant continued.

“If you both wish to proceed, and all other requirements are satisfied, I am prepared to continue the ceremony.””

Tyler turned toward Elena.

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The guests began settling into their seats.

The organist resumed playing softly.

I stood beside my daughter at the entrance to the sanctuary.

She looked at me through her tears.

“Daddy, I'm sorry I ever made you feel like you weren't my father.””

I swallowed.

“Let's get you married.””

She laughed through her tears.

Then she took my arm.

The church doors opened.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

The whispering guests.

The disputed inheritance.

The false marriage record.

The man who had tried to turn her wedding into a negotiation.

There was only my daughter beside me, wearing the dress she had dreamed about for months.

I walked her down the aisle.

At the altar, Tyler took her hands and kissed her forehead.

“You look beautiful,” he whispered.

“So do you,” she replied, smiling through her tears.

The ceremony began.

And for several minutes, I allowed myself to believe that the day might still end with something good.

Then the church doors opened again.

A uniformed officer entered, followed by a woman carrying a document envelope.

The officer spoke quietly with Michael.

Michael listened, then turned toward Elena.

His expression had changed.

“What is it?”” she whispered.

He looked at the envelope.

“The police have received a formal complaint involving the Hayes estate.””

Elena's face went pale.

“Against Robert?””

Michael shook his head.

“Not against Robert.””

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“The complaint names you, Daniel.””
