Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Man She Chose

Nobody moved.

The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen. Somewhere outside, a car passed through the wet street, its tires hissing against the pavement.

I held the note between my fingers.

Two hundred and forty thousand dollars.

Elena stared at Robert as though she were waiting for him to tell her the message was a joke.

“Daddy?”” she repeated.

Robert cleared his throat.

“This is absurd.””

“Then explain it,” I said.

He reached for the paper.

I pulled it away.

“Not so fast.””

“Daniel, you're letting someone manipulate you.””

“Someone knew enough to put my name on an envelope, leave it inside my wedding folder, and write down a bank account number. That sounds rather specific.””

Robert's eyes narrowed.

“You've always had a problem with me.””

I gave a humorless laugh.

“You disappeared for twenty years. I think you've done an admirable job creating that problem yourself.””

Elena stepped between us.

“Stop it! Both of you!””

She turned to Robert.

“Tell me what this is about.””

He placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Sweetheart, I don't know. Your stepfather has spent years resenting the fact that I gave you life.””

I looked at him in disbelief.

“Is that what you tell her when we're alone?””

Robert ignored me.

“Some people can't stand the idea that a child might want her biological father back.””

Elena's chin trembled.

“Then why is your name connected to a loan in my identity?””

Robert's hand slipped from her shoulder.

For the first time, she seemed to notice.

I folded the note and placed it in my pocket.

“I'm going to make a call.””

Robert stepped toward me.

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“I'm calling a lawyer.””

“Over a piece of paper?””

“Over a piece of paper that accuses you of borrowing a quarter of a million dollars using my daughter's identity.””

He lowered his voice.

“Daniel, listen to me. You don't want to turn a family disagreement into a criminal investigation.””

That sentence changed the temperature of the room.

I looked at him carefully.

“Why would a family disagreement become a criminal investigation unless there's something criminal involved?””

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

Miriam had been standing near the dining room doorway, one hand pressed against her chest. Now she approached Elena and gently touched her arm.

“Sweetheart, come sit down.””

Elena shook her head.

“No. I want answers.””

“So do I,” Miriam said.

Her voice was quiet, but there was steel beneath it.

“Robert, you told us you had changed. You said you wanted to make up for the years you missed.””

“I do.””

“Then tell us about this loan.””

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“I need to speak to my attorney before I discuss private financial matters.””

Elena stared at him.

“Private financial matters?””

He looked at her.

“You're getting married tomorrow. You don't need this stress.””

“It's my identity!””

“I said I would handle it.””

“You haven't explained anything!””

Robert grabbed his jacket from the back of a chair.

“This conversation is going nowhere.””

He headed toward the hallway.

I followed him.

“Where are you going?””

“Home.””

“You just arrived.””

“And now I'm leaving.””

He reached for the front door.

I said his name.

“Robert.””

He paused without turning.

“If that loan is legitimate, why does the note say you used Elena's identity?””

His shoulders stiffened.

Then he looked back at me.

“Because somebody wants to destroy me.””

“Who?””

He didn't answer.

Instead, he opened the door and walked out into the rain.

Elena rushed after him.

“Daddy!””

He turned at the bottom of the porch steps.

“Go inside, sweetheart. I'll call you tomorrow.””

“Tomorrow? My wedding is tomorrow!””

“I know.””

“Please don't leave me like this.””

For a moment, Robert's expression softened.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen and answered before Elena could say anything else.

“What do you mean, they found it?”” he snapped.

He listened.

“No. Nobody was supposed to contact her.””

Elena froze.

Robert turned away from her.

“I said I'd take care of it. Give me until tomorrow.””

He ended the call and shoved the phone into his pocket.

When he looked back, Elena was staring at him.

“Who was that?””

“Nobody.””

“I heard you say somebody found something.””

“You misunderstood.””

“What does that mean?””

Robert walked toward his car.

“Go inside, Elena.””

She stood in the rain, her ivory robe darkening at the shoulders.

“Daddy, please!””

He opened the driver's door.

Then he said something that made my daughter stop chasing him.

“If you love me, you'll trust me.””

He climbed into the car and drove away.

Elena remained on the pavement long after his taillights disappeared.

When she finally came inside, she looked smaller than she had ten minutes earlier.

Miriam wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

“Come sit down, sweetheart.””

Elena let herself be guided to the sofa.

I remained by the dining table, staring at the note.

I wanted to comfort her.

I wanted to tell her that whatever happened, we would work through it together.

But I couldn't ignore the way she'd looked at me when she called me her stepfather.

Twenty years had not disappeared because of one argument.

Yet something between us had broken, and neither of us knew how to reach across it.

Elena finally spoke.

“Do you think it's true?””

I looked at her.

“I think we need to find out.””

“What if he did something wrong?””

“Then he needs to explain it.””

She pressed her hands against her forehead.

“I don't understand. He told me he had a business. He said he owned property.””

“Did you ever see proof?””

“He showed me pictures.””

“Of what?””

“An office. A house. A car.””

“Did you visit any of them?””

She shook her head.

“He said he was busy. He was trying to get everything settled before the wedding.””

I leaned against the table.

“Elena, did you sign any financial documents for him?””

She looked up sharply.

“No.””

“Think carefully.””

“I said no.””

“Did he ask you to send him your Social Security number? Your driver's license? Anything like that?””

Her lips parted.

Then she looked toward the hallway.

“Three weeks ago, he asked for a picture of my driver's license.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to add me to one of his business accounts. He told me it would make things easier if we were going to start spending time together.””

“Did you send it?””

She nodded.

“And your Social Security number?””

“He already knew it.””

“Did you send it to him?””

Elena began twisting the edge of the blanket.

“I don't remember. Maybe I did.””

Miriam sat beside her.

“Oh, Elena.””

“He said he was my father! I thought he was trying to make things right.””

Nobody spoke for a moment.

Then Elena turned toward me.

“Why didn't you stop him?””

The question was so unexpected that I thought I had misunderstood.

“What?””

“You knew what he was like. You knew he abandoned us. Why didn't you stop him from coming back?””

I stared at her.

“Miriam and I told you to be careful. We asked questions. You said we were jealous.””

“Because you were!””

“Were we?””

She looked away.

I took a slow breath.

“I didn't stop you from seeing Robert because you were twenty-six years old, Elena. You had every right to know your biological father. I hoped he had grown into someone who deserved your trust.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“And now?””

“Now I hope we can discover the truth before he hurts you any more.””

She lowered her head.

For the first time that evening, she didn't argue.

I called my attorney, Michael Reeves, and explained what had happened. He instructed me to preserve the original note, avoid confronting Robert alone, and contact the relevant financial institutions through official channels if Elena suspected identity theft.

He also made one thing very clear.

“Daniel, don't assume that a suspicious note proves a crime. We need documents, not accusations.””

“I understand.””

“And don't destroy or cancel any existing contracts without reviewing your obligations. The vendors may still have enforceable agreements.””

“I've already told them I won't guarantee additional payments. I'll honor whatever obligations are legally mine.””

“Good. Send me the contracts in the morning.””

When I ended the call, Elena was watching me.

“You called a lawyer?””

“Yes.””

“Are you going to sue him?””

“I'm going to find out whether he's harmed you.””

She stared at her hands.

“Would you do that for me?””

I almost asked whether she genuinely needed to know.

Instead, I answered honestly.

“Of course I would.””

Her face crumpled.

She started crying, but I didn't rush to embrace her.

For twenty years, I had been the one who crossed the room first, the one who repaired every disagreement, the one who made sure she never had to sit alone with the consequences of a mistake.

Maybe tonight she needed to decide whether she wanted me beside her.

After several minutes, she whispered, “I don't know what to do.””

“Start by not signing anything else for Robert.””

She nodded.

“Tomorrow morning, we'll verify whether the loan exists.””

She looked at me.

“We?””

I met her eyes.

“If you want me to help.””

Her lips trembled.

“I do.””

It was the first thing she had said all evening that didn't come with a demand.

I nodded.

“Then we'll start there.””

At eleven forty-seven, my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

The message contained no greeting.

Mr. Carter, my name is Patricia Wells. I work for a private lending company. Your daughter's name has appeared in a serious financial matter involving Robert Hayes.

A second message arrived before I could respond.

Please don't let him take her to the church tomorrow.

I read it twice.

Then I showed it to Miriam and Elena.

Elena's face went bloodless.

“Who is Patricia Wells?””

“I don't know,” I said.

My phone rang.

The same unknown number.

I answered and put it on speaker.

A woman's voice came through, breathless and frightened.

“Mr. Carter? Thank God you answered.””

“This is Daniel Carter. Who are you?””

“My name is Patricia Wells. I work in compliance for a private lender. I've been trying to reach Elena for days.””

Elena grabbed my arm.

“What do you want from me?””

Patricia paused.

“Miss Carter, I need you to listen very carefully. The loan is real, but there's something about the application that doesn't make sense.””

“What doesn't make sense?”” I asked.

“The loan was approved using Elena's personal information. But the person who submitted the supporting documents claimed she had personally appeared before a notary.””

Elena shook her head violently.

“I never went to a notary!””

“I believe you,” Patricia said.

“That's why I contacted you.””

My mouth went dry.

“What is the amount?””

“Two hundred and forty thousand dollars.””

Elena made a small, broken sound.

Patricia continued.

“There's also a property listed as collateral. A property that, according to our preliminary records, belongs to a deceased person.””

Miriam pressed a hand to her lips.

I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

“Why are you warning us about the wedding?””

Patricia's voice dropped.

“Because the documents include an additional agreement. If certain conditions are met tomorrow, the lender intends to transfer control of the collateral to Robert Hayes.””

“What conditions?””

“I can't explain everything over the phone.””

“Then explain enough.””

She hesitated.

“Mr. Carter, Robert isn't simply borrowing money. He's trying to acquire something that he believes belongs to Elena.””

Elena leaned closer to the phone.

“What thing?””

Patricia inhaled sharply.

Then she said a sentence that made the entire room go silent.

“Your father's estate.””

Elena's face crumpled.

“My father is alive.””

“No,” Patricia replied.

“I'm talking about the estate of the man whose name appears on your birth certificate as your biological grandfather.””

Elena stared at the phone.

Robert had never told her that her grandfather had left an estate.

And Patricia had just revealed that somebody was trying to obtain it in her name.

Then the woman added one final detail.

“Miss Carter, the wedding isn't just a deadline. It's the reason Robert needs you to sign something tomorrow.””
