Chapter 6: The Truth They Buried

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because of the pain.

Not because of the fear.

Because of one sentence.

*Your parents knew something about your baby before you got pregnant.*

I replayed Chloe’s words over and over.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my mother’s face.

The anger.

The coldness.

The way she stood above me while I begged for help.

I had spent years believing my parents were just cruel.

Now I wondered if they were hiding something worse.

The next morning, Chloe came to our house.

Mark wanted her gone.

I understood why.

But I needed answers.

When she walked inside, she looked different.

Smaller.

Like the confidence she always carried had disappeared.

She sat across from me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“You’ve said that three times.””

“I know.””

“But you still haven’t explained.””

She nodded.

“I’ll tell you everything.””

Mark stood behind me with his arms crossed.

“Start talking.””

Chloe looked down.

“Before your third IVF attempt, Mom and Dad met with the clinic.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“They didn’t tell you.””

“Why would they meet with my doctor?””

Chloe swallowed.

“Because they were worried.””

“About what?””

She looked at me.

“About you having a baby.””

The words felt impossible.

My hands curled into fists.

“My parents didn’t want me pregnant?””

Chloe shook her head.

“It wasn’t that simple.””

“Then explain.””

She took a breath.

“Mom was afraid that after you had a child, you wouldn’t need her anymore.””

I stared at her.

That was the reason?

My mother had tried to control my life because she feared losing control?

“She ruined five years of my life because she wanted me dependent on her?””

Chloe’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, you do.””

She looked away.

And I knew.

She did.

Mark stepped forward.

“What did they tell the clinic?””

Chloe hesitated.

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a folder.

My name was written on it.

Sarah Williams.

My entire body went cold.

“Where did you get that?””

“Mom’s office.””

I opened it.

Inside were medical documents.

Emails.

Notes.

My hands trembled as I read.

The first page was from the fertility clinic.

A consultation request.

From my parents.

Not from me.

Not from Mark.

From them.

The date was two weeks before our final IVF transfer.

I looked at Chloe.

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because they tried to convince the doctor not to let you continue.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

“They said you weren’t emotionally stable.””

The same words.

The same lie.

The lie they were using now.

My mother had been building this story for years.

A story where I was fragile.

Unreliable.

Unable to make decisions.

I turned the page.

There was another document.

A handwritten note.

My mother’s handwriting.

I recognized it instantly.

It said:

*If Sarah has a child, she will leave us completely. We need to stop this before it happens.*

My vision blurred.

I couldn’t speak.

Mark took the paper from me.

His face changed as he read.

“She tried to stop your pregnancy?””

I nodded.

“No.””

My voice was barely audible.

“She tried to stop my life.””

Chloe began crying.

“I didn’t know how far they would go.””

I looked at her.

“But you knew they were trying.””

She wiped her face.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked broken.

“Because I was jealous.””

The honesty shocked me.

She continued.

“You always think I got everything.””

I said nothing.

“But the truth is, Mom and Dad made me feel like I was the only person who mattered. And I liked it.””

Her voice cracked.

“I liked being the favorite.””

The room was silent.

Then she whispered:

“Until I saw what they did to you.””

I looked at the papers.

At the evidence.

At the proof that this wasn’t just one horrible night.

This had been building for years.

My parents weren’t just angry because I refused to move.

They were angry because I was finally becoming independent.

I was building a family they couldn’t control.

My phone suddenly rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Sarah, we found something.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“We checked the original security footage again.””

“What do you mean original?””

“There was a missing section.””

I looked at Mark.

“Missing?””

“Yes.””

The detective’s voice became serious.

“Someone attempted to delete part of the recording.””

I stood frozen.

“Can you recover it?””

A pause.

Then:

“We already did.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What does it show?””

Detective Harris was quiet for a moment.

Then he said:

“Sarah, you need to come down here.””

“Why?””

“Because before your father touched you…”

My breathing stopped.

“There was someone else standing behind him.””

I looked at Mark.

My voice barely came out.

“Who?””

Detective Harris answered:

“It was your husband’s mother.””

I froze.

“My mother-in-law?””

“Yes.””

The silence that followed felt unbearable.

Because suddenly, the question was no longer why my parents wanted to destroy me.

The question was much worse.

Why was Mark’s family involved too?
