Chapter 5: The Secret Witness

I stared at the photograph until the image blurred.

My hands went numb.

“Your father wasn’t the only one.””

The words felt heavier than the picture itself.

Mark turned the photo over again.

Nothing else.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just that sentence.

“Who sent this?”” I whispered.

Mark didn’t answer.

Because we both knew the terrifying possibility.

Someone had been there.

Someone had seen everything.

Someone had watched my father pull me.

Someone had watched my mother walk away.

And they had stayed silent.

“I don’t like this,” Mark said.

Neither did I.

The house suddenly felt different.

Every shadow.

Every sound.

Every movement outside the window.

I looked toward the front door.

“Do you think someone was here?””

Mark immediately checked the locks.

“They would have had to come inside.””

I picked up the photo again.

The angle was strange.

It looked like it was taken from the hallway near the dining room.

A place where guests had been standing.

A place where anyone could have seen.

“Mark…”

He looked at me.

“What?””

“This wasn’t taken by a stranger.””

His expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because they were inside the house.””

For several minutes, we said nothing.

Then Mark grabbed his phone.

“I’m calling the police.””

I reached for his arm.

“Wait.””

He looked at me.

“Sarah.””

“I want to know who sent it.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent this waited.””

My voice became quieter.

“They watched me almost lose my baby, and they waited until now.””

Mark understood.

This wasn’t just about evidence.

It was about why.

The police arrived the next morning.

The officer assigned to our case was Detective Harris.

He was older, with tired eyes and a calm voice.

He studied the photograph carefully.

“Where did you receive this?””

“Our house.””

“Any idea who sent it?””

“No.””

He looked at the picture again.

“This appears to have been taken from inside the property.””

Mark nodded.

“That’s what we thought.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Mrs. Williams, I need to ask you something.””

I waited.

“Did anyone at the party have a reason to harm you?””

The question hurt.

Because I knew the answer was complicated.

“My father hurt me.””

He wrote something down.

“But did anyone else?””

I thought about Chloe.

My mother.

My relatives.

Everyone who had watched.

“I don’t know.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“That’s okay.””

He placed the photo in an evidence bag.

“We’ll investigate.””

After he left, I sat at the kitchen table.

The same place where I had once planned baby names with Mark.

Now I was sitting there wondering which members of my own family I could trust.

A few hours later, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

Mark noticed.

“Don’t answer.””

But something inside me told me I needed to.

I picked up.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a shaky voice spoke.

“Sarah?””

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

“Who is this?””

The person took a breath.

“It’s Chloe.””

I froze.

My sister.

“What do you want?””

Her voice cracked.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

I stood up.

Mark watched me carefully.

“Why now?””

“Because I saw what Mom and Dad are doing.””

I said nothing.

Chloe continued.

“They’re planning to say you pushed yourself.””

My stomach twisted.

“What?””

“They’re telling people you were upset because everyone was celebrating me.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another lie.

Another version where I was the villain.

“Why are you telling me this?””

The silence on the other end lasted too long.

“Because I know something.””

I waited.

“What?””

Her voice dropped.

“Dad didn’t just lose his temper.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What are you saying?””

“He knew you were near the stairs.””

A chill moved through my body.

“No.””

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You’re saying he did it on purpose?””

“I don’t know.””

“But?””

Chloe whispered:

“But Mom told him earlier that night that if you refused to give me the sofa, he needed to make sure you learned your lesson.””

The room spun.

I grabbed the counter.

Mark immediately moved toward me.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t speak.

Chloe continued.

“I’m sorry.””

For the first time in years, I heard something real in her voice.

Regret.

“Why didn’t you tell me before?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of them?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

My little sister was admitting she was afraid of our parents.

The same people who were supposed to protect us.

“Chloe…”

“I have more to tell you.””

I waited.

“There’s a reason Mom wants everyone to believe you’re unstable.””

My heart started pounding.

“What reason?””

“She’s hiding something.””

“What?””

Another silence.

Then Chloe whispered:

“Something about your IVF.””

I felt the world tilt.

“What does my IVF have to do with this?””

Her answer came softly.

May you like

And it changed everything.

“Sarah… your parents knew something about your baby before you got pregnant.””
