Chapter 8: The Gala Where the Truth Finally Walked In

The Carter Legacy Fashion Gala was held at the Metropolitan Grand Ballroom.

More than six hundred guests filled the enormous venue.

There were celebrities, fashion editors, international buyers, investors, and television reporters.

A massive screen displayed the Carter Fashion House logo.

Below it, another message appeared.

*THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN COUTURE.*

I stood backstage with Daniel, Edward, and my grandmother.

My recreated gown hung behind me.

The pearl-white silk shimmered beneath the work lights.

The ruby roses were attached.

The sculpted shoulders were complete.

And the cathedral train fell in a graceful line behind the mannequin.

It wasn't perfect.

I had worked through the night.

There were tiny imperfections in the embroidery, and one crystal near the waist sat slightly crooked.

But I loved it.

Because every stitch represented something they couldn't take away.

My grandmother approached.

"May I?""

I stepped aside.

She touched one of the roses.

"Your mother would have been so proud.""

I smiled.

"Do you think it looks like hers?""

She looked at me.

"No, darling.""

My heart sank.

Then she continued.

"It looks like yours.""

Before I could respond, a stage assistant hurried toward us.

"Miss Carter? Mr. Carter wants to see you.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"Why?""

The assistant looked nervous.

"He says it's urgent.""

Edward shook his head.

"Don't go alone.""

I nodded.

We walked toward the private dressing room.

Richard was waiting inside.

He wore a black tuxedo with a white pocket square.

Vanessa stood beside him, dressed in silver.

Brielle was wearing the stolen Rose of Evelyn gown.

My father's smile disappeared when he saw my grandmother.

"Mother.""

Margaret looked at him coldly.

"Richard.""

He turned toward me.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No.""

His eyes narrowed.

"This concerns the family.""

"Then everyone can hear.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You're making a spectacle of yourself.""

I looked at her.

"That's what the gala is for, isn't it?""

Brielle laughed.

"You're still wearing that old jacket? Seriously?""

I glanced at her gown.

"You're still wearing my design?""

Her smile faded.

Richard stepped forward.

"Listen carefully, Nia. The board has no intention of allowing you to interfere with the company tonight.""

"Then why did they invite me?""

"Because I insisted.""

I frowned.

He continued.

"I want you to sign a settlement agreement. You receive a financial payment, and in exchange, you surrender all claims to the trust and Roseline International.""

Daniel immediately stepped between us.

"She won't sign anything without legal review.""

Richard pulled a document from his jacket.

"Ten million dollars.""

I stared at him.

For a second, I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Ten million dollars.

It was more money than I had ever imagined possessing.

But the offer made me feel sick.

"You want me to sell Mom's company?""

"I want to end this ridiculous dispute.""

"You stole her designs.""

"I built this business.""

"You stole her name.""

Richard's voice rose.

"Do you have any idea what I sacrificed?""

My grandmother stepped forward.

"Your wife sacrificed her life building that company.""

Richard turned.

"Stay out of this.""

Margaret looked at him.

"You have spent nineteen years trying to erase Evelyn. Tonight, you will finally answer for it.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Richard, the guests are waiting.""

He looked at me.

"Ten million. That's my final offer.""

I shook my head.

"Keep it.""

His face hardened.

"Then don't complain about what happens next.""

He walked out.

Brielle followed, but before leaving, she leaned close.

"Enjoy the last few minutes of attention. After tonight, nobody will remember you.""

I looked at her.

"That's what I'm counting on.""

At seven thirty, the lights dimmed.

The host walked onto the stage.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Carter Legacy Fashion Gala.""

Applause filled the ballroom.

The first models appeared.

Beautiful gowns moved across the runway beneath golden spotlights.

The audience applauded.

Photographers flashed their cameras.

Then the host announced Brielle.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the future of Carter Fashion House, Miss Brielle Carter!""

The crowd erupted.

Brielle stepped onto the runway.

Her smile was radiant.

She moved gracefully, allowing the ruby-red gown to catch the light.

The enormous screen behind her displayed the collection's title.

*THE ROSE LEGACY — CREATED BY BRIELLE CARTER.*

I felt my stomach tighten.

There it was.

My mother's work.

Presented as Brielle's greatest achievement.

The host continued.

"This collection represents the next generation of American couture. It is a tribute to the creativity and vision of the Carter family.""

My grandmother gripped her cane.

Edward looked at Daniel.

Daniel nodded.

It was time.

I stepped toward the backstage entrance.

But before I could move, Richard appeared beside me.

"Don't.""

I turned.

"You can't stop me.""

He lowered his voice.

"Listen to me. If you walk out there, I will make sure you never work in fashion again.""

I looked at him.

"You already tried.""

His jaw tightened.

Then he grabbed my arm.

"You're going to ruin everything.""

I pulled free.

"No, Dad. I'm going to stop you from ruining Mom's legacy.""

I walked onto the runway.

The lights hit my face.

For one second, the entire ballroom seemed to freeze.

Then whispers spread through the audience.

The host stopped speaking.

Brielle turned.

Her smile disappeared.

"What is she doing here?""

I walked toward the center of the runway.

The host looked toward Richard.

He shook his head.

But I was already standing beneath the enormous screen.

I took the microphone.

"Good evening.""

A few people applauded uncertainly.

"My name is Nia Carter. I'm Evelyn Carter's daughter.""

The audience became quiet.

I looked toward the screen.

"For the past eight years, you've been told that my mother was simply the woman who inspired this fashion house.""

I paused.

"That isn't true.""

Richard began walking toward me.

"Nia, give me the microphone.""

I continued.

"My mother founded the original Carter Atelier. She designed the collections that built this company. And the dress Brielle is wearing tonight was designed by Evelyn Carter twenty years ago.""

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Brielle grabbed the microphone.

"She's lying!""

I looked at her.

"Then explain why the original sketch is dated twenty years before you were born.""

The audience gasped.

I turned toward the technical booth.

Daniel gave the signal.

The enormous screen changed.

My mother's original sketch appeared.

Beside it was Brielle's design registration.

The dates were clearly visible.

Then a second image appeared.

The original ownership agreement.

The audience began whispering louder.

Richard rushed onto the runway.

"Turn that screen off!""

But the next image appeared before anyone could react.

It was a photograph of my mother holding the original Rose of Evelyn gown.

Beneath it was a caption.

*ORIGINAL DESIGNER: EVELYN CARTER.*

I looked at Brielle.

"Would you like to explain why you registered her work under your name?""

Brielle's face had gone pale.

Vanessa hurried toward the stage.

"She's being manipulated! This is a family dispute!""

My grandmother stood.

"No, Vanessa.""

She walked toward the runway.

"This is a matter of truth.""

The audience parted.

Margaret climbed the stage steps.

She looked at the cameras.

"My name is Margaret Whitmore. I financed Evelyn Carter's original fashion company. I can confirm that the designs displayed tonight belong to my daughter and her estate.""

Richard stared at her.

"Mother, don't.""

She turned toward him.

"You have already taken enough from this family.""

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A tall man entered carrying a leather briefcase.

Thomas Carter.

My uncle.

He walked directly toward the stage.

Richard's expression changed.

"Thomas?""

Thomas placed the briefcase on the table.

"Hello, brother.""

Richard looked toward the security guards.

"Remove him.""

Thomas opened the case.

"Before you do that, perhaps everyone should hear the recording.""

The host looked confused.

Daniel took the microphone.

"We have submitted the original ownership records to the board. We also have a recording made by Evelyn Carter three days before her death.""

Richard's face turned completely white.

I looked at him.

"What recording?""

Thomas pressed a button.

A familiar voice filled the ballroom.

My mother's voice.

"Richard, I know what you've done.""

Then my father's voice answered.

"You're confused, Evelyn.""

"No. I've seen the transfers. I've seen the signatures. I know you moved the money.""

A pause.

Then my father's voice became colder.

"You should have signed the papers when I asked.""

My mother replied.

"I will never give you control of everything I built.""

The recording crackled.

Then came a sentence that made my entire body go cold.

"Then perhaps Nia will never inherit it.""

The ballroom fell silent.

My mother's voice answered.

"If you hurt my daughter, Richard, I will make sure the truth survives you.""

The recording stopped.

I looked at my father.

He stood motionless.

Then Thomas opened another folder.

"And this isn't the only evidence.""

He removed a document.

"This is the original medical authorization Richard used to gain control of Evelyn's business accounts after her death.""

Daniel examined it.

Then he looked at Richard.

"The signature is forged.""

The room erupted.

Reporters rushed forward.

Cameras flashed.

Brielle began crying.

Vanessa grabbed Richard's sleeve.

But my father wasn't looking at them.

He was looking at me.

And for the first time, I saw something in his eyes I had never seen before.

Fear.

Then a security guard hurried toward the stage and whispered something into the host's ear.

The host looked toward Richard.

Then toward the audience.

His voice trembled.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have just received an urgent notification from the Carter Fashion House board.""

The ballroom went silent again.

"The board has voted to suspend Richard Carter's executive authority pending a full investigation.""

I closed my eyes.

It was happening.

But the host wasn't finished.

He looked down at the notification.

"And there is one additional announcement.""

He swallowed.

"Effective immediately, the board recognizes Nia Evelyn Carter as the controlling beneficiary of the original Carter estate.""

The applause began slowly.

Then it grew.

But before I could turn toward my grandmother, my father stepped toward me.

He looked at the crowd.

Then he shouted:

"YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO YOUR MOTHER REALLY WAS!""

And he pointed directly at the woman standing beside me.

May you like

My grandmother.

"Ask Margaret what happened the night Evelyn died!""
