Chapter 7: The Woman My Father Tried to Erase
At 8:12 the next morning, my grandmother called me.
I had never heard her voice before.
Yet the moment she said my name, I recognized something familiar.
"Nia?""
"Yes.""
"My darling girl.""
Her voice broke.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, "I'm sorry it took me nineteen years.""
I sat on the edge of the hotel bed.
"Why did Dad tell me you were dead?""
There was a long silence.
"Because I knew what he had done to your mother. And because I refused to help him hide it.""
Edward sat across from me, his hands folded over his walking cane.
My grandmother continued.
"Your mother was the daughter I was always proudest of. She was brilliant, stubborn, and fearless. When Richard began stealing her designs, I begged her to leave him.""
"Why didn't she?""
"Because she loved you. She believed that if she left, Richard would use his money and influence to take you away.""
I looked down.
"She never told me any of this.""
"She was trying to protect your childhood.""
I swallowed.
"Did you help her create Roseline International?""
"Yes. I was the original financial guarantor. Evelyn designed the collections. I provided the investment, and Edward helped establish the company.""
I looked at my grandfather.
He nodded.
My grandmother continued.
"Richard discovered that the company was worth far more than he had imagined. He wanted control of everything. When I refused to sign over my shares, he threatened to destroy Evelyn's reputation.""
"Did he threaten you, too?""
"He did something worse.""
Her voice became quieter.
"He convinced my son that I was trying to steal his inheritance. Richard's younger brother, Thomas, believed him. Thomas and I stopped speaking. Richard used that division to isolate everyone who could challenge him.""
I closed my eyes.
There had been another son in the family.
Another person my father had erased from our history.
"Where is Uncle Thomas now?""
"London. He has been searching for evidence of Richard's financial activities.""
Edward leaned forward.
"Margaret, tell her about the original shareholders' agreement.""
My grandmother sighed.
"Richard believes he owns the majority of Carter Fashion House. But he never legally acquired Evelyn's controlling shares. More importantly, Roseline International owns the original designs and the licensing rights.""
I glanced at Daniel.
He was already taking notes.
"Grandmother," I said, "what happens if I activate everything?""
"You become the controlling beneficiary of your mother's estate.""
"And Dad?""
"He loses the authority he has abused for years.""
I looked at the floor.
I imagined Richard standing in his office, surrounded by expensive furniture and framed magazine covers, believing he had finally gotten rid of me.
Then I remembered his expression when he saw the trust notice.
He had known.
He had always known.
"Why are you coming to the gala?"" I asked.
"Because your mother asked me to make one final appearance if Richard ever tried to claim her legacy as his own.""
My throat tightened.
"She planned this?""
"She hoped it would never be necessary.""
My grandmother paused.
"There's something else, Nia. I have something that belongs to you. Something your mother wanted you to receive when you were ready.""
"What is it?""
"A key.""
I frowned.
"To what?""
"To the original Roseline headquarters.""
Edward slowly stood.
I looked at him.
"You know about this?""
He nodded.
"Your mother kept one final collection there. She never released it.""
My grandmother continued.
"Tonight, I will bring you the key. But before that, I need you to promise me something.""
"What?""
"Do not let Richard provoke you into losing control. He will try to make you look unstable. He will use your age against you. He will tell everyone you're confused, greedy, or manipulated.""
I looked at the unfinished gown hanging beside the window.
"I won't.""
"Good. Your mother didn't raise a girl who needed to scream to be heard.""
The call ended.
For several minutes, I sat silently.
Then Daniel closed his laptop.
"We need to prepare.""
I nodded.
"How?""
"First, the legal team will submit the original ownership documents to the board. Second, Edward will verify the trust. Third, your grandmother will confirm the original financing arrangements.""
"And the gala?""
Daniel looked at the dress.
"That's where you take back the design.""
At ten thirty, the emergency board meeting began.
I was not allowed inside initially.
Daniel entered with Edward and the legal team while I waited in a small conference room.
Through the glass walls, I could see Richard sitting at the head of the table.
Vanessa was beside him.
Brielle sat opposite them, scrolling through her phone.
When Daniel placed the documents on the table, Richard immediately stood.
"What is this?""
Daniel remained calm.
"The original ownership agreement.""
Richard laughed.
"That's an obsolete document.""
"Then you'll have no difficulty explaining why your signature appears on the associated transfer restrictions.""
Richard grabbed the paper.
His expression tightened.
One board member, a silver-haired woman named Helen Crawford, leaned forward.
"Richard, is this your signature?""
He didn't answer.
"Richard?""
He finally looked up.
"This is a private family dispute. It has no place in a corporate meeting.""
Helen removed her glasses.
"Forty-two million dollars in questionable transfers is not a family dispute.""
Vanessa shifted in her chair.
Brielle stopped scrolling.
Richard pointed at Daniel.
"These documents were obtained illegally.""
Edward stood.
"I personally preserved the originals.""
Richard turned toward him.
"You're a disgruntled former investor.""
"I'm Evelyn's father.""
"And you were never part of this company's management.""
Edward placed his cane against the table.
"No. I was the person who funded the woman who created it.""
The room fell silent.
Helen examined the original ownership agreement.
Then she turned to the legal adviser.
"Can we verify this?""
"Yes. We will need the original registry records, but the documentation appears consistent.""
Richard pushed his chair backward.
"This meeting is over.""
Helen shook her head.
"Actually, Richard, we're just getting started.""
At noon, I received a message from Brielle.
*Brielle:* You think a few old documents make you important?
I didn't respond.
Another message arrived.
*Brielle:* Dad says the board meeting went nowhere. You're still nobody.
I put the phone down.
Then my assistant, a young woman named Claire whom Daniel had hired to help with the gala preparation, entered carrying a garment bag.
"Miss Carter?""
"Yes?""
"This just arrived.""
I unzipped it.
Inside was my mother's original ruby-red evening jacket.
The one she had worn in the photograph with Edward.
A handwritten note was attached.
Wear something that belongs to you.
I smiled.
For the first time since leaving the mansion, I felt my mother's presence without feeling the weight of losing her.
I put the jacket on.
It fit almost perfectly.
Claire looked at me.
"You look beautiful.""
I glanced at the mirror.
The girl staring back at me wasn't wearing expensive jewelry.
She wasn't wearing designer shoes.
But she stood straight.
And she no longer looked afraid.
At five thirty, my grandmother arrived at the hotel.
She was eighty years old, elegant, and walking with the help of a small wooden cane.
The moment she saw me, she stopped.
"Oh, Evelyn.""
I approached her.
"I'm Nia.""
She touched my cheek.
"I know, sweetheart.""
Then she embraced me.
Her perfume reminded me of my mother's old wardrobe.
I held her tightly.
For nineteen years, I had believed there was nobody left who remembered my mother the way I did.
Now I had two people.
My grandmother opened her handbag and removed a small brass key.
"Your mother left this with me.""
I examined it.
There was a tiny rose engraved on the handle.
"What's behind the door?""
My grandmother looked toward Edward.
"Everything Richard never wanted you to see.""
Daniel checked his watch.
"We should leave. The gala begins in ninety minutes.""
My grandmother took my hand.
"One more thing, darling.""
She leaned closer.
"Your father doesn't know that Thomas is coming tonight.""
I frowned.
"Uncle Thomas?""
She nodded.
"And he isn't coming alone.""
Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Nia Carter?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Thomas Carter. I'm your uncle.""
I looked at my grandmother.
She nodded.
Thomas continued.
"I've spent years investigating your father's company. I have records proving that he didn't just steal your mother's designs.""
I gripped the phone.
"What else did he do?""
Thomas lowered his voice.
"He forged your mother's final medical authorization to gain control of her business accounts.""
My grandmother closed her eyes.
May you like
Then Thomas said the words that made the room go silent.
"And I have the original recording of your mother confronting him three days before she died.""
