Chapter 4: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone
For three seconds, I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
I couldn’t even remember how to breathe.
The phone remained pressed against my ear, but the voice on the other end had disappeared.
Only silence remained.
A silence so heavy it felt like the entire world was waiting for my reaction.
Then I whispered:
“Charlotte?””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Are you still there?””
A faint breath came through the speaker.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
But it was real.
Charlotte Hayes was alive.
The woman everyone talked about like she was a ghost.
The woman whose photographs had appeared in my bridal suite.
The woman Ethan had once planned to marry.
The woman who supposedly disappeared from his life.
She was alive.
And somehow, she had my father’s number.
I sat down slowly on the edge of the chair.
“Where are you?””
There was a pause.
“Somewhere safe.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“I know.””
Her voice was quiet.
Tired.
Not the voice of someone trying to create drama.
The voice of someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.
“Claire, I know this is impossible to understand.””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“You think?””
“I’m sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
“I don’t need an apology. I need answers.””
“I know.””
“Then start.””
The line stayed silent.
I almost thought she had hung up.
Then she said:
“Your father saved my life.””
My eyes opened.
“What?””
“Your father.””
I stood.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Everyone says he destroyed your life.””
Charlotte was quiet.
Then she said:
“Everyone is wrong.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Because suddenly, I didn’t know who to believe.
The Mercers had one story.
My father had another.
And Charlotte, the person at the center of everything, had a third.
“Tell me what happened.””
She exhaled slowly.
“I was twenty-six when I met Ethan.””
I listened.
“He was kind. Different from his family. He hated the pressure of being a Mercer. He wanted a normal life.””
A painful smile crossed my face.
That sounded like the Ethan I knew.
The man who hated formal dinners.
The man who secretly donated books to the community library.
The man who told me he wanted a small house someday, somewhere quiet.
Not a mansion.
Not an empire.
Just a home.
“We were happy,” Charlotte continued.
“Then what happened?””
Her voice changed.
“He found out something about his family.””
“What?””
“I don’t know everything.””
I frowned.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
There was a pause.
“But I know it involved your father.””
I sat back down.
“Why?””
“Because Michael Bennett was investigating the Mercers.””
My father.
Investigating them.
“Investigating what?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re telling me everyone’s life fell apart and nobody knows why?””
Charlotte sighed.
“Some people know.””
“Who?””
“Vivian.””
My stomach tightened.
Of course.
Vivian.
The woman who had appeared at my wedding with an envelope full of secrets.
The woman who had spent years making sure I knew I wasn’t welcome.
“What did she do?””
Charlotte didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
“What did she do, Charlotte?””
“She threatened me.””
The room felt colder.
“When?””
“Before I disappeared.””
My fingers went numb.
“You disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Ethan told me you left.””
“I know.””
“And you didn’t?””
“No.””
The answer was so simple.
So certain.
My entire understanding of Ethan shifted.
“He lied.””
Charlotte didn’t respond.
“Didn’t he?””
“I don’t know what Ethan was told.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means Ethan believed what his family wanted him to believe.””
I stood and started pacing.
“So he thought you abandoned him?””
“Yes.””
“And you were actually…”
“Trying to survive.””
My heart sank.
“What happened to your daughter?””
Charlotte’s breathing changed.
“She was with me.””
I froze.
“Ethan knew?””
“No.””
“He thought—”
“He thought I left with someone else.””
The words felt impossible.
“He thought his own daughter was gone?””
“Yes.””
I looked down at my wedding dress.
The pearls.
The lace.
The memory of my mother.
Everything that morning had felt like a beginning.
Now it felt like I had walked into a story that started years before me.
“Why didn’t you contact him?””
Charlotte was silent.
Then:
“Because Vivian made sure I couldn’t.””
“How?””
“She took everything.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“She took your money?””
“My identity.””
The room went quiet.
“What?””
“She had connections. Lawyers. People who could make problems disappear.””
I swallowed.
“Charlotte…”
“She told me if I ever tried to contact Ethan, she would make sure I lost my daughter.””
My hand covered my mouth.
“And Ethan?””
“I loved him.””
Her voice cracked.
“But I loved my child more.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Why call me now?””
Another pause.
“Because Vivian made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“She showed you those pictures.””
I frowned.
“How would that be a mistake?””
“Because she wanted to hurt you.””
“That sounds exactly like Vivian.””
“Yes.””
Charlotte’s voice became urgent.
“But she doesn’t understand what those pictures prove.””
“What do they prove?””
“That Ethan never knew the truth.””
I stared at the wall.
“What truth?””
“That he wasn’t the person who abandoned us.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
“You will.””
“Charlotte, I need you to stop speaking in riddles.””
She was quiet.
Then she said:
“Claire, ask Ethan about the night of the fire.””
A chill moved through me.
“The fire?””
“Yes.””
“What fire?””
Charlotte didn’t answer.
And suddenly I remembered.
Three years ago.
When Ethan and I first met.
He had a scar on his left hand.
I had asked him about it once.
He had smiled and said:
“Old accident.””
Nothing more.
I had never pushed.
Because everyone had things they didn’t want to discuss.
But now…
“Charlotte.””
“Yes?””
“What happened that night?””
Her voice became a whisper.
“Your father tried to expose Vivian.””
My heart raced.
“And?””
“And Vivian tried to stop him.””
I gripped the phone.
“How?””
The answer came softly.
“She burned the evidence.””
I stared ahead.
“What evidence?””
“The evidence that would prove what she did.””
My mind spun.
There were too many pieces.
Too many missing parts.
“My father never told me any of this.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because he was protecting you.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””
Charlotte didn’t argue.
Because she knew.
That was the problem.
Everyone had made decisions for me.
Everyone had hidden things.
Everyone had decided what I could handle.
And now I was standing in the middle of their secrets.
Wearing a wedding dress.
Holding a phone.
Trying to figure out if my entire life had been built on lies.
“Where is my father?””
I asked.
Charlotte hesitated.
“Claire…”
“Where is he?””
“He’s here.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He came to the hotel.””
I looked toward the ballroom.
“He’s here?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I called him.””
“You called my father?””
“Yes.””
“Why would you do that?””
“Because I knew Vivian would come after you.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Charlotte didn’t answer.
Then I heard something.
A door opening.
A voice in the background.
Male.
Angry.
“Claire?””
I froze.
That voice.
My father.
But he wasn’t calling my name like he usually did.
He sounded afraid.
I turned toward the sitting room entrance.
The door slowly opened.
My father stood there.
His face was pale.
His eyes moved from me to the phone in my hand.
Then he whispered:
“She told you.””
I couldn’t speak.
Because behind him stood another person.
Ethan.
And the expression on his face told me he had heard enough.
He looked at my father.
Then at me.
Then he said the one sentence I never expected to hear on my wedding night.
“Claire…”
His voice broke.
“Your father didn’t destroy my family.””
A pause.
“He saved it.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Ethan stepped into the room.
And for the first time since I met him, he looked completely defeated.
“I spent three years hating the wrong person.””
My father closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
Ethan looked at me.
“Claire, there is something you need to know.””
The room went silent.
“Charlotte wasn’t my secret.””
I waited.
May you like
“Vivian was.””
And before I could ask what he meant, the lights in the hotel suddenly went out.
