Chapter 10: The Truth We Chose
For the first time in my life, I looked at my father and wondered if I knew him at all.
Not because I believed Vivian.
Not completely.
After everything I had learned, I knew one thing better than anyone:
Vivian Mercer built lies the way other people built houses.
Brick by brick.
Carefully.
Patiently.
Beautiful on the outside.
Rotten underneath.
But the problem was that she never lied with nothing.
Every lie she told had a piece of truth hidden inside it.
And that was what terrified me.
Because if even one part of what she said was true…
Then my entire life was built on secrets.
My father looked away.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t immediately say Vivian was lying.
And somehow, that scared me more than anything.
“Dad.””
My voice barely worked.
“Tell me.””
He closed his eyes.
The old Mercer house stood behind us like a witness.
A place where everyone had hidden something.
A place where every secret eventually came back.
“I didn’t kill Daniel.””
The first thing he said.
Not I didn’t know him.
Not Vivian is lying.
Not you misunderstood.
Just that.
I didn’t kill Daniel.
I swallowed.
“Then why did she say that?””
My father looked at the ground.
“Because she knows what happened that night.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“What night?””
My father looked at him.
“The night your father died.””
The words hung between them.
Ethan’s face was pale.
“You said it was an accident.””
“I thought it was.””
“You thought?””
My father nodded slowly.
“Because that’s what everyone was told.””
He looked toward the house.
“But your father knew something.””
“What?””
“That Vivian was stealing from the foundation.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“So he was trying to expose her?””
“Yes.””
“And my mother?””
My father looked at him.
“She was trying to stop him.””
The silence that followed felt endless.
Ethan looked like he wanted to deny it.
But he couldn’t.
Because deep down, he already knew.
“What happened that night?””
My father took a breath.
Then he finally told us.
“Daniel called me.””
I froze.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew I had copies of the evidence.””
My father continued.
“He wanted to meet somewhere private.””
“Where?””
“The old Mercer house.””
My eyes moved to the building behind us.
“This house?””
“Yes.””
Ethan stared.
“You came here.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
My father’s expression changed.
Pain.
Regret.
A memory he had spent years trying to bury.
“When I arrived, Daniel was already there.””
He looked at Ethan.
“And so was Vivian.””
Ethan whispered:
“My mother was there?””
“Yes.””
“What were they doing?””
My father looked down.
“Arguing.””
“About what?””
“The evidence.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“And then?””
My father’s voice became quieter.
“Daniel told Vivian he was going public.””
Ethan looked away.
“Of course he did.””
“Vivian begged him not to.””
My father shook his head.
“She said she would lose everything.””
“And Daniel?””
“He said he would rather lose everything than become like her.””
The words sounded exactly like something my mother would have respected.
“What happened next?””
My father was silent.
Then:
“The fire started.””
Ethan looked up.
“What?””
“There was a fire in the study.””
My father’s hands shook slightly.
“I tried to get Daniel out.””
“But he died.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
My father swallowed.
“Because I couldn’t reach him in time.””
Ethan stared.
“And Vivian?””
“She disappeared before the firefighters arrived.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
My father looked at him.
“Because when the police arrived, Vivian told them something different.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“She said Daniel and I had fought.””
“And?””
“She said I threatened him.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“She framed you.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
My father looked at me.
“Because she knew Daniel’s daughter was still alive.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You.””
The truth hit differently this time.
Not like a shock.
Like a wound finally being opened.
“Vivian knew I was Daniel’s daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she want Ethan to marry me?””
My father looked toward the house.
“Because she believed she could control both sides of the family.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She lost Daniel.””
A pause.
“She lost control of the foundation.””
Another pause.
“But she still had one thing.””
I already knew the answer.
“Ethan.””
My father nodded.
“She wanted Ethan to inherit everything.””
“And me?””
“She wanted you close.””
“Why?””
“Because you were the only person who could legally challenge her.””
The pieces connected.
The wedding.
The relationship.
The documents.
The plan.
Vivian didn’t want Ethan to marry me because she loved me.
She wanted me inside the family because she wanted to watch me.
Control me.
Use me.
But then something unexpected happened.
Ethan actually loved me.
And I loved him.
The one thing Vivian never planned for was that we would become something real.
A sound came from inside the house.
We all turned.
The front door was open.
It hadn’t been before.
Ethan moved immediately.
“Stay here.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Claire.””
“I’m done staying behind while everyone else decides what I deserve to know.””
For a moment, he just looked at me.
Then he nodded.
“Okay.””
We entered the house together.
The study door was open.
Inside, the room looked untouched.
Except for one thing.
A small recorder sitting on the desk.
My father stopped.
“I’ve never seen that before.””
Ethan picked it up.
There was one file.
Recorded today.
He pressed play.
Vivian’s voice filled the room.
“If you’re hearing this, then Claire knows.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“I always knew this moment would come.””
A pause.
“Claire, I know you hate me.””
I almost laughed.
“You have no idea.””
Vivian continued.
“But you need to understand something.””
The recording changed.
Her voice became softer.
Not kinder.
Just tired.
“I didn’t destroy your mother’s life because I hated her.””
Nobody moved.
“I destroyed it because she was going to destroy mine.””
My father clenched his fists.
“She found out everything.””
Vivian continued.
“She found out Daniel was not the only person hiding things.””
A pause.
Then:
“She found out Michael Bennett wasn’t innocent.””
My father closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
The recording continued.
“Michael loved Evelyn.””
My father looked up.
“But he also loved protecting his secrets.””
I felt my heart race.
“What secret?””
Vivian answered herself.
“Daniel didn’t die because of the fire.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Ethan whispered.
The recording continued.
“The fire was only meant to destroy the documents.””
A pause.
“Daniel was already dead before it started.””
My father looked horrified.
“No.””
Vivian’s voice continued.
“Michael knows the truth.””
I looked at my father.
He looked like he had stopped breathing.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad?””
Finally, he whispered:
“She’s lying.””
But he didn’t sound certain.
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Then my father walked to the desk.
Slowly.
Like every step hurt.
He opened the drawer.
Inside was a small box.
An old one.
He stared at it.
“I never wanted you to see this.””
My voice was barely there.
“What is it?””
He picked it up.
Then handed it to me.
Inside was a necklace.
A simple silver necklace.
My mother’s.
I recognized it immediately.
“She wore this the night she died.””
My fingers touched it.
“There’s something inside.””
I looked up.
“What?””
My father took the necklace.
The back opened.
Inside was a tiny piece of paper.
Folded.
Old.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
In my mother’s handwriting.
The handwriting I knew better than my own.
*Claire, if you are reading this, it means Michael finally told you the truth.*
I stopped.
My father looked away.
The note continued.
*But he did not tell you everything.*
My heart pounded.
I read the final line.
And everything changed.
*The man who killed Daniel Mercer was not Michael.*
A pause.
Then:
*It was the person you trusted most.*
I slowly looked up.
At Ethan.
At my father.
At the world I thought I understood.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Then a familiar voice whispered:
“Claire.””
I froze.
“Charlotte?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Listen to me.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“I found Vivian.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
Charlotte took a breath.
“She’s with someone.””
“With who?””
The answer came quietly.
“Your mother’s killer.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who?””
Charlotte whispered one name.
And when she said it…
I realized the truth had never been about who betrayed us.
It was about who had been protecting us all along.
Because the person Charlotte named…
May you like
Was the last person I ever expected.
*To be continued…*
