Chapter 6: The Envelope He Left Behind
I stared at the envelope on the ground for several seconds.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
It was as if the entire wedding venue was waiting for me to decide whether opening it would destroy whatever was left of my life.
Maybe it would.
But after everything I had learned that morning, I already knew something important.
The life I thought I had was gone.
The only question was how much of it had been a lie.
I bent down and picked up the envelope.
My name was written across the front in my father’s handwriting.
I knew that handwriting.
I had seen it on birthday cards.
On checks when I was younger.
On the notes he left me whenever he visited.
Seeing it now made my stomach turn.
“Ethan.””
Vanessa’s voice was quiet.
I looked at her.
For once, she didn’t seem like the woman who had controlled every room she entered.
She looked scared.
“Don’t open it here.””
I looked around.
The guests were still watching.
The photographers had lowered their cameras.
The wedding decorations that had cost thousands of dollars suddenly felt like they belonged to someone else’s life.
“Why?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because if it’s what I think it is, you won’t be able to pretend today never happened.””
I almost smiled.
“Vanessa, I think we passed that point hours ago.””
She looked down.
She knew I was right.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single folded piece of paper.
No explanation.
No apology.
Just a letter.
I unfolded it.
The first line made my chest tighten.
*Ethan, if you are reading this, then Lily found you before I could explain.*
My fingers went still.
He knew.
My father knew Lily was coming.
He knew everything was about to come out.
I continued reading.
*I know what you are thinking. You believe I betrayed you. You believe I hid the truth from you. But everything I did was to protect this family.*
My jaw tightened.
Protect.
That word again.
Everyone had used it.
Everyone had hidden behind it.
I kept reading.
*Rachel was not the woman you thought she was. She made decisions that put you and Nia in danger. I tried to fix what she started.*
My eyes narrowed.
The old anger returned.
Because even now, even in a letter written after disappearing, he was still blaming Rachel.
I looked at Lily.
“She’s lying.””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
“You don’t know that.””
“I knew Rachel.””
I looked back at the letter.
The next sentence stopped me.
*But there is one thing I never told you. Nia was never the only child Rachel was protecting.*
My heartbeat increased.
I turned the page.
There was more.
*Emma was real. She existed. Rachel believed someone in our family wanted her gone.*
My breath caught.
Someone in our family.
Not a stranger.
Not some random person.
Family.
The next words were written more heavily, like my father had pressed the pen harder.
*Rachel made a mistake when she trusted the wrong person.*
I folded the paper slightly.
“Who?””
I whispered the question.
But the letter didn’t answer.
Instead, it said:
*The person who caused all of this is still close to you.*
I looked up.
My eyes moved across the people standing around me.
Vanessa.
Lily.
Claire.
The guests.
Everyone suddenly felt like a stranger.
The letter continued.
*Do not believe everything Lily tells you. She has her own reasons for coming back.*
I looked at Lily.
Her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Pain.
“You knew he would say that.””
Lily looked away.
“I expected it.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel always knew how to make people question the truth.””
The name sounded strange.
Daniel.
I had called him Dad my entire life.
But suddenly, he felt like someone I had never met.
I read the final paragraph.
*Ethan, there is one thing you need to understand. The night Rachel died, she wasn’t running away from me. She was running toward someone. Find out who she called that night, and you will find the person responsible.*
The bottom of the page was signed.
*Your father.*
I lowered the letter.
A cold feeling spread through me.
Because my father had just told me where to look.
And somehow, I knew he had done it because he was afraid of what I would find.
“Who did Rachel call?””
Everyone looked at Lily.
She didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
“Lily.””
She took a breath.
“There was one call.””
“Who was it?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“Me.””
The world went silent.
I stared at her.
“You?””
Lily nodded.
“Rachel called me the night she died.””
“Why?””
“She wanted help.””
“With what?””
Lily’s eyes filled with sadness.
“She wanted to get Emma back.””
I felt dizzy.
“Get her back?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Lily stepped closer.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice rose.
“You’re telling me my wife had another child, someone took that child away, my father knew about it, and Rachel called you instead of me?””
Lily didn’t defend herself.
That made it worse.
“She didn’t call you because she thought you would be watched.””
“Watched by who?””
Lily looked at the letter.
My father’s name.
The answer was obvious.
I didn’t want it to be.
“But why would he do that?””
Lily whispered:
“Because he believed Emma was proof of something.””
“What?””
“That Rachel’s first marriage wasn’t what everyone thought.””
I frowned.
“Rachel wasn’t married before me.””
Lily went quiet.
Then she said:
“That’s not what Daniel believed.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?””
Before Lily could answer, my phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a young girl’s voice spoke.
“Is this Ethan Morgan?””
I froze.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Emma.””
The world stopped.
I couldn’t breathe.
The wedding guests.
The ruined dress.
The flowers.
Everything disappeared.
Because somewhere out there was a girl who had just said the name I thought I would never hear from a living person.
My daughter’s sister.
Rachel’s child.
“Emma?””
My voice shook.
“Yes.””
I covered my mouth with my hand.
I didn’t know what to say.
How do you speak to someone who should have been part of your life?
How do you apologize for twelve years you can never give back?
“How did you get this number?””
There was a pause.
Then she whispered:
“Because my mother told me to call you if anything happened.””
My heart pounded.
“Your mother?””
“Rachel.””
I looked at Lily.
Her face had gone pale.
“What happened?””
Emma’s breathing became uneven.
“She told me you didn’t know I existed.””
I closed my eyes.
“I didn’t.””
“I know.””
Her voice was small.
Just like Nia’s had been earlier.
A child carrying something too heavy.
“She said you were a good person.””
A tear slipped down my face before I could stop it.
“Where are you?””
Silence.
Then:
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because he told me not to.””
My entire body went cold.
“Who?””
The answer came quietly.
“Your father.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“Emma, listen to me. Are you safe?””
Another pause.
Then she whispered:
“I don’t know.””
A noise came from her side.
A door closing.
Someone walking.
Her voice became urgent.
“Ethan, I need you to listen.””
“I’m listening.””
“Don’t trust the person who brings me to you.””
My heart raced.
“What does that mean?””
But she didn’t answer.
The call started breaking apart.
“Emma?””
A final whisper came through.
“He knows you found out.””
Then the line went dead.
I stared at the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Until Vanessa quietly said:
“Ethan…”
I looked up.
She was staring toward the entrance.
My blood turned cold.
Because standing there was someone I had not seen leave.
Someone who should not have been able to hear that call.
Someone who had just walked back into the wedding venue.
My father.
May you like
And in his hand was another envelope.
This one was addressed to Nia.
