The Dress She Destroyed / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

For six years, I had replayed the same night in my head.

The rain hitting the windows.

The sound of Rachel’s voice through the phone.

The hospital hallway that smelled like disinfectant and fear.

The doctor who looked at me before saying the words that changed my life forever.

I had spent six years accepting that I would never know everything.

But I had never imagined that one day, at my second wedding, a stranger would walk into my life and say she had been there when my first wife died.

I stared at Lily.

My mind refused to connect the pieces.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Lily didn’t react.

Maybe she expected it.

Maybe she had spent years preparing for the moment when I would look at her like she was a ghost.

“I understand why you don’t believe me.””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

She looked at the ground for a moment.

“My full name is Lily Carter.””

The name meant nothing.

And yet, something about her face bothered me.

Not because I recognized her.

Because I recognized something else.

A feeling.

A memory.

“She knew you.””

Lily nodded slowly.

“Rachel knew me.””

My jaw tightened.

“You expect me to believe my wife had a secret friend I never knew about?””

“I wasn’t her friend.””

The way she said it made everyone around us go quiet.

I glanced at Vanessa.

She looked nervous.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Nervous.

That was new.

“What were you then?””

Lily took a deep breath.

“I was the person Rachel called when she was afraid.””

My stomach dropped.

Afraid?

Rachel had been afraid?

I shook my head.

“No.””

Lily looked at me.

“She never told you.””

“Because there was nothing to tell.””

“You believe that because she wanted you to.””

The words hit harder than they should have.

Because they sounded exactly like something Rachel would say.

She had always protected people.

Even when she was hurting.

Especially when she was hurting.

I looked back at Vanessa.

“You knew about this?””

Vanessa nodded slightly.

“I found out this morning.””

“From my father?””

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because none of this made sense.

“My father gave you messages from my dead wife, a stranger appears at my wedding, and somehow you’re all acting like I’m the one who doesn’t understand.””

Lily opened the folder in her hands.

“I brought proof.””

I didn’t move.

“What kind of proof?””

She looked at Nia.

My daughter was standing beside Claire, watching everything.

Her face was scared.

But she wasn’t looking at Lily.

She was looking at me.

Waiting for me to decide whether this was safe.

Lily noticed.

Her expression softened.

“She looks just like Rachel.””

I immediately became protective.

“Don’t talk about my daughter.””

“I’m not trying to hurt her.””

“Then don’t involve her.””

Lily nodded.

“I agree.””

She closed the folder.

“That’s why I came before the ceremony.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Before?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked toward Vanessa.

“Because Vanessa was right.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked surprised.

I turned toward her.

“Right about what?””

Lily’s voice was quiet.

“She wasn’t trying to humiliate your daughter.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“She cut her dress.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Lily looked at Nia.

“She was trying to stop your daughter from walking into that room.””

“What room?””

No one answered.

And suddenly I felt that same cold feeling again.

The feeling that everyone knew something except me.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“What were you hiding?””

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

For once, Vanessa didn’t have an immediate response.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked away.

“After the wedding.””

I stared at her.

“After I married you?””

Her silence answered.

The anger I felt was different now.

Not explosive.

Something deeper.

A disappointment I couldn’t name.

“You knew there was a problem.””

“Yes.””

“And you still planned to marry me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

“Because I thought I could protect her.””

I almost didn’t hear her.

“You thought destroying her dress was protecting her?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought keeping her away from the ceremony was protecting her.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

Lily stepped forward.

“It does when you know what was waiting inside.””

I looked at her.

“What was waiting?””

She hesitated.

Then opened the folder.

Inside were printed photographs.

Documents.

Copies of messages.

And one picture.

One picture that made my entire body go still.

It was Rachel.

Standing outside a building.

Holding a baby.

Not Nia.

A different baby.

I stared at it.

“What is this?””

Lily watched my face carefully.

“That was taken three months before Rachel died.””

My fingers trembled.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Rachel only had one child.””

Lily didn’t answer.

Instead, she pulled out another document.

A hospital record.

The name on the page was Rachel Morgan.

My eyes scanned the information.

Then stopped.

I couldn’t breathe.

There was a child’s name listed.

A birth date.

A location.

And underneath it…

A signature.

Rachel’s signature.

“What is this?””

My voice sounded broken.

Lily whispered:

“The truth Rachel was trying to tell you.””

I looked up.

“No.””

She didn’t look away.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

I stepped backward.

Because suddenly I didn’t want the answer.

Not anymore.

The unknown had been painful.

But this?

This felt impossible.

“Rachel never had another child.””

Lily’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She did.””

The wedding guests were still watching.

The flowers were still standing.

The cake was still untouched.

But my entire life had just cracked open in front of everyone.

I looked toward Nia.

She looked confused.

“Dad?””

I forced myself to breathe.

“Stay with Claire.””

“But—”

“Please.””

She saw something in my face.

Something that scared her.

And she nodded.

As Claire led her away, I looked back at Lily.

“Tell me everything.””

Lily opened the folder again.

“Rachel found out someone had changed the hospital records.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Changed them?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“She was trying to find out before she died.””

I swallowed.

“Find out what?””

Lily slowly pulled out another piece of paper.

A handwritten note.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Rachel’s.

My hands went numb.

Because I had seen that handwriting every day for ten years.

Birthday cards.

Shopping lists.

Notes left on the kitchen counter.

Love letters.

Lily held it out.

“Rachel wrote this the night before she died.””

I took it.

The paper shook between my fingers.

There were only three lines.

But they changed everything.

*Ethan, if anything happens to me, don’t trust the person who tells you I was confused.*

I stopped reading.

My heart pounded.

Because I knew exactly who had told me that.

The doctor.

The police officer.

My father.

Everyone who had been there after Rachel’s death had said the same thing.

Rachel was stressed.

Rachel was overwhelmed.

Rachel wasn’t thinking clearly.

I forced myself to continue.

The second line was worse.

*The person who hurt me is closer to us than you think.*

And the third line…

The third line made my hands go cold.

*Protect Nia from him.*

I looked up.

The world felt suddenly too quiet.

“From who?””

Nobody answered.

I turned toward Lily.

“Who was Rachel afraid of?””

Lily’s eyes moved toward the parking lot.

Toward the man who had arrived with her.

The man holding the folder.

The man who had been standing silently the entire time.

My father.

Daniel Morgan.

Lily whispered:

“Your father.””

And at that exact moment, my father stepped forward.

He looked at the note in my hand.

Then he said:

“Ethan, before you believe anything that woman tells you…”

He paused.

May you like

His eyes moved to Nia.

“…you need to ask yourself why Rachel was planning to take your daughter away from you.””
