Chapter 4: The Secret Rachel Buried

My father’s words hit harder than any accusation I had heard that day.

Not because I believed him.

Because a small part of me was terrified that I might.

For six years, I had carried one version of Rachel’s death in my head.

A tragic accident.

A terrible night.

A loss nobody could fix.

But now, standing in the middle of the wedding venue I had chosen for my new beginning, I was surrounded by people telling me the life I remembered was built on lies.

My father stepped closer.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

I stared at him.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who held my shoulder at Rachel’s funeral.

The man who told me, “You have to be strong for Nia.””

The same man whose name Rachel had written in her final message.

“Don’t come any closer.””

His expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Something else.

Hurt.

“You’re really going to believe a stranger over your own father?””

I looked at Lily.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at him.

“I don’t know who to believe.””

That was the hardest truth I had ever said.

My father’s face tightened.

“You know me.””

“I thought I did.””

The silence between us became heavier.

Nia was still standing with Claire near the entrance.

She was watching.

She was always watching.

Children noticed more than adults wanted to admit.

I lowered my voice.

“Dad, what happened the night Rachel died?””

His eyes moved away.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

A hesitation.

A crack.

“You know what happened.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I know what everyone told me.””

My father looked at Lily.

“This woman is manipulating you.””

Lily didn’t react.

Instead, she opened the folder again.

“I brought evidence.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“Evidence?””

“Yes.””

“From Rachel?””

Lily nodded.

“From Rachel.””

His expression changed.

A tiny movement.

Almost invisible.

But it was there.

Recognition.

Fear.

“You don’t have anything.””

Lily looked him directly in the eyes.

“I have enough.””

My father’s jaw clenched.

That was when I knew.

Something was real.

Because my father had always been confident.

Even during the hardest moments of my life, he had been the person who seemed impossible to shake.

But now?

He looked like a man watching a locked door begin to open.

I turned toward Lily.

“What happened that night?””

She looked at me.

“I need you to understand something first.””

“What?””

“Rachel didn’t die because of an accident.””

The words were simple.

But they destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.

My mouth went dry.

“What are you saying?””

Lily looked around at the guests.

“At least let’s move somewhere private.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I continued.

“No more private conversations.””

My voice grew louder.

“No more secrets.””

The guests became completely silent.

“This started with my daughter being humiliated in front of everyone because people were trying to hide something from me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

She looked down.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“But you didn’t tell me.””

“I was trying to find the right time.””

I laughed quietly.

“The right time?””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“I was scared.””

That surprised me.

Vanessa scared?

The woman who had stood in front of a crying child holding scissors?

“What were you scared of?””

She looked at my father.

And didn’t answer.

I followed her eyes.

My stomach turned.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“I found out your father had been meeting with someone.””

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“Rachel’s old lawyer.””

My heart stopped.

Rachel had a lawyer?

I looked at Lily.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Lily’s expression softened.

“Because Rachel didn’t want you to know.””

That answer made me angry.

“She was my wife.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because she was trying to protect you.””

I stepped back.

“Protect me from what?””

Lily looked at my father.

“From finding out the truth too soon.””

My father suddenly spoke.

“That’s enough.””

Everyone turned.

His voice was sharper now.

“You’re destroying this family.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re the one who knows something.””

He pointed at Lily.

“She’s lying.””

“Then prove it.””

He froze.

“Ethan.””

“Prove it.””

I stepped closer.

“If she’s lying, tell me what’s false.””

My father opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Lily quietly placed a document on the table near us.

“This is the original hospital report.””

My father looked at it.

Then looked away.

I picked it up.

The paper was old.

The edges were worn.

At the top was the hospital logo.

The same hospital where Rachel died.

I read through the page.

At first, nothing stood out.

Then I saw it.

A line near the bottom.

*Patient arrived accompanied by Daniel Morgan.*

My hands went still.

I looked at my father.

“You were there?””

Nobody spoke.

“You told me you arrived after the ambulance.””

His face changed.

“I was trying to help.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

My voice became louder.

“You told me you weren’t there.””

My father sighed.

“There are things you don’t understand.””

I almost smiled.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Lily looked at me.

“Because they’ve been deciding what you deserve to know.””

The sentence cut deep.

Because it was true.

For years, everyone around me had protected me from something.

But nobody asked if I wanted protection.

Nobody asked if I wanted the truth.

I turned the page.

There was another note attached.

A handwritten statement.

My eyes moved across the words.

Then stopped.

Because it was Rachel’s handwriting again.

*Daniel knows about the baby.*

I felt dizzy.

The baby.

The second child.

The impossible child.

I looked at Lily.

“Who is the baby?””

Her expression changed.

A sadness appeared.

“Her name is Emma.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Where is she?””

Lily looked toward Nia.

Then back at me.

“She was adopted.””

“When?””

“Six years ago.””

The same year Rachel died.

The same year everything fell apart.

I stared at the paper.

“Rachel had another daughter?””

“Yes.””

“And she hid her from me?””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“No, Ethan.””

She stepped closer.

“Rachel didn’t hide Emma from you.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“Then who did?””

Nobody spoke.

I already knew the answer was coming.

But I wasn’t ready.

Lily looked at my father.

“She was told Emma wouldn’t survive if you knew.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

My father’s face turned pale.

“Don’t listen to her.””

I looked at him.

“You threatened her?””

“No.””

“You threatened my wife?””

“No!””

For the first time, his calm disappeared.

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

The sentence made my stomach turn.

Because it was the exact sentence he had used after Rachel died.

The exact sentence he had used every time I asked questions.

I stepped closer.

“Safe from what?””

My father stared at me.

Then he said something I would never forget.

“Safe from the truth about your daughter.””

I froze.

“My daughter?””

He looked toward Nia.

And suddenly everyone understood.

Everyone except me.

“What about Nia?””

My father didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because Lily pulled one final document from the folder.

A DNA report.

She placed it on the table.

My name was printed at the top.

My hands started shaking.

“What is this?””

Lily looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“It’s the test Rachel ordered before she died.””

I stared at the paper.

“Why would Rachel need a DNA test?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father whispered:

“Because Rachel discovered something about Nia.””

I looked down.

The first line of the report came into focus.

And the words beneath it made my entire world collapse.
