Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew My Mother's Secret
Andre didn't leave the room.
That surprised me.
For most of my life, my uncle had been an expert at disappearing whenever a conversation became uncomfortable. He would take a phone call, remember an appointment, or suddenly discover that he had left something important in his car.
But now he stood beside the window, his face drained of color, while my mother watched him as if he had a knife pointed at her back.
“Tell me,” I said.
Andre rubbed both hands over his face.
“Maya, this isn't something you can understand from one conversation.””
“Then make it two.””
He looked at Darius.
“Can we speak privately?””
“No,” I replied.
Andre blinked.
“This concerns your mother and me.””
“It concerns my birth.””
He flinched.
I stepped closer.
“I am not a child you can send out of the room while the adults decide what I can handle. If you know something about Room 314, tell me now.””
My grandmother pulled out a chair.
“Sit down, Andre.””
He obeyed.
It was the first time I had ever seen my grandmother command him without an argument.
She sat opposite him and folded her hands.
“Start at the beginning.””
Andre stared at the table.
“Eighteen years ago, Vanessa called me at two in the morning. She was at St. Catherine's Hospital. She said there had been a mistake with the birth records.””
“What kind of mistake?”” I asked.
“She wouldn't tell me over the phone. When I arrived, she was sitting outside the maternity ward. She had been crying.””
My mother turned toward the window.
Andre continued.
“She said two babies had been delivered close together. There was confusion about the paperwork, and someone had written the wrong name on a form.””
My chest tightened.
“Two babies?””
He nodded.
“That's what she told me.””
Darius sat down slowly.
“Was there another family involved?””
“I don't know.””
“You must know something.””
Andre's jaw worked.
“I know that Vanessa asked me to help her get a copy of a laboratory report. She said she needed it to prove that Darius was your biological father.””
“Why would she ask you?””
“Because I worked for a medical billing company at the time. I knew how to request records and challenge administrative errors.””
I stared at him.
“You helped her get the report?””
“Yes.””
“Did you see the results?””
“I saw a summary.””
“And?””
He closed his eyes.
“It wasn't conclusive.””
Darius gripped the edge of the table.
“Then why did she tell me it was?””
Andre shook his head.
“She said the laboratory had confirmed the result verbally. She said the written report contained an error in the specimen identification, but the doctor had assured her that the conclusion was correct.””
“Which doctor?”” Grandma asked.
Andre looked up.
“Dr. Samuel Reed.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Darius, however, went completely still.
“Reed?”” he repeated.
Andre nodded.
“You know him?””
Darius looked at my mother.
“I remember the name.””
Vanessa's face had turned ashen.
“Don't do this,” she whispered.
Darius ignored her.
“Dr. Reed was the physician who spoke to me in the hallway. He told me the hospital was reviewing the paperwork.””
Andre nodded.
“That was him.””
Darius leaned forward.
“What did he tell Vanessa?””
“I don't know.””
“You were helping her obtain the report.””
“I wasn't in the room every time they spoke!””
“Then why did she tell you the matter was resolved?””
Andre slammed his hand on the table.
“Because she told me it was resolved!””
The room went silent.
He stared at Darius, breathing heavily.
“I was her brother. She was frightened, and she asked me to help. I did what she asked. I never imagined that eighteen years later we'd be sitting here discussing whether Maya's entire identity had been falsified.””
I looked at him.
“Did you ever see the other baby?””
Andre's face changed.
It was a small reaction, but unmistakable.
His gaze darted toward Vanessa.
I felt cold all over.
“Uncle Andre?””
He rubbed his palms against his trousers.
“I saw a baby in the nursery.””
“Was it me?””
“I thought it was.””
“You thought?””
He swallowed.
“There were two bassinets close together. The nurses were moving between them. I was told you were in the second one.””
I stared at him.
“By whom?””
He didn't answer.
My mother stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
I turned on her.
“No. It isn't.””
She reached for my arm.
I stepped away.
“Don't touch me.””
The hurt in her eyes was immediate, but I couldn't bring myself to care.
I had spent three weeks wondering whether my mother was hiding a secret.
Now I was wondering whether she had hidden me from myself.
Darius stood.
“Vanessa, I want the name of the second family.””
“There was no second family.””
Andre looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
She glared at him.
“Don't.””
He shook his head.
“You can't keep doing this.””
“I said don't!””
She struck the table with her palm.
A glass tipped over, spilling water across the cloth.
Grandma Evelyn reached for a napkin.
“Enough shouting. Maya deserves answers, not another performance.””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“You think I'm the villain here?””
“I think you're the only person in this room who still refuses to tell the truth.””
Mom's eyes filled with tears.
“You have no idea what I was trying to protect.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked at me.
For a moment, I thought she might finally surrender.
Instead, she turned toward the door.
“I can't do this.””
Darius stepped in front of her.
“You're not leaving until we finish this conversation.””
She stared at him.
“Move.””
“No.””
“You can't keep me here.””
“I'm not keeping you anywhere. I'm asking you to stop running away from your daughter.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
Then she said something that made my blood turn cold.
“I was trying to protect her from a man who would have taken her away from me.””
Nobody spoke.
Darius slowly stepped aside.
“What man?””
Mom covered her mouth.
Andre whispered, “Vanessa, no.””
I turned toward him.
“Who was he?””
He looked at me with an expression of helpless grief.
“His name was Michael Bennett.””
I waited for him to continue.
Nothing came.
“Who was Michael Bennett?””
Andre looked down.
“My brother.””
The words barely registered.
I knew Andre had an older brother. I'd heard the name Michael during family conversations, but only as a distant relative who had moved away before I was born.
He had never visited.
He had never called.
My mother had always said he lived overseas and wanted nothing to do with the family.
I looked at Andre.
“Are you saying Michael might be my biological father?””
He didn't answer.
But his silence was enough.
Darius gripped the back of a chair.
Vanessa began shaking her head.
“This is not how I wanted you to find out.””
I laughed through my tears.
“Then how did you want me to find out? On my nineteenth birthday? When you finally decided I was old enough to know who I was?””
She reached for me.
I moved away.
“Did you have a relationship with Michael?””
She pressed her lips together.
“Answer me!””
“Yes,” she whispered.
The word seemed to suck all the air from the room.
I looked at Darius.
He was staring at my mother as though the woman he had married had vanished.
“How long?”” he asked.
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“It was before you and I were married.””
Darius laughed once, without humor.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“It's the truth.””
“Then why did you spend eighteen years hiding the possibility that someone else was Maya's father?””
“Because I didn't know!””
The confession came out so suddenly that even Andre stared at her.
Vanessa clutched the back of a chair.
“I didn't know for certain. Michael and I had been together before Darius and I became serious. We had broken up. I thought it was over.””
“And when you discovered you were pregnant?”” Darius asked.
“I believed the baby was yours.””
“Until the hospital?””
She nodded.
“The dates didn't make sense. The doctor said there was a possibility I had miscalculated. I panicked.””
I felt sick.
“So you tested me.””
“I tried to.””
“You tried to?””
“The first report was inconclusive.””
“And then?””
She stared at Andre.
“He told me he could help me get another test.””
Andre shook his head.
“That's not what happened.””
Vanessa snapped toward him.
“Don't you dare!””
He stood.
“You asked me to get the original report. You told me the laboratory had lost a sample. I helped you contact them. But you were the one who decided not to pursue it.””
Mom's mouth opened.
Then closed.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That if the result said Michael was your father, Darius would leave me. He would take you away. I would lose my marriage, my home, everything.””
Darius stared at her.
“You thought I would abandon a child because she wasn't biologically mine?””
“You don't know what you would have done!””
“I know exactly what I would have done.””
He turned toward me.
“I would have raised her.””
His voice trembled.
“I would have loved her.””
He looked back at Vanessa.
“And I did.””
My tears finally spilled over.
For the first time that day, I wasn't afraid that Dad would stop loving me.
I was afraid that my mother had never trusted his love enough to tell him the truth.
I turned toward Andre.
“What happened to Michael?””
He took a long breath.
“He died six years ago.””
My knees weakened.
“Was he ever told about me?””
Andre looked at my mother.
“No,” he whispered.
“He wasn't.””
I stared at her.
“You never told him he might have a daughter?””
Vanessa began to cry harder.
“I didn't know what the test would say.””
“You had eighteen years to find out!””
“I was trying to protect you!””
“No,” I said.
“You were protecting the life you wanted.””
She reached toward me again.
This time, I stepped behind Dad.
His arm came around my shoulders immediately.
Vanessa saw it.
Her face twisted with pain.
“Darius, please. You know I love her.””
He looked at her for a long moment.
“I believe you love her.””
Hope flickered in her eyes.
Then he continued.
“But I don't know whether you've ever loved her enough to let her know the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
My phone vibrated in my hand.
I looked down.
An unknown number had sent me a text.
**My name is Claire Bennett. I was Michael's wife. I know what happened at St.
Catherine's Hospital the night you were born. Your mother doesn't know I'm contacting you.**
A second message appeared.
*Before you believe anything she tells you, please meet me. There is something Michael kept for you.*
I stared at the screen.
My uncle had said Michael died six years ago.
If his wife knew what happened the night I was born, then she might hold the missing piece of the story.
I looked up at Dad.
“Someone just contacted me.””
He read the message.
His expression changed.
“Who is Claire Bennett?””
I looked at my mother.
She had stopped crying.
She was staring at my phone with an expression I had never seen before.
Pure terror.
“Delete it,” she whispered.
I held the phone tighter.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because if Claire Bennett is contacting you now, it means she has finally decided to destroy what's left of this family.””
May you like
Then she said the words that made my blood run cold.
“Your biological father may have died six years ago, Maya. But the person who knows what really happened that night is still alive.””
