Chapter 4: The Name at the Bottom of the Report
For several seconds, nobody in the conference room dared to breathe.
Darius held the DNA report in both hands. The paper trembled, although he seemed unaware of it. His eyes moved over the same paragraph again and again, as if the words might rearrange themselves into something less devastating if he stared long enough.
Vanessa stood opposite him, her handbag hanging from one shoulder.
“Maya,” Grandma Evelyn whispered, “come sit down, sweetheart.””
I couldn't move.
My eyes were fixed on the report.
“What does it say, Dad?””
Darius looked at me.
His mouth opened, but no words came out.
“Please,” I said.
“You've already read it. Just tell me.””
He lowered the pages.
“It says the samples are consistent with a biological relationship.””
“I know that. I read the first result.””
He swallowed.
“This report is different.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
He glanced at Vanessa.
She immediately stepped forward.
“Give it to me, Darius.””
“No.””
“You don't understand the testing.””
“Then explain it.””
She reached for the report again. Darius pulled it against his chest.
“You've spent eighteen years telling me everything was settled. You told me the hospital had confirmed I was Maya's biological father. You told me there was nothing left to discuss.””
“There wasn't.””
“Then why does this report contradict the story you gave me?””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“It doesn't contradict anything.””
“Then read it aloud.””
She stared at him.
“Read it,” he repeated.
When she refused, he looked down at the page.
“The laboratory received two samples under the names Maya Cole and Darius Cole. The results indicate a parent-child relationship with a probability exceeding 99.99 percent.””
He paused.
“That part matches the first report.””
I nodded, struggling to understand why he looked so frightened.
“Then what's wrong?””
Darius turned to the final page.
“There's an additional finding.””
Andre made a strangled sound.
Vanessa spun toward him.
“Don't.””
He lifted both hands.
“I haven't said anything.””
“You don't need to.””
Darius continued reading.
“The laboratory notes that the second sample's collection history could not be independently verified. The result establishes a genetic relationship between the submitted material, but the laboratory cannot certify that the specimen originated from the named individual.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at the envelope.
“It means the sample labeled with my name may not have been mine.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I grabbed the back of a chair.
“But you sent your sample.””
“I thought I did.””
“You used the swab I gave you.””
“Yes.””
“Then how could it not be yours?””
“I don't know, Maya.””
His voice cracked on my name.
That was when I finally understood the difference between the two reports.
The first test had told me something about the biological relationship between the samples.
The second questioned whether the sample bearing my father's name had actually come from him.
Neither report could tell me the truth about my birth if the wrong material had been submitted.
I looked down at my phone.
The reassuring conclusion I had read in the stairwell suddenly seemed like a cruel joke.
“Can we test again?”” I asked.
Darius nodded immediately.
“Of course.””
“Today?””
“If that's what you want.””
“Then let's do it.””
Vanessa laughed.
It was an ugly, sharp sound.
“You think another test will solve this?””
I turned on her.
“Why wouldn't it?””
“Because you don't understand what you're dealing with.””
“Then explain it!””
She slammed her handbag onto the table.
A lipstick rolled out and fell to the floor.
“You have no idea what it took to keep this family together!””
Darius stepped between us.
“Stop using that excuse.””
“It's not an excuse!””
“You've been using it since the day we met. Every time someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, you talk about sacrifice.””
Her face flushed.
“Because I sacrificed everything for this family!””
“What exactly did you sacrifice?”” he demanded.
“Your honesty?””
Vanessa snatched up the lipstick.
“You want to talk about honesty? Fine. Tell Maya where you were the night she was born.””
Darius went still.
My grandmother gripped the table.
“Vanessa,” she warned.
“No. He wants the truth. Let him have it.””
I turned to Dad.
“What is she talking about?””
He looked at me, then away.
For the first time that day, I saw something in his expression that frightened me more than anger.
Shame.
“I was at the hospital,” he said.
“Which hospital?””
“The hospital where you were born.””
Mom shook her head.
“Not all night.””
Darius closed his eyes.
“I arrived after midnight.””
“And what happened when you arrived?””
“Vanessa, stop.””
“Did you ask to see the baby?””
“Yes.””
“Did you?””
He looked at her.
“Yes.””
She took a step closer.
“And did they let you?””
My heart pounded.
“Dad?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“No,” he whispered.
I stared at him.
“Why not?””
He swallowed.
“They told me there had been a complication with the records. They said they needed to verify something before they could release you.””
“Verify what?””
He looked at the report again.
“I was never told.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“And you never asked the right questions.””
“I asked every question I knew how to ask!””
“You accepted my explanation.””
“Because you told me our daughter was ours!””
The words exploded out of him.
A few people outside the conference room fell silent.
Darius lowered his voice, breathing hard.
“You told me the doctors had confirmed everything. You told me the test results were clear. You told me I was being paranoid because I was a first-time father.””
Vanessa's lips tightened.
“You were exhausted.””
“I was terrified. There is a difference.””
He looked at me.
“I remember standing in that hospital hallway with a paper cup of coffee, listening to babies cry behind a closed door. I remember thinking that I would do anything to hold you. Anything.””
His eyes filled.
“And when they finally brought you to me, you were so small that I was afraid to touch you.””
My throat burned.
“Dad…”
He shook his head.
“I don't know what happened that night, Maya. I swear to you, I don't.””
I believed him.
I didn't know why, but I did.
Maybe because I remembered the way he had looked at me when I was little, as if my existence were a gift he had never expected to receive.
Maybe because a man could lie about biology.
But I had never seen Darius lie about love.
Grandma Evelyn came around the table and put her hand on his shoulder.
“Then we'll find out what happened.””
Vanessa backed toward the door.
“No. This ends now.””
I turned to her.
“You don't get to decide that anymore.””
She stared at me.
For a moment, I saw the mother who used to sit beside my bed when I had nightmares, the woman who braided my hair before school and packed handwritten notes into my lunchbox.
Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
“You want answers?”” she asked.
She dropped it onto the table.
“There's your answer.””
I picked it up.
It was a photocopy of a laboratory report dated eighteen years earlier.
At the top was the same private laboratory name I had found on the invoice.
Below it were the names Vanessa Cole and Darius Cole.
I scanned the conclusion.
My hands began to shake.
The report stated that the tested samples were consistent with a biological father-daughter relationship.
For one fleeting second, relief rushed through me.
Then I noticed the date.
The test had been completed two days before my discharge from the hospital.
And beneath the conclusion, someone had handwritten a note.
*Specimen source disputed. Repeat collection recommended.*
I read it again.
“Mom, what does this mean?””
Vanessa's eyes flickered toward Andre.
He looked as though he wanted to disappear through the wall.
Darius took the paper from me.
His face hardened as he read the note.
“You knew,” he said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I knew there were questions.””
“You told me this report proved I was her father.””
“It did.””
“It literally says the specimen source was disputed!””
“The laboratory made an administrative error.””
“Then why didn't you repeat the test?””
She didn't answer.
Darius held up the page.
“Why did you tell me it was settled?””
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Because by then, it didn't matter anymore.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
I stared at her.
“What doesn't matter?””
She looked at me, and for a moment, her expression was almost pleading.
“You had a father. You had a home. You had everything you needed.””
I felt tears gather in my eyes.
“That isn't an answer.””
“It was the only answer that mattered.””
“No,” I said.
“It was the answer that made your life easier.””
She recoiled.
Then she looked at Andre.
He shook his head at her.
“Don't bring me into this.””
But she did.
“You were there, Andre. You know why I couldn't risk another test.””
Andre's face went pale.
Darius slowly lowered the report.
“Risk another test?””
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
I took a step toward my uncle.
“What happened, Andre?””
He stared at the floor.
“Tell her,” Vanessa demanded.
He shook his head.
“I can't.””
“You owe her the truth.””
“So do you!””
His shout startled everyone.
Andre looked at me, tears shining in his eyes.
“I am sorry, Maya.””
“For what?””
He opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, a phone began vibrating on the table.
It was Vanessa's.
The screen lit up with a message from an unsaved number.
I wouldn't have noticed it if she hadn't lunged to grab it.
But I saw the preview before she turned the screen facedown.
*You said the DNA issue was handled. If Maya has the original report, we need to talk before she learns what happened in Room 314.*
I stared at the phone.
Room 314.
The hospital room where I had been born?
Vanessa clutched the device to her chest.
Darius looked at her.
“Who sent that?””
“No one.””
“Who is it?””
“Nobody you need to worry about.””
I stepped closer.
“What's Room 314?””
Her eyes met mine.
For the first time, she looked genuinely desperate.
“Go home, Maya.””
“No.””
“Please.””
The word sounded wrong coming from her.
“Please, just go home.””
I shook my head.
“Not until you tell me who sent that message.””
Vanessa backed toward the door.
Then Andre spoke behind her.
His voice was so quiet that we almost missed it.
“I know who was in Room 314.””
Everyone turned.
May you like
Andre looked at my mother.
“And if Maya finds out, there's no way to protect any of us.””
