Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Claire First
Her name was Vanessa Cole.
I had heard it before.
But only once.
Years ago.
Claire mentioned her during a conversation about work.
“My partner is difficult,” she had said.
I remembered laughing.
“Everyone’s difficult sometimes.””
Claire had rolled her eyes.
“You don’t understand. She thinks she knows everything.””
At the time, I never imagined Vanessa would become connected to the secrets hidden inside my family.
Now I sat across from Thomas in his office, staring at a file with her name on it.
“What happened between them?”” I asked.
Thomas opened the folder.
“Claire and Vanessa owned a small consulting company together.””
I nodded slowly.
“I knew she had a business.””
“What she didn’t tell you was that the company had financial problems.””
“How serious?””
“Serious enough that Vanessa left.””
“And Claire?””
“She stayed.””
I looked at the documents.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Thomas turned a page.
“After Vanessa left, Claire began looking for ways to secure additional funding.””
“From me?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“So the trust…”
“Was the target.””
I stared out the window.
Everything suddenly connected.
The financial forms.
The pressure.
The dinner.
The humiliation.
Claire wasn’t slowly trying to help me.
She was slowly trying to convince me I couldn’t function without her.
Because if I believed that, I would sign anything she placed in front of me.
“When did this start?”” I asked.
Thomas looked at his notes.
“About eighteen months ago.””
Eighteen months.
I thought back.
That was when Claire started saying I was forgetting things.
When she started correcting me.
When she began answering questions before I could.
When she started saying, “Mom, let me handle it.””
I had thought she was becoming more responsible.
She was building a case.
My hands shook.
“Why didn’t Vanessa report this?””
Thomas hesitated.
“She tried.””
“Then why didn’t I know?””
“Because Claire threatened legal action.””
I looked up.
“Against her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Thomas slid another document across the desk.
An email.
From Vanessa.
To Claire.
The date was almost a year earlier.
*You cannot keep pretending the missing funds don’t exist. If you involve Margaret, I will have no choice but to reveal everything.*
I read it again.
Missing funds.
I looked at Thomas.
“Missing from where?””
“That’s what we’re investigating.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Claire.
*I know you talked to Thomas.*
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
*You have no idea what Vanessa is capable of.*
Then another.
*She ruined everything.*
I showed Thomas.
He sighed.
“She’s trying to control the story.””
“What story?””
“The one where she is the victim.””
I didn’t answer.
Because a part of me still wanted to believe Claire had a reason.
A good reason.
Mothers are strange.
Even after being hurt, we search for explanations that save our children.
I wanted her to say:
I was scared.
I made mistakes.
I’m sorry.
Instead, she kept fighting.
That evening, I returned home and found an envelope in my mailbox.
No stamp.
No return address.
Just my name.
Inside was a handwritten note.
*Margaret, I don’t know if Claire has told you the truth. She never tells anyone the truth when it makes her look bad. Meet me tomorrow if you want answers. — Vanessa*
I almost threw it away.
Almost.
But then I saw the second item inside.
A photograph.
It was old.
Claire.
Daniel.
And Vanessa.
Standing outside a building I recognized.
My old neighborhood.
The building where my husband kept his private office.
I turned the photo over.
There was a date written on the back.
The day before Robert died.
My heart stopped.
Why were they there?
And why had nobody told me?
The next morning, I met Vanessa at a quiet coffee shop.
She looked nothing like the villain Claire described.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
Like someone who had been carrying a burden alone.
When she saw me, she stood.
“Margaret?””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For not coming to you sooner.””
I sat down.
“You knew my daughter was trying to control my finances.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“Because Claire made sure I couldn’t.””
“How?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She threatened to expose private information about my divorce.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t explain everything.””
“No.””
She reached into her bag.
And placed a flash drive on the table.
“This does.””
I looked at it.
“What is it?””
“Everything.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Everything about what?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“About why Claire needed your money.””
I swallowed.
“Tell me.””
She took a breath.
“Claire’s business didn’t fail because of bad luck.””
The coffee shop noise faded around me.
“What happened?””
Vanessa whispered:
“She was hiding debt.””
“How much?””
Vanessa looked away.
Then answered.
“More than your entire savings.””
My stomach dropped.
“But why involve me?””
Vanessa’s eyes softened.
“Because she knew something.””
“What?””
“She knew your husband left you something else.””
I froze.
“What else?””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Something Robert never told anyone.””
I waited.
“Claire believed it was hidden somewhere in your house.””
My heart began pounding.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“And she wasn’t searching for money.””
May you like
She paused.
“She was searching for proof.””
