Chapter 10: The Company He Hid From Me

I read the message from Thomas until the words stopped looking like words.

*Your husband left you a controlling interest in a company your daughter has been trying to acquire for two years.*

A company.

I looked around my office.

At the old desk.

The hidden compartment.

The documents spread across the surface.

For nearly three decades, I believed Robert left me a house and a comfortable life.

I believed our story ended with memories, photographs, and the savings we carefully built together.

But apparently, my husband had been carrying a secret.

A secret big enough that my daughter was willing to destroy our relationship over it.

Claire stood in my doorway.

Watching my face.

Waiting for me to understand.

“How long did you know?”” I asked.

Her eyes lowered.

“Mom…”

“How long?””

She took a breath.

“Since before Dad died.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I tried.””

I laughed quietly.

The sound surprised both of us.

“You tried?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Claire stepped forward.

“After the funeral.””

I stared at her.

“You told me I needed to focus on grieving.””

“Because you did.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You told me not to worry about paperwork because you would handle everything.””

Her expression shifted.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Claire, protecting someone does not mean hiding their life from them.””

She looked away.

For once, she had no immediate answer.

My phone buzzed again.

Rachel.

I answered.

“Margaret?””

“I’m here.””

“Thomas forwarded me the documents. We need to meet as soon as possible.””

“Can you explain what this company is?””

There was a pause.

“It’s called Ellis & Rowe Holdings.””

The name sounded familiar.

But distant.

“Ellis?””

“Yes.””

“Robert’s company?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Not exactly.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Robert created it before you knew about it.””

I looked at Claire.

She was listening.

“Why would he hide something like that from me?””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“Maybe he wasn’t hiding it from you.””

She paused.

“Maybe he was hiding it from everyone else.””

After I hung up, Claire sat down.

Not confidently.

Not like she owned the room.

Like someone who knew she had finally lost control.

“Mom, please.””

I remained standing.

“I want the truth.””

“You won’t like it.””

“That’s my choice.””

She rubbed her hands together.

“Dad built the company before he married you.””

I said nothing.

“He started it with Daniel’s father, Richard.””

I looked at the agreement.

The one I found hidden.

“Why?””

“Because they had a business idea.””

“What kind of business?””

“Real estate development.””

I frowned.

“Your father made smart investments. He never wanted us to depend on one source of income.””

I almost smiled.

That sounded like Robert.

Careful.

Responsible.

Always thinking ten steps ahead.

“So why didn’t I know?””

Claire looked uncomfortable.

“Because Dad wanted you away from the business.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because he didn’t want business stress to become our family’s problem.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“What doesn’t?””

“If he trusted me with his life, why wouldn’t he trust me with this?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

The truth was obvious.

My husband trusted me.

He just knew other people wouldn’t respect my role.

“What happened after he died?”” I asked.

Claire looked down.

“I became involved.””

“Why?””

“Because someone had to manage things.””

“There it is again.””

“What?””

“You decided someone had to manage things.””

She flinched.

I continued.

“You never asked what I wanted.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was scared.””

That was the first honest thing she had said.

I sat across from her.

“Scared of what?””

“That you would lose everything.””

I studied her face.

“And somehow you convinced yourself taking control was the same as saving me.””

She nodded slightly.

“Yes.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

Because I could finally see it.

Claire wasn’t a stranger.

She wasn’t a cartoon villain.

She was my daughter.

A person who made terrible choices while convincing herself they were necessary.

But understanding someone’s fear did not erase the damage they caused.

“What did you do, Claire?””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“What did you do with the company?””

Her silence was immediate.

Too immediate.

My stomach dropped.

“You tried to sell it.””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She stood suddenly.

“I need to go.””

“No.””

“Mom—”

“No more leaving when things get difficult.””

The words shocked her.

Maybe because I had never said them before.

She stared at me.

Then quietly said:

“I made a deal.””

“With who?””

She looked toward the window.

“An investor.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Daniel?””

Her silence confirmed it.

My chest tightened.

“You involved your husband.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because we were running out of time.””

“Running out of time for what?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“The company was worth millions.””

I waited.

“And?””

“And if we lost control of it, we would lose everything.””

I looked at her.

“You mean you would.””

She didn’t deny it.

That night, Rachel and Thomas came to my house.

We reviewed every document.

The truth became clearer with every page.

Robert had created a trust.

A trust where I held the controlling interest.

Not Claire.

Not Daniel.

Me.

Because Robert knew exactly what would happen if someone saw me as the easiest person to manipulate.

The next morning, Rachel showed me one final document.

A purchase agreement.

Unsigned.

But prepared.

My name appeared as the seller.

I stared at it.

“They were going to forge this?””

Rachel shook her head.

“Not necessarily.””

“What do you mean?””

“They were trying to pressure you into signing voluntarily.””

I felt sick.

The dinner.

The insults.

The comments about my memory.

The attempt to make me feel dependent.

It was all connected.

They weren’t trying to take my company.

They were trying to make me hand it over.

My phone rang.

Claire.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“What?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Mom.””

“What happened?””

“Daniel knows you found everything.””

I looked at Rachel.

“And?””

“He’s furious.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because he was never planning to wait for you to sign.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Claire whispered:

“He already made the deal.””

The line went silent.

I stood slowly.

“What deal?””

May you like

And Claire answered:

“The one where he promised someone else your company.””
