Chapter 7: The Boy Who Knew Our Secret
I read Noah's message three times before I could make myself move.
My name is Noah Cole. I think we're related.
Then the second message appeared.
And I have proof your stepmother has been lying to your father for a lot longer than you realize.
My first instinct was to block the number.
My second was to call Dad.
Instead, I typed a question.
How did you get my number?
His response arrived almost immediately.
Your stepmother left an old family contact sheet in a folder she gave my father. Your number was on it.
I stared at the screen.
What do you want?
The typing indicator appeared, disappeared, then appeared again.
To find out why my mother gave me away. And to stop your father from losing money that belongs to his family.
I felt cold despite the afternoon heat.
Who is your mother?
His answer came in four words.
Vanessa Bennett. Your stepmother.
I looked up.
Dad was kneeling beside Devin, helping him repair the sandcastle. My little brother was laughing, completely unaware that a boy he'd never met might be his older half brother.
I walked toward Dad.
"Can we talk?""
He looked up immediately.
"Of course.""
"Somewhere private.""
His smile disappeared.
He told Devin to keep building while we walked toward the resort's quieter garden. When we reached a bench beneath a palm tree, I showed him the messages.
He read them without speaking.
Then he looked at me.
"Have you responded?""
"Only to ask who he was.""
Dad read the messages again.
"Don't send him any personal information yet.""
"Do you think he's telling the truth?""
"I don't know.""
He handed back my phone.
"But if he knows about the financial transactions, we need to understand how.""
I showed him the number.
Dad called Patricia and explained the situation. She advised us not to share bank records or confidential documents with an unknown person, even if he claimed to be family.
"If this Noah exists and has relevant information, we can establish his identity and speak with him carefully," she said.
"But don't let anyone pressure you into making promises.""
Dad agreed.
Then he looked at me.
"Do you want to meet him?""
I considered the question.
Part of me wanted to know everything immediately. Another part wanted to return to the beach and pretend our family had never cracked open.
"Yes," I said.
"But I don't want to do it alone.""
"You won't.""
I replied to Noah.
My father knows you've contacted me. If you have information, explain what you mean. We aren't sending money or sharing private documents.
His answer came a minute later.
I don't want money. I want answers.
Then he sent a photograph.
It showed a woman standing beside a teenage boy outside a brick house. The woman was younger than the Vanessa I knew, with the same green eyes and the same distinctive dimple in her left cheek.
The boy looked about seventeen.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.
Seventeen years earlier.
Dad studied the image.
"That's Vanessa," he said quietly.
"How do you know?""
"I've seen photographs from before we met.""
He zoomed in on the boy.
"Whoever he is, he certainly resembles her.""
I typed another message.
Where are you?
Charlotte. I can meet tomorrow. My father doesn't know I'm contacting you.
Dad immediately frowned.
"That's a problem.""
"What if Ethan is hiding something from him, too?""
"Then we need to be careful.""
He called Patricia again and asked her to help establish a safe way to communicate with Noah. After a short discussion, they agreed that any meeting would take place in a public location, with Dad present.
I sent Noah the details.
He agreed.
That evening, we returned to our hotel room.
Devin had spent the afternoon swimming and was now asleep with his stuffed dog tucked beneath his arm. Dad sat at the small desk reviewing the financial records Patricia had sent.
I sat by the window, staring at the ocean.
"Do you think Mom gave Noah away because she didn't want him?"" Devin had asked earlier, after Dad explained that we needed to return to Charlotte sooner than expected.
Dad had told him that adults sometimes made complicated decisions before they understood their consequences.
It was the kindest answer he could offer.
But I couldn't stop thinking about Noah.
He had grown up without his biological mother, while I had grown up with a stepmother who made me feel unwanted.
We had been living different versions of the same story.
My phone rang at 9:32 p.m.
Vanessa.
Dad looked at the screen.
"You don't have to answer.""
I hesitated.
Then I picked up.
"What do you want?""
"Maya, please. Is your father there?""
"He's here.""
"I need to speak with him.""
"About Noah?""
She inhaled sharply.
"You've been talking to him?""
"He contacted me.""
"Oh, God.""
Her voice trembled.
"Maya, you cannot trust Ethan. He's been manipulating me for years.""
Dad leaned closer and switched on the speaker.
"Then explain why you gave him access to my financial documents.""
Vanessa fell silent.
Finally, she whispered, "Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of losing everything.""
"You've said that before. It isn't an answer.""
She began crying.
"I never wanted you to find out this way.""
Dad's expression hardened.
"How did you want me to find out? After the money was gone? After someone took my mother's house? After Ethan became the beneficiary of my investment account?""
"I never wanted him to take your money!""
"Then why did you help him?""
"I thought I could stop him from telling Noah the truth.""
I gripped the edge of the desk.
"What truth?""
Vanessa's breathing became ragged.
"Ethan told me that Noah had started asking questions about his adoption. He found old paperwork and discovered that his biological mother had left him shortly after he was born.""
"That doesn't explain the money," Dad said.
"He threatened to tell Noah everything about me. He said Noah would hate me if he knew I had built another family and never looked for him.""
I felt a sharp ache in my chest.
"Did you look for him?"" I asked.
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Vanessa, did you ever try to find Noah?""
"I thought about it.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Her voice hardened.
"I was nineteen, Maya. I had no money, no support, and no idea how to raise a child. I thought giving him a better life was the right thing to do.""
"Then why didn't you tell Dad when you married him?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Why didn't you tell him when Devin was born?""
"Because I thought the past was behind me!""
Her voice broke.
"I made a terrible decision. I know that. But I didn't expect Ethan to come back into my life and threaten to expose everything.""
Dad leaned toward the phone.
"Did you have an affair with Ethan while you were married to me?""
Silence.
It lasted so long that I thought the call had dropped.
Then Vanessa whispered, "Yes.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"When?""
"Two years ago.""
My stomach turned.
"Two years ago?"" Dad repeated.
"Just once.""
He let out a slow breath.
"And the money?""
"Ethan said he was in trouble. He told me he needed help with a business investment. I gave him money because I thought he'd leave us alone afterward.""
"You gave him forty-eight thousand dollars?""
"I thought I could replace it before you noticed.""
"And the loan against my mother's house?""
"I didn't mean for that to happen.""
"Did you forge my signature?""
"No!""
Her answer was immediate.
Dad stared at the phone.
"Then who did?""
Vanessa began sobbing.
"I don't know.""
"You gave Ethan my documents. You knew he was asking for money. You knew he was threatening to expose your secret. And now you're telling me you have no idea how my signature appeared on a loan application.""
"I swear to you, Andre, I never signed your name.""
Dad ended the call.
For several seconds, the room was completely silent.
Then he stood and walked to the window.
I followed him.
"Do you believe her?""
He looked out at the dark ocean.
"I believe she is frightened.""
"That's not the same thing.""
"No," he said.
"It isn't.""
He turned toward me.
"Tomorrow, we find out who Noah is, what he knows, and whether any of this can be verified.""
I nodded.
Dad squeezed my shoulder.
"Whatever happens, Maya, you and Devin are not responsible for fixing Vanessa's mistakes.""
I wanted to believe him.
But at 11:06 p.m., Noah sent one final message.
I found something in the adoption file.
Then he attached a photograph of a document.
The image was blurry, but I could make out the date, the names of the biological parents, and a handwritten note at the bottom.
I enlarged it.
My breath stopped.
The note read:
*The biological father has not been identified.*
Noah had been told that Ethan Cole was his father.
May you like
But the adoption paperwork suggested that even Vanessa might not have known the truth.
And if Ethan wasn't Noah's biological father, why had he spent seventeen years controlling the secret?
