Chapter 4: The Man on the Porch

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The stranger stood beside his silver sedan, holding a thick envelope against his chest. He looked to be in his early forties, with a navy suit, polished shoes, and the impatient expression of someone who had driven across town expecting to collect money.

Vanessa gripped the porch railing.

"Mr. Collins," she said, forcing a smile.

"This isn't a good time.""

The man glanced at my father.

"Well, Mrs. Bennett, you specifically told me your husband would be here this morning.""

Dad switched off the engine.

"Who are you?""

The man approached the truck cautiously.

"Richard Collins. I'm a private lender. Your wife and I have been discussing a business arrangement.""

Dad's expression changed.

"What business arrangement?""

Richard opened the envelope and removed several sheets of paper.

"Perhaps you should ask your wife. She signed the agreement.""

Vanessa hurried down the steps.

"Richard, please. I explained that there had been a misunderstanding.""

Richard looked at her.

"You told me the money would be available today.""

"It will be.""

"Then why haven't you answered my calls?""

She glanced at Dad.

"I've been dealing with a family emergency.""

Richard gave a short, humorless laugh.

"That doesn't change our agreement.""

Dad climbed out of the truck.

"Let me see those papers.""

Richard hesitated, then handed them over.

I watched my father's eyes move across the first page. His face remained still, but his jaw tightened as he reached the signature line.

"What is this?"" he asked.

Richard pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"A private loan secured against an investment property. Your wife said the property was worth considerably more than the loan amount.""

Dad looked up.

"What property?""

Vanessa stepped between them.

"Andre, please. Let me explain this inside.""

"No.""

"You're embarrassing me!""

Dad held up the document.

"You borrowed money against a property I own, and you think the embarrassing part is that someone found out?""

Richard frowned.

"Wait. You own the property?""

Dad didn't answer him. He was reading the document again.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"This is my mother's house.""

My stomach tightened.

Grandma's house.

The small brick house in which my father had grown up. The place where I used to spend weekends before she died. The house with the yellow kitchen, the creaking stairs, and the backyard where Dad had taught me to ride a bicycle.

After Grandma passed away, Dad kept the property. He said he couldn't bear to sell it.

It had been empty for several months while he considered renovating it.

Vanessa knew how much it meant to him.

"You told me the house was available as collateral," Richard said.

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

"I said we were working on the paperwork.""

Richard pulled another document from the envelope.

"You gave me a copy of the property deed and a signed authorization.""

Dad snatched the paper.

His eyes narrowed.

"This isn't my signature.""

Richard went pale.

"What?""

"This isn't my signature.""

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"Andre, you're making this sound worse than it is.""

Dad turned toward her.

"Did you forge my signature?""

"No!""

"Then explain why someone signed my name.""

She looked at Richard, then at me, then back at Dad.

"I was going to tell you.""

"You've said that already.""

"I needed money.""

"For what?""

She pressed her lips together.

Richard glanced between them.

"Mrs. Bennett told me the funds were for a renovation project. She said you were expanding your construction business and needed a short-term bridge loan.""

Dad stared at her.

"You told him my company needed money?""

"I didn't say your company was struggling.""

"You used my business to secure a loan against my mother's house.""

"I intended to repay it!""

"With what?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I had a plan.""

Dad's voice dropped.

"Tell me the plan.""

She looked toward the house as if the answer might be waiting inside.

Then she whispered, "I was going to use the money to invest in something.""

Richard gave a disbelieving laugh.

"You said it was for a property development opportunity.""

Vanessa turned sharply toward him.

"Stop talking.""

"No," Dad said.

"He can talk. Apparently, he's the only person here who isn't trying to hide something.""

Richard cleared his throat.

"For the record, I haven't transferred the full amount yet. I advanced twenty-five thousand dollars as a deposit. The remaining funds were supposed to be released after the collateral documents were verified.""

Dad looked at the paperwork again.

"Did you verify the deed?""

"My office was in the process of confirming the ownership. That's why I came here. Your wife assured me that the documentation was legitimate.""

Dad handed the papers back.

"You have been given false information. I did not authorize this loan, and I did not sign these documents.""

Richard nodded slowly.

"I understand.""

"Do you?""

"Yes, sir. I'll suspend the transaction pending legal review.""

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

"Richard, please. You can't do that. I need another week.""

He removed her hand.

"You told me you had authorization. If that isn't true, you have a serious problem.""

He turned to Dad.

"I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'll have my attorney contact you.""

Then he walked back to his car.

Vanessa followed him.

"Richard! Please!""

He opened the driver's door.

"You should have told me the truth.""

He drove away without another word.

Vanessa stood in the driveway, watching his car disappear.

My father remained beside the truck, the papers still in his hand.

When she finally turned around, the tears had vanished from her face.

"You're enjoying this," she said to me.

I stared at her.

"What?""

"You've been waiting for this. You've always wanted me gone.""

Dad stepped between us.

"Enough.""

Vanessa pointed at me.

"She sent you those screenshots because she wanted to destroy our marriage. She knew exactly what she was doing.""

"No," Dad replied.

"She showed me the truth because you kept lying.""

"I was protecting this family!""

"From what?""

Vanessa looked at him desperately.

"From losing everything!""

Dad went still.

"What does that mean?""

She shook her head.

"Nothing.""

"Vanessa.""

"I said nothing!""

Her voice cracked across the driveway.

Then she covered her mouth, as if she couldn't believe she'd shouted at him.

Dad took a slow breath.

"Get inside.""

She looked hopeful.

"Andre—"

"Get inside. We're going to discuss the money, the documents, and every other thing you've been hiding. But my children are not staying here to listen to this.""

He opened the passenger door for me.

I climbed in without looking at Vanessa.

As Dad drove away, I watched her shrink in the side mirror.

For the first time, I wondered whether the woman who had controlled every detail of our lives had been frightened all along.

Not of me.

Not of Devin.

But of someone discovering what she had done.

We drove to a hotel near the airport, where Dad booked two rooms connected by an adjoining door. Devin immediately claimed the bed closest to the window, while I sat on the edge of mine and stared at my phone.

Vanessa had sent eleven messages.

The first accused me of ruining the family.

The next three demanded that I persuade Dad to come home.

The last seven alternated between apologies and threats.

I didn't answer any of them.

A knock sounded on my door.

Dad entered carrying two cups of hot chocolate.

"Thought you might want one.""

I accepted the cup.

"Thanks.""

He sat beside me.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, "I'm sorry I didn't see what was happening.""

I stared into the chocolate.

"You were working.""

"That's not an excuse.""

"You trusted her.""

"I did.""

He rubbed his hands together.

"I thought that loving someone meant trusting them to take care of the people you loved. I never imagined she'd use that trust to hurt you.""

My throat tightened.

"Do you still love her?""

He looked toward the window.

"I don't know what I feel right now.""

It was the first honest answer anyone had given me about Vanessa all day.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a message from Devin.

He was in the room next door.

Can I come sit with you?

I smiled sadly and typed back.

Of course.

A minute later, Devin appeared in the doorway, carrying his favorite stuffed dog.

"Is Mom going to get arrested?"" he asked.

Dad's face softened.

"Nobody knows that, buddy. We need to find out what happened before we make any decisions.""

"Did she steal money?""

Dad paused.

"We don't know everything yet.""

Devin looked at me.

"Does that mean we're not a family anymore?""

I moved over and patted the bed beside me.

"You're my brother," I said.

"That doesn't change.""

He climbed up beside me.

"What if Mom doesn't love you?""

The question cut deeper than he could have understood.

I put my arm around his shoulders.

"That's something Mom has to answer for herself.""

He leaned against me.

Dad watched us, his eyes shining.

Then his phone rang.

He answered, listened for several seconds, and slowly stood.

"Who is it?"" I asked.

He covered the microphone.

"Richard Collins's attorney.""

Dad listened again.

Then his expression hardened.

"Apparently, Richard's office found something else while reviewing the paperwork.""

He looked at me.

"The loan wasn't the only transaction Vanessa made.""

"What else did she do?""

Dad ended the call and stared at his phone.

"She transferred money out of our joint savings account.""

"How much?""

He swallowed.

"Forty-eight thousand dollars.""

Devin sat upright.

"That's a lot of money.""

Dad nodded.

Then he looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Fear.

"There's something else," he said quietly.

"The account records show the money wasn't transferred to a business.""

He turned the screen toward me.

The recipient's name was displayed beneath the transaction.

*Ethan Cole.*

I didn't recognize the name.

But my father did.

May you like

He sat down heavily in the chair beside the bed.

"Ethan Cole is Vanessa's ex-boyfriend.""
