Chapter 11: The Mother Who Chose The Wrong Daughter
Nobody spoke.
Victoria looked at me like I had just wounded her.
But for the first time, I didn’t feel guilty.
I had spent twenty years carrying pain that wasn’t mine.
Now it was her turn to answer.
“You remember,” she whispered.
I nodded slowly.
“Not everything.””
My voice shook.
“But enough.””
Daniel looked between us.
“Victoria.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want this.””
I laughed quietly.
“You never wanted anything except control.””
Her expression broke.
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
I looked around the room.
“At what point was anything about my life fair?””
The silence was painful.
Olivia and Charlotte stood behind us, watching.
For the first time, they weren’t my enemies.
They were witnesses.
Victoria sat down.
“I was wrong.””
The words sounded impossible.
But they were real.
“I thought if I kept you away from the truth, you would be safe.””
“Safe from what?””
She looked at Daniel.
“From losing everything.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You lost her anyway.””
That sentence hurt.
Because it was true.
Victoria looked at me.
“When Richard came that night, you were hiding upstairs.””
My memory flashed again.
A small version of myself.
A dark hallway.
A broken picture frame.
“I heard him arguing with your father.””
“What did they say?””
Victoria swallowed.
“He told Daniel that the company belonged to him.””
Daniel added:
“He threatened Samantha.””
My hands tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Richard knew about the inheritance.””
Victoria looked at me.
“He knew your father planned to leave everything to you.””
I whispered:
“So he wanted me gone.””
“Yes.””
The room became cold.
“What happened next?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“You came downstairs.””
I frowned.
“I did?””
“Yes.””
She looked at the floor.
“You saw Richard holding the gun.””
Nobody moved.
The words felt impossible.
“A gun?””
Victoria nodded.
“You were three years old.””
My breathing became uneven.
“I remember…”
Everyone looked at me.
“A loud noise.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“The shot.””
I covered my mouth.
“And then?””
Victoria’s voice broke.
“You screamed.””
A tear fell down her face.
“You kept asking if your father was sleeping.””
My heart shattered.
Because suddenly, I remembered.
Not everything.
Just pieces.
My father on the floor.
My mother crying.
A man running away.
And then…
a hand covering my mouth.
“Who told me not to speak?””
Victoria looked away.
I already knew.
“Mother.””
She couldn’t deny it.
“I was terrified.””
“You told your own daughter to forget.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You were trying to protect the family name.””
Victoria looked down.
Because she knew.
I turned away.
The pain was too much.
Then Alexander quietly spoke.
“Samantha.””
I looked at him.
“There’s something else.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He pointed toward the desk.
Among the scattered papers was a small recorder.
Daniel picked it up.
“This wasn’t here before.””
Alexander pressed play.
A voice filled the room.
Richard.
Everyone froze.
“You always thought you won, Daniel.””
The recording continued.
“But you made one mistake.””
A pause.
“You trusted Victoria.””
Victoria’s face changed.
Richard laughed softly.
“She was always weak when it came to Samantha.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then the recorder continued automatically.
A second message.
This time, Richard’s voice was colder.
“Bring me the girl.””
My blood ran cold.
The message ended.
Alexander immediately looked at the guards.
“We need to leave.””
But before anyone moved…
the front doors downstairs opened.
Slowly.
Someone walked inside.
Everyone froze.
A man’s voice echoed through the mansion.
“Leaving already?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Richard.””
The man appeared at the bottom of the staircase.
Older.
Confident.
Calm.
Exactly like someone who believed he owned the world.
He looked up.
His eyes landed on me.
“So this is Samantha.””
I stared at him.
The man responsible for everything.
The man who stole my childhood.
Richard smiled.
“You look just like your father.””
Alexander moved slightly in front of me.
Richard noticed.
“How sweet.””
He laughed.
“The billionaire protecting the forgotten daughter.””
My eyes narrowed.
“How did you get inside?””
Richard looked around the mansion.
“Because this house was never as secure as you believed.””
Daniel stepped down.
“You’re finished.””
Richard smiled.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I’m just beginning.””
Then he reached into his coat.
Everyone reacted.
But instead of a weapon…
he pulled out an old photograph.
He threw it onto the floor.
The picture landed face up.
I looked down.
And froze.
It was me.
As a child.
Standing beside Richard.
Holding his hand.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because I had no memory of that moment.
Richard smiled.
“You don’t remember me.””
May you like
A pause.
“But you will.””
