Chapter 1: The Girl Behind The Kitchen Door
“Don’t slow down, Samantha. Rich people don’t like waiting.””
Those were the first words I heard on the night my entire life changed.
The California sunset painted the ocean outside the Collins mansion with shades of gold and crimson. From the outside, the house looked like a dream.
From the inside, it was a prison.
The mansion stood on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with towering glass windows, white marble floors, and crystal chandeliers that reflected light across every expensive corner.
Guests often called it beautiful.
They never saw what happened behind the kitchen doors.
They never saw me.
My name was Samantha Collins.
I was twenty years old.
And I lived in the same mansion as my family while feeling like I belonged nowhere inside it.
That evening, I stood beside the kitchen sink wearing a plain white apron while my hands soaked in warm, soapy water.
A mountain of dishes sat in front of me.
I had already cleaned the dining room.
Polished the silverware.
Prepared the guest rooms.
Folded the expensive clothes my sisters left on the floor.
But somehow, there was always something else.
There was always another reason for my mother to remind me that I was not like my sisters.
Not like Olivia.
Not like Charlotte.
My two sisters stood in front of a giant mirror in the living room, laughing as they adjusted their designer dresses.
Olivia wore a deep blue gown that probably cost more than my entire wardrobe.
Charlotte wore a sparkling silver dress covered with tiny diamonds.
They looked like princesses.
I looked like someone hired to clean their castle.
“Samantha!”” my mother’s voice suddenly cut through the mansion.
My fingers froze around a glass plate.
I already knew that tone.
Victoria Collins never called my name because she needed me.
She called my name because she wanted something.
I quickly dried my hands and stepped into the living room.
“Yes, Mother?””
Victoria stood near the staircase, wearing a black silk dress and expensive jewelry. She was elegant, beautiful, and terrifying.
Everyone in the city admired her.
They called her graceful.
Powerful.
Successful.
But I knew the woman behind the public smile.
“You left fingerprints on the wine glasses,” she said coldly.
I looked confused.
“I cleaned them twice.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Are you arguing with me?””
“No, Mother.””
“Then fix it.””
I lowered my head.
“Yes, ma’am.””
A small laugh came from the mirror.
Olivia looked at me through her reflection.
“She really does sound like an employee.””
Charlotte smiled while putting on her earrings.
“Maybe because that’s the only role she has here.””
The words hurt more than I wanted to admit.
But I had learned something over the years.
Silence was safer.
I returned to the kitchen without saying anything.
Behind me, my mother’s voice became warmer.
A voice she never used with me.
“Girls, remember tonight could change everything.””
Olivia and Charlotte immediately turned around.
“The billionaire?”” Olivia asked excitedly.
Victoria smiled.
“Yes. Alexander Hayes.””
Even hearing his name made the atmosphere change.
Everyone knew Alexander Hayes.
At twenty-eight years old, he had built a technology empire worth billions.
Newspapers called him a genius.
Business magazines called him unstoppable.
Women across the country dreamed of meeting him.
And tonight, he was coming to our mansion.
Not for business.
For a marriage arrangement.
Victoria had spent months trying to create the perfect opportunity.
She believed one of her daughters could become the future Mrs. Alexander Hayes.
“The important thing is that he sees your beauty, your elegance, and your family background,” Victoria said.
Olivia touched her necklace.
“Do you think he’ll choose me?””
Charlotte immediately laughed.
“He’ll choose me. Everyone knows men prefer confidence.””
Olivia rolled her eyes.
“You mean arrogance.””
Their argument made my mother smile.
She loved watching them compete.
She loved everything about them.
Their beauty.
Their popularity.
Their ability to impress wealthy people.
Everything I wasn’t.
I quietly returned to the kitchen.
But before I reached the sink, I looked through the window at the ocean.
For a moment, I imagined another life.
A life where someone asked how my day was.
A life where someone noticed when I was tired.
A life where my last name meant family instead of loneliness.
Then my mother’s voice shattered the thought.
“Samantha!””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes?””
“Stop dreaming and finish those dishes.””
I swallowed.
“Yes, Mother.””
Hours passed.
The mansion became brighter as the staff prepared for Alexander’s arrival.
Flowers filled the halls.
Candles burned.
Music played softly.
Meanwhile, I stayed hidden near the kitchen.
Like always.
Then suddenly…
The giant front doors opened.
Every conversation stopped.
The sound of expensive shoes stepping onto marble echoed through the mansion.
Alexander Hayes had arrived.
I could hear my mother’s excited voice.
“Welcome. It’s such an honor to have you here.””
I slowly turned toward the living room.
A tall man stood beneath the crystal chandelier.
He wore a perfectly tailored black suit.
His expression was calm.
Cold.
Controlled.
Security guards stood behind him.
This was the kind of man people moved aside for.
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
“Alexander, these are my daughters.””
She placed Olivia and Charlotte in front of him.
“These are my beautiful girls.””
Both sisters smiled.
Perfect smiles.
Practiced smiles.
Alexander looked at them politely.
But something was wrong.
He didn’t seem interested.
His eyes moved across the room.
Searching.
Victoria noticed.
Her smile weakened.
“Perhaps we should move to the salon.””
But Alexander didn’t answer.
His eyes stopped.
On me.
The plate in my hands almost slipped.
For a moment, I wondered if I was imagining it.
Nobody looked at me.
Not like that.
Not with curiosity.
Not with recognition.
The entire mansion became silent.
Olivia slowly turned around.
Charlotte’s smile disappeared.
Victoria looked confused.
Then worried.
Alexander took one step forward.
Toward the kitchen.
Toward me.
I stood frozen.
My hands were wet.
My apron was stained.
I looked nothing like the women standing beside my mother.
But he kept walking.
Finally, he stopped directly in front of me.
The billionaire looked at the plate in my hand.
Then at my face.
And after several seconds of silence…
he spoke.
“Samantha Collins?””
My heart stopped.
I had never met him before.
May you like
So how did he know my name?
And why did my mother suddenly look terrified?
