The Daughter Nobody Saw / Chapter 7 / 11

Chapter 7: The Half of the House Nobody Knew About

For several seconds, Marcus could not make himself look at his daughter.

The document lay open on the coffee table, its edges trembling slightly beneath Mr. Cole's fingers. Two names appeared beneath the heading Beneficial Ownership, each followed by a percentage.

Maya Carter — 50%.

Daniel Carter — 50%.

The house on Willow Creek Road had been Eleanor's most precious possession. Marcus had watched her paint the kitchen cabinets herself, plant the apple tree in the backyard, and spend entire weekends restoring furniture she could easily have replaced.

She had once told him that the house was the only place where she never felt she had to prove anything.

And now a document bearing her handwriting suggested that she had divided its ownership between their daughter and his brother.

Marcus reached for the page.

Mr. Cole held it back.

“Please don't remove it from the folder yet. We need to preserve its condition.””

“Tell me what I'm looking at.””

“I'm not certain. This appears to be a schedule of beneficial interests, but we need the original trust deed and any amendments before we can determine whether it has legal effect.””

Marcus pointed at Daniel's name.

“Why would my brother own half of my daughter's inheritance?””

Maya stood near the fireplace, her face pale.

“Dad, does that mean Mom didn't leave me the house?””

Marcus turned toward her immediately.

“No. We don't know what this document means yet.””

“But it says fifty percent.””

“I can read it.””

The sharpness in his voice made her flinch.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart. I didn't mean to snap at you.””

Maya wrapped her arms around herself.

“Vanessa said Mom was hiding something.””

“Vanessa also said your mother used money to control people. We have no reason to accept her interpretation without evidence.””

Mr. Cole studied the page under the light.

“There is something unusual about this document,” he said.

“What?”” Marcus asked.

“The reference number in the upper-right corner doesn't match the numbering system used in Eleanor's original trust.””

“Could it be a draft?””

“Possibly. It could also be a schedule attached to a separate agreement. We need to find out who prepared it and when.””

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

“Where did Daniel get this?””

She shook her head.

“He gave it to me in a folder with the other documents. He said it explained the ownership arrangement.””

“You never asked why my daughter didn't know she owned only half the house?””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“He told me you had agreed to the arrangement.””

“I never agreed to anything.””

“I believed him.””

Maya looked at her.

“You believed him when he said my mother didn't want me to have the whole house?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Your mother was a complicated woman, Maya. She made decisions without telling people everything.””

“You mean she made decisions without telling you.””

The room fell silent.

Vanessa stared at the girl.

Maya's hands were trembling, but she continued.

“You kept telling me that I didn't deserve the house. You said I was too young to understand anything. But you never told me there was a document saying Uncle Daniel owned half of it. You only told me that you could take it away.””

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

“She's twisting my words.””

“No,” Marcus replied.

“She's finally repeating them where someone can hear.””

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

“I have nothing more to say.””

“Sit down,” Mr. Cole said.

She turned toward him.

“Excuse me?””

“You brought potentially significant legal documents into this house. We need a clear record of where they came from and what Daniel told you about them.””

“I am not under arrest.””

“No one said you were. But if you want to explain your involvement, this is your opportunity.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus, apparently expecting him to intervene.

He didn't.

Slowly, she sat.

Mr. Cole placed the disputed document in a protective sleeve.

“I'm going to request the complete trust file from the attorney who drafted the original documents. Until we receive it, we should not assume that this schedule establishes ownership.””

Marcus nodded.

“Do that immediately.””

Maya looked at the paper.

“What happens if Uncle Daniel really owns half?””

Mr. Cole answered carefully.

“Even if the document is genuine, we must establish whether it was validly executed and whether it was intended to amend the trust. A page with percentages on it does not automatically establish legal ownership.””

“And if it is real?””

“Then we'll investigate the circumstances and determine what rights exist.””

Maya lowered her head.

Marcus moved toward her, but she stepped back.

“I need a minute.””

She walked into the kitchen and shut the door.

Marcus remained where he was.

He had spent the entire day telling Maya that nobody could take her house. Now, for the first time, he understood that he had been speaking before he possessed all the facts.

He followed her a few minutes later.

Maya stood at the sink, staring into the dark garden.

“Sweetheart?””

“Did Mom lie to me?””

Marcus leaned against the counter.

“No.””

“How do you know?””

He thought carefully before answering.

“Because not telling someone every detail isn't the same as lying to them. Your mother may have had reasons for making an arrangement we don't understand yet. But whatever those reasons were, you deserve to know them.””

Maya turned.

“What if she gave Uncle Daniel half because she thought he was better than me at taking care of the house?””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“Your mother never believed you were less capable than anyone else.””

“Then why would she choose him?””

“I don't know.””

Maya wiped her eyes.

“I hate that answer.””

“So do I.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Marcus pulled out a chair.

“Do you remember what your mother used to say about the apple tree?””

Maya nodded reluctantly.

“That it was supposed to grow crooked because I planted an apple seed too close to the fence.””

“She said crooked trees still produce good fruit.””

A faint smile appeared on Maya's face.

“She said people kept trying to straighten things that weren't broken.””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“Exactly.””

He waited until Maya sat down.

“Whatever happened with that document, we're not going to force the facts to fit what we want to believe. We'll find out what your mother actually intended. And if someone used her trust to benefit themselves, we'll deal with that too.””

Maya studied him.

“Even if it's Uncle Daniel?””

“Especially if it's Uncle Daniel.””

A knock sounded at the front door.

Mr. Cole appeared in the kitchen entrance.

“Marcus, it's Daniel.””

Marcus straightened.

“Did he say why he's here?””

“He says he wants to collect the documents Vanessa brought.””

Marcus shook his head.

“He's not getting them.””

“I told him they would remain in our custody until we establish their origin.””

Maya looked toward the hallway.

“Can I hear what he says?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he remembered his promise not to keep the truth from her.

“You can listen from here. You don't have to speak to him.””

They walked into the living room together.

Daniel stood just inside the entrance, wearing the same navy suit he had worn that morning. His eyes went immediately to the folder in Mr. Cole's hands.

“Richard, give me the documents.””

“They were provided by Vanessa, and I am preserving them as evidence of a disputed transaction.””

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

“I'm trying to protect you.””

Marcus laughed once.

“From what? The documents you gave your wife?””

Daniel ignored the question.

“Did you read the ownership schedule?””

“Yes.””

“Then you understand that Eleanor intended the house to support both sides of the family.””

Maya stepped out from behind her father.

“Both sides of the family?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Maya, your mother wanted to make sure the house remained protected even if something happened to your father.””

“By giving it to you?””

“By making me a beneficiary of a carefully structured arrangement.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Daniel's expression softened.

“Because you were young, and your father was grieving. The legal details were complicated.””

Maya stared at him.

“You told Vanessa to make me sign papers.””

“I asked her to help obtain your consent to a financial proposal.””

“You told her I didn't own the whole house.””

“I told her there was a beneficial interest that needed to be clarified.””

Maya's voice cracked.

“Did you know she threatened me?””

Daniel hesitated.

It was the wrong answer before he even spoke.

“I knew there had been disagreements.””

“Did you know?””

“I wasn't involved in every conversation between you and Vanessa.””

Maya looked at her father.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Stop hiding behind technical language. Did you know Vanessa was threatening Maya with the house?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“I knew she was trying to get your attention. You were refusing to discuss the company's financial position, and she was under considerable pressure.””

“So you let her use my daughter?””

“I did not tell her to frighten Maya.””

“But you benefited from the pressure.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“The company needs financing. If the project fails, hundreds of people could be affected.””

“Then find another source of financing.””

“You don't understand the urgency.””

“Explain it.””

Daniel glanced at Mr. Cole.

“I can't discuss confidential company information in front of a minor.””

Maya's face changed.

“You had no problem discussing my house in front of the bank.””

Daniel stared at her.

Marcus felt a fierce surge of pride.

His daughter had spent years shrinking herself whenever adults raised their voices. Now she was standing in front of the man who had helped create her fear, demanding an answer.

Daniel adjusted his cuff.

“I'm not going to argue with a child.””

“Then stop treating her inheritance like your personal bank account,” Marcus replied.

Daniel turned toward him.

“You're making a mistake.””

“Perhaps. But at least it's my mistake to make.””

Mr. Cole opened the front door.

“Daniel, you need to leave.””

Daniel remained still for a moment.

Then he looked directly at Maya.

“Ask your father what happened ten years ago. Ask him why your mother believed he needed to be protected from the truth.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Get out.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“You'll find out soon enough.””

He walked through the doorway.

Before Marcus could close it, Daniel turned back.

“One more thing, Marcus. The original trust file isn't with Richard. Eleanor moved it before she died.””

Mr. Cole frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel gave a thin smile.

“Ask the person who helped her move it.””

Then he left.

Marcus closed the door and turned toward the attorney.

“Who helped Eleanor move the trust file?””

Mr. Cole looked genuinely unsettled.

“I don't know.””

But Maya was staring at the envelope on the coffee table.

At the bottom of the handwritten note, beneath Eleanor's signature, there was a line Marcus had overlooked.

A name.

Not Daniel's.

Not Vanessa's.

*Patricia Lewis.*

And beside it, in Eleanor's handwriting, were four words.

She knows where it is.
