Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Maya found the message before Marcus could decide whether to answer it.

He had left his phone on the kitchen counter at Eleanor's house while reviewing Patricia's records with Mr. Cole. Maya had come downstairs looking for a glass of water and spotted Vanessa's name glowing across the screen.

She did not open the message.

She did not need to.

The preview was enough.

When Marcus returned to the kitchen, Maya was sitting at the table, staring at the old apple tree through the window.

“Vanessa wants to talk to me,” she said.

Marcus stopped.

“What?””

“She says she has proof Mom knew about the money.””

He took the phone from the counter and read the message again.

“No.””

Maya looked at him.

“You haven't even heard what she has to say.””

“She doesn't get to use your mother's memory to manipulate you.””

“What if she's telling the truth?””

Marcus pulled out a chair.

“Then we'll establish that through the records. You don't need to meet her alone.””

“I'm not asking to meet her alone.””

“Good.””

Maya folded her arms.

“I'm asking you not to decide everything for me because you're scared.””

The words landed harder than she intended.

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

Then he sat down.

“You're right. I am scared.””

Maya blinked.

He rarely admitted that.

“I'm scared that my brother used my name to move money. I'm scared that your mother knew something was wrong and I didn't listen closely enough. And I'm scared that the people I trusted have made you believe you have to earn the right to feel safe.””

Maya looked down at her hands.

“But I won't stop you from knowing the truth,” Marcus continued.

“We'll hear what Vanessa has to say with Mr. Cole present. We'll record what is said in accordance with the law, and we won't let anyone pressure you into signing anything.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“Can we meet at Mom's house?””

Marcus understood why.

She wanted to stand on familiar ground. She wanted the place Vanessa had threatened to take away from her to be the one place where Vanessa could not control the conversation.

“All right.””

He called Vanessa.

She answered on the first ring.

“Finally,” she said.

“I've been trying to reach you.””

“What proof do you have?””

“I told you. Eleanor's records.””

“Then bring them to Willow Creek Road tonight. Seven o'clock. Mr. Cole will be present.””

Vanessa went quiet.

“I said I wanted to speak privately.””

“My daughter will not meet you privately.””

“Marcus, I am still her stepmother.””

“Then you should have behaved like one.””

She inhaled sharply.

“You've made up your mind about me.””

“No. I'm giving you a chance to explain yourself.””

“Seven o'clock,” she said coldly.

“But when you see the documents, I expect you to stop treating me like a criminal.””

The call ended.

Maya watched her father put the phone down.

“Will she come?””

“Yes.””

“What if she tells me Mom did something wrong?””

Marcus reached across the table.

“Then we'll ask questions. We won't assume. Your mother was human, sweetheart.

She might have made mistakes. But no mistake would give anyone permission to threaten you.””

Maya absorbed that quietly.

She was beginning to understand something she had never learned from Vanessa: the truth did not have to be simple to be worth hearing.

At six forty-five, Mr. Cole arrived with two additional folders and a small digital recorder.

He set everything on the coffee table.

“I've reviewed the records Patricia provided,” he said.

“The evidence suggests that some transactions may have been improperly documented. We still need independent verification before drawing conclusions about misconduct.””

Marcus nodded.

“What about the proposed financing?””

“The bank has not approved anything. I've sent a formal notice to the trustee and the relevant parties that no authorization should be relied upon until the trust documents have been reviewed.””

“Could Daniel still obtain a loan using the property?””

“Not lawfully without the required approvals. But I want the bank to confirm in writing that no application has progressed beyond preliminary review.””

Maya sat in the armchair near the fireplace.

“Can Vanessa take the house from me if Dad and Uncle Daniel have a fight?””

Mr. Cole turned toward her.

“Not simply because of a family disagreement. The trust exists to protect your interest. We need to understand the documents that were circulated, but your ownership is not automatically changed by someone's request for a loan.””

Maya nodded.

For the first time since the party, she felt the tension in her shoulders ease slightly.

At seven precisely, a car pulled into the driveway.

Vanessa arrived carrying a cream-colored handbag and a thick document envelope. She was no longer wearing the beige designer dress from the party. Instead, she had chosen a black coat over a tailored dress, with pearl earrings and carefully styled hair.

She looked ready for a board meeting.

Not a family confrontation.

When Marcus opened the door, she glanced past him.

“Where's Maya?””

“In the living room.””

Vanessa walked inside without waiting for an invitation.

She stopped when she saw Mr. Cole.

“I told you I wanted to speak privately.””

“And I told you my daughter wouldn't meet you alone,” Marcus replied.

Vanessa placed her handbag on the coffee table.

“Fine.””

Her eyes moved toward Maya.

For a brief moment, her expression softened.

“Maya, sweetheart, I know you're upset.””

Maya remained seated.

“Please don't call me sweetheart.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Very well.””

She removed a thick folder from her bag.

“I want everyone to understand that I never intended to hurt you. Daniel explained that the company was in serious trouble. He said the bank could call in the loan, several employees could lose their jobs, and your father could be dragged into a public financial scandal.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“So you decided to put my daughter's house at risk.””

“I decided to help.””

“By threatening her?””

“I never threatened her.””

Maya leaned forward.

“You told me that if I refused to sign, I'd lose the house before I ever got it.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I was trying to make you understand the seriousness of the situation.””

“You said Dad would believe you instead of me.””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.

Mr. Cole interrupted.

“Let's stay with the documents. What did you bring?””

Vanessa pushed the folder toward him.

“Copies of Eleanor's financial records and a letter she sent Daniel shortly before her death.””

Marcus's pulse quickened.

“Why do you have my wife's private records?””

“Daniel gave them to me when he asked for help with the loan proposal.””

“Why would he give you confidential financial documents?””

“Because he needed someone who understood how the family operated.””

Mr. Cole opened the folder.

The first several pages were bank statements. Some were familiar from Patricia's records. Others concerned Eleanor's personal investment account.

The final page was a letter.

Marcus recognized the handwriting immediately.

Eleanor's.

He reached for it, but Mr. Cole held it in place.

“Let's examine this carefully before we assume it is complete or authentic.””

Vanessa gave a thin smile.

“You're welcome to do whatever you like. It's real.””

The letter was dated three months before Eleanor's death.

Daniel,

I have reviewed the transfer records. Marcus believes the money was used to stabilize the company, and I have not corrected him because I am trying to protect him during this difficult period.

However, I did not authorize the additional payments to Northbridge Advisory.

The money I provided was intended to save the project, not to reward you for managing the crisis.

I need the original loan agreement, the supporting invoices, and a written account of every payment made from the funds I provided.

If the records cannot be produced, I will ask Richard to investigate the transactions independently.

Please do not confuse my decision to help Marcus with permission to use my money as you see fit.

Eleanor.

The room fell silent.

Marcus read it twice.

His wife had known.

She had known that at least part of the money might have gone somewhere it was never intended to go.

But she had not known how far it extended.

Maya watched her father's face.

“Why didn't Mom tell you?””

Marcus struggled to speak.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa seized the opening.

“Because she knew the truth would destroy you. She knew you would never forgive Daniel if you discovered what happened.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Is that why you helped him?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I believed Daniel had corrected the problem.””

“Did he show you proof?””

“He said the company was working on it.””

“That's not proof.””

“He told me the bank had accepted the explanation.””

Marcus looked at Mr. Cole.

The attorney was studying the letter with a troubled expression.

“What?”” Marcus asked.

Mr. Cole turned the page over.

There was a faint handwritten notation on the back, partly obscured by a fold.

He tilted it toward the light.

The note was brief.

If Marcus asks, tell him I approved the entire transfer.

Marcus stared at it.

“That's not Eleanor's handwriting.””

Vanessa stiffened.

“What?””

He pointed to the note.

“That's not how my wife wrote her capital letters.””

Mr. Cole examined it.

“I agree that the handwriting appears different from the letter itself. We should have it examined, and we need to establish the document's chain of custody.””

Vanessa snatched at the page.

“You're accusing me of fabricating evidence?””

“No,” Mr. Cole said calmly.

“I'm saying that we cannot authenticate this notation based on appearance alone.””

“Daniel gave me the letter exactly as he received it.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then why didn't Daniel give it directly to me?””

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

“Because he knew you would react like this.””

“Like what?””

“Like a man who would rather destroy his family than admit his brother made a mistake.””

Marcus rose from his chair.

“Enough.””

The word rang through the small living room.

Vanessa stood too.

“You asked for an explanation. I've given you one. Eleanor knew about the transfers.

She authorized the money. She simply regretted it later.””

Maya looked at the letter.

“That doesn't mean she gave Uncle Daniel permission to take more.””

Vanessa turned on her.

“You don't understand business.””

“No,” Maya replied.

“But I understand what Mom wrote. She said she didn't authorize the additional payments.””

Vanessa stared at the girl.

For several seconds, she seemed unable to decide how to answer.

Then she leaned forward.

“You should be careful about accusing people, Maya. There are things about your mother you don't know.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“That's enough.””

“No,” Vanessa snapped.

“You want the truth? Fine. Eleanor wasn't as innocent as you want to believe.

She used money to control people. She made promises she couldn't keep. She protected Daniel because she felt guilty about something that happened years ago.””

Marcus went still.

“What happened?””

Vanessa's expression shifted.

For the first time that evening, she looked as though she had said more than she intended.

Mr. Cole closed the folder.

“Vanessa, if you have evidence of another matter, you should identify it rather than use it to threaten Maya.””

Vanessa's shoulders rose with a sharp breath.

“I am not threatening her.””

“Then stop speaking to her that way.””

Vanessa looked toward Maya.

Something in her face softened, but it did not appear to be remorse.

It looked like calculation.

“Do you really want to know why Eleanor left you that house?”” she asked.

Maya sat very still.

“Because she loved me.””

“Of course she loved you. But that isn't the whole reason.””

Marcus grabbed the edge of the table.

“Tell us what you mean.””

Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

She placed it on the coffee table.

“This came from Daniel. I wasn't supposed to show it to you until after the financing was approved.””

Mr. Cole looked sharply at her.

“Why would he ask you to withhold evidence until after the loan was approved?””

Vanessa ignored him.

She addressed Maya instead.

“Your mother believed someone in this family would eventually try to use the house. That's why she put it in trust. But she didn't do it because she was afraid of Daniel.””

Maya's heart began to pound.

“Then why?””

Vanessa pushed the envelope toward her.

“Because of your father.””

Marcus went pale.

“That's a lie.””

“Is it?”” Vanessa asked.

“Read the document.””

Mr. Cole immediately lifted a hand.

“Maya, don't sign or write anything. I'll review the contents first.””

He opened the envelope and removed a photocopy of a legal agreement dated several months before Eleanor's death.

The title read:

*ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF BENEFICIAL INTEREST AND REPAYMENT OBLIGATION.*

Marcus scanned the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His hands began to shake.

The document appeared to show that Marcus had personally acknowledged receiving funds from Eleanor's estate and had agreed to repay them from future company profits.

Beneath the agreement was a signature that looked almost exactly like his.

Maya turned toward him.

“Dad, did you sign that?””

“No.””

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

“That's what he says now.””

Marcus glared at her.

“I never saw this document.””

“Then explain why your signature is on it.””

“I can't explain something I never signed.””

Mr. Cole studied the photocopy.

“The original must be obtained and independently examined. This document could have significant implications if it was used to support the loan application.””

Marcus looked at the final paragraph.

The agreement stated that if repayment could not be completed, certain assets belonging to the Carter family could be reviewed as potential security.

One property was specifically named.

The house on Willow Creek Road.

Marcus felt as if he had been punched.

“Daniel is trying to use this document to claim Maya's house was always intended to secure my debt.””

Vanessa did not answer.

“Is that what he's doing?””

She looked down.

Then she whispered, “He told me the house was never really meant to belong to Maya outright.””

Maya stood.

“My mom left it to me.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“And Daniel said your mother only did that because she was hiding what happened to the money.””

Marcus reached for the agreement.

Mr. Cole kept it in place.

“Careful. We need to preserve this exactly as received.””

He photographed the page and made a note of the time and date.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Do you have any other documents?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“There's one more.””

She removed a final sheet from the envelope.

This one was not a bank record or an agreement.

It was a handwritten note addressed to Daniel.

Marcus recognized the handwriting immediately.

It belonged to Eleanor.

Daniel,

If Marcus ever discovers the truth about the money, tell him what we agreed before my surgery.

Tell him why I chose to protect Maya's house even if it means exposing what happened ten years ago.

And please, for once in your life, keep the promise you made to me.

Eleanor.

Marcus stared at the page.

“What happened ten years ago?”” he demanded.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I don't know everything.””

“Then why did you bring this?””

“Because Daniel told me the old agreement was the key to understanding the house.””

Mr. Cole carefully took the note.

“We will need the original, if one exists, and the surrounding records.””

Vanessa's phone began vibrating in her handbag.

She glanced at the screen.

Her face drained of color.

Marcus noticed the name.

Daniel.

“Answer it,” he said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Marcus—”

“Put it on speaker.””

Her fingers trembled as she accepted the call.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

“Vanessa, tell me you've given them the documents.””

She looked at Marcus.

“I have.””

A sharp silence followed.

Then Daniel said, “All of them?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

She hesitated.

Marcus leaned toward the phone.

“What aren't you telling us, Daniel?””

His brother's voice dropped.

“Marcus, listen to me carefully. Whatever Vanessa gave you, do not let Maya read the final page.””

Maya went rigid.

Mr. Cole looked at the documents in his hands.

Marcus's voice became ice.

“Why?””

Daniel answered with a sentence that changed everything.

“Because the final page proves Eleanor knew who actually owned that house before she died.””

Maya's face went white.

Marcus stared at the phone.

“It's my daughter's house.””

“No,” Daniel said.

Then the line went dead.

On the coffee table, beneath the agreement bearing Marcus's disputed signature, Mr. Cole found a page that had been folded inward.

He carefully opened it.

At the top was Eleanor's handwriting.

Below it were two names.

*MAYA CARTER.*

*DANIEL CARTER.*

And beside them, in a column labeled Beneficial Ownership, was a percentage that made Marcus forget how to breathe.

*Fifty percent each.*
