Chapter 9: The Daughter in the Warehouse

“Please! Somebody help me!””

The scream coming from Ethan's phone sounded exactly like Samantha.

Then the line went dead.

Nobody breathed.

Ethan stared at the blank screen.

Samantha stared at him.

“That was me.””

Victor Hayes smiled.

“No.””

Samantha turned toward him.

“That was my voice.””

Victor tapped his cane once against the floor.

“You have your father's voice, too.””

Nathaniel stepped forward.

“Where is she?””

Victor's expression remained calm.

“Who?””

“The woman at Pier Seven.””

Victor looked at Samantha.

“Your daughter.””

Samantha's stomach twisted.

“I don't have a daughter.””

“Not yet.””

The room went silent.

Ethan suddenly grabbed Victor by the coat.

“What did you do?””

Victor did not resist.

Instead, he looked at Ethan.

“You're angry.””

“My family is at that warehouse.””

“No.””

Ethan's grip tightened.

“My sister is there.””

Victor's smile disappeared.

“Now you finally understand.””

Nathaniel stepped between them.

“Where is Samantha’s twin?””

Victor glanced at him.

“Alive.””

“Then we're going there.””

Victor laughed softly.

“You'll be too late.””

Samantha pushed past Nathaniel.

“What did you mean when you said she's my daughter?””

Victor looked directly at her.

“You'll understand when you see her.””

“I want an answer now.””

“You were always more like Marcus than your mother.””

Samantha didn't flinch.

“Tell me.””

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“Twenty years ago, Victoria gave birth to two girls.””

Samantha's breath caught.

“One went to the Hayes side.””

He nodded toward her.

“And one went to the Blackwell side.””

He looked at Ethan.

“Emily.””

Ethan released him.

“Then who is at Pier Seven?””

Victor smiled.

“That is what you're going to find out.””

Nathaniel grabbed his jacket.

“Ethan.””

Ethan was already moving.

“Let's go.””

Samantha followed.

Victoria caught her arm.

“Don't.””

Samantha pulled free.

“You don't get to tell me where I go anymore.””

“You have no idea what is waiting for you.””

Samantha looked at her.

“Neither did you.””

Victoria's face crumpled.

“Samantha, please.””

Samantha stopped.

For one brief moment, she saw the mother she had spent years trying to love.

Not the woman who shouted.

Not the woman who lied.

Just a frightened seventeen-year-old who had once held two newborn babies and made a decision that destroyed three lives.

Samantha's voice softened.

“Why didn't you ever tell me I had a twin?””

Victoria whispered,

“Because your grandfather said one of you would have to disappear.””

“And you chose me?””

“No.””

Victoria began crying.

“He chose.””

Samantha frowned.

“What?””

Victoria looked at Victor.

“He decided which baby would carry the Hayes name.””

Victor's expression stayed cold.

“And the other?””

Victoria looked at Ethan.

“Daniel took her.””

Ethan stared.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“You knew he had a daughter?””

“I knew he had a baby.””

Ethan's face tightened.

“And you never told me?””

“You were eleven.””

“I would have protected her.””

Victoria shook her head.

“You couldn't even protect yourself.””

Ethan looked away.

Nathaniel grabbed the car keys.

“We'll argue later.””

Victor called after them.

“You won't need a car.””

Nathaniel stopped.

Victor reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small black device.

“Pier Seven is already sealed.””

Ethan stared at it.

“What did you do?””

Victor smiled.

“Exactly what your father would have done.””

Samantha looked at him.

“You're not coming?””

“Oh, I am.””

He pressed a button.

Far away, something beeped.

Then every phone in the room received the same message.

A photograph.

Samantha opened it.

Her hands began to shake.

It showed a young woman tied to a chair inside a dark warehouse.

Her face was Samantha's face.

But her hair was longer.

A bruise marked one cheek.

Her eyes were wide with fear.

Beneath the photograph was a single sentence.

*COME ALONE, OR SHE DIES.*

Ethan cursed.

Nathaniel immediately shook his head.

“It's a trap.””

Victor smiled.

“Of course.””

Samantha looked at him.

“You want me to go.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you're the key.””

“To what?””

Victor didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at the brass key still hanging from Samantha's fingers.

“To your father's final secret.””

Twenty-five minutes later, the gates of Pier Seven appeared through the windshield.

The ocean was black under the night sky.

Shipping cranes stood like enormous skeletons against the clouds.

The warehouse was dark.

No workers.

No trucks.

No security.

Too quiet.

Ethan parked a hundred yards away.

Nathaniel looked at Samantha.

“You stay in the car.””

“No.””

“Samantha—”

“She is my sister.””

Nathaniel sighed.

“I know.””

“She might be hurt.””

“I know.””

“Then I'm going.””

Ethan opened his door.

“She's right.””

Nathaniel stared at him.

“Don't encourage her.””

Ethan looked toward the warehouse.

“My father trained us to recognize traps.””

“And?””

“This isn't just a trap.””

“What is it?””

Ethan's face hardened.

“A test.””

They approached the warehouse on foot.

The huge metal doors were already open.

Inside, only a few emergency lights glowed.

Samantha heard dripping water.

A chain moved somewhere overhead.

Then a woman's voice echoed through the darkness.

“Samantha?””

Samantha stopped.

“Emily?””

The voice came again.

“Please.””

Ethan took a step forward.

“Emily, it's Ethan.””

Silence.

Then a man's voice answered.

“Wrong answer.””

A gunshot cracked through the warehouse.

Samantha screamed.

Nathaniel pulled her behind a metal pillar.

Ethan dropped to one knee.

The bullet struck the concrete wall.

“Stay down!”” Nathaniel shouted.

Another shot.

Then silence.

Samantha's heart hammered.

“Where is she?””

Ethan pointed toward the upper level.

“There.””

They moved through rows of shipping containers.

Ethan reached a metal staircase.

He looked back.

“Stay behind me.””

Samantha followed.

At the top, they found a locked office.

A woman's hand appeared beneath the door.

Samantha recognized the silver ring.

It was the same ring her father had worn in the old photograph.

The door opened.

A young woman stumbled out.

She looked at Samantha.

Both sisters froze.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Same eyes.

Same nose.

Same mouth.

Different lives.

Different scars.

But the same face.

Emily whispered,

“You're real.””

Samantha's eyes filled.

“So are you.””

Emily almost laughed.

Then she began crying.

She threw her arms around Samantha.

Samantha held her.

For the first time in her life, she was holding someone who felt strangely familiar.

“I thought I was crazy,” Emily whispered.

“Why?””

“Because for years I dreamed about someone who looked like me.””

Samantha pulled back.

“I dreamed about you too.””

Emily stared.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“I saw you in my dreams.””

Samantha smiled through tears.

“So did I.””

Then Ethan walked toward them.

“Emily.””

She stiffened.

He stopped.

“I know this is a lot.””

Emily looked at him.

“Do you know what they told me?””

Ethan shook his head.

“They told me I was an only child.””

“I was told the same.””

Emily wiped her face.

“Your father knew.””

Ethan's face changed.

“What?””

“He came to see me when I was sixteen.””

Ethan froze.

“My father?””

Emily nodded.

“He told me one day I would understand why he couldn't claim me.””

Ethan's voice broke.

“What else did he say?””

Emily looked at Samantha.

“He told me to find my sister.””

Samantha's eyes widened.

“Why?””

Emily reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“He said she would have a key.””

Samantha looked at the brass key in her hand.

Emily nodded.

“That key.””

Samantha unfolded the paper.

There was a handwritten message.

*When the sisters stand together, open the vault beneath Pier Seven.*

Nathaniel stared.

“Vault?””

Emily nodded.

“He told me the truth about the company was hidden here.””

A slow clap came from the darkness.

Everyone turned.

Victor stepped into the light.

Victoria stood behind him.

Ethan immediately moved in front of the sisters.

“You brought my mother?””

Victor smiled.

“She wanted to see how her daughters turned out.””

Victoria looked at Samantha and Emily.

She was crying.

“My girls.””

Samantha stared at her.

“Don't call us that.””

Victoria flinched.

Victor raised his cane.

“Enough.””

He pointed toward the warehouse floor.

“Give me the key.””

Samantha closed her hand around it.

“No.””

Victor's expression changed.

“You don't understand what happens if you refuse.””

Samantha stepped forward.

“For twenty years, everyone has told me what happens when I refuse.””

She looked at Emily.

“I'm done being afraid.””

Nathaniel smiled faintly.

“That’s my sister.””

Victor's face hardened.

“You think strength will save you?””

Samantha looked around.

“No.””

She pointed toward the floor.

“Truth will.””

She inserted the brass key into a small metal panel hidden beneath the stairs.

A click sounded.

The concrete floor began to move.

Ethan stared.

A section of the warehouse floor slid aside, revealing a steel staircase descending into darkness.

Victor's smile vanished.

“No.””

Samantha looked down.

“We found it.””

Nathaniel stepped beside her.

Then a light flickered on beneath the warehouse.

Rows of locked cabinets filled the hidden chamber.

Files.

Hard drives.

Cash ledgers.

Photographs.

And at the center stood a steel safe with one name engraved across it.

*MARCUS HAYES.*

Samantha took one step down.

Then the warehouse doors slammed shut behind them.

A mechanical lock engaged.

Victor's voice echoed from above.

“You should never have opened that door.””

Samantha turned.

Victor wasn't smiling anymore.

He looked terrified.

And before anyone could move, every monitor in the hidden vault suddenly turned on at once.

A video appeared.

Marcus Hayes sat in a chair.

Alive.

And looking directly into the camera.

“If my daughters are watching this…”

He paused.

“…then I failed to protect them.””

Samantha stopped breathing.

Marcus leaned toward the camera.

“There is something your grandfather never knew.””

His eyes shifted.

Toward the other camera.

Toward Emily.

“The two girls were never the real inheritance.””

The screen went black.

May you like

Then one final sentence appeared.

*THEY WERE THE EVIDENCE.*
