Chapter 6: The Blackwell Heir
The man who entered the mansion didn't look like someone who had come to negotiate.
He looked like someone who already believed the outcome belonged to him.
Ethan Blackwell was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a charcoal suit that fit him perfectly. His dark hair was neatly combed back, and a thin silver watch rested against his wrist.
But it was his eyes that made Samantha uneasy.
They were cold.
Focused.
And when they landed on her, he didn't look surprised.
He looked relieved.
“Which one is Samantha?””
Nobody answered.
Ethan glanced toward Victoria.
“You didn't tell me there were three.””
Victoria forced herself to stand.
“Ethan, this isn't a good time.””
He smiled faintly.
“It became a good time the moment your daughter was identified.””
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“You're not taking anyone anywhere.””
Ethan's eyes shifted to him.
“Nathaniel Hayes.””
“You know who I am.””
“Everyone in California knows who you are.””
Nathaniel's jaw tightened.
“Then you know you should leave.””
Ethan gave a quiet laugh.
“I don't take orders from Hayes men.””
Samantha looked at him.
“Why are you here?””
Ethan looked directly at her.
“Because you're the woman I'm supposed to marry.””
The words landed like a slap.
Olivia stared.
Charlotte whispered, “Oh my God.””
Samantha shook her head.
“No.””
Ethan didn't seem offended.
“You've known me for twenty seconds, and you've already decided?””
“I don't know you.””
“That's easy to fix.””
“I don't want to fix it.””
His expression changed slightly.
Not anger.
Interest.
“You've got more courage than your mother described.””
Victoria stepped between them.
“We discussed this.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Yes. We did.””
“Then you know she isn't prepared.””
“Prepared for what?””
“For marriage.””
Ethan looked back at Samantha.
“That isn't what I was told.””
Samantha felt every eye in the room on her.
She took a breath.
“I am not marrying you.””
Ethan nodded once.
“That's your decision.””
Nathaniel frowned.
“Good. Then we're finished.””
“No,” Ethan said calmly.
“We're not.””
He reached into his jacket and removed a thin leather folder.
“I came here because your mother signed something.””
Victoria's face went pale.
Ethan placed the folder on the nearest table.
“Three years ago.””
Nathaniel picked it up.
“What is this?””
“A guarantee.””
Nathaniel opened it.
His eyes moved across the first page.
Then the second.
His expression hardened.
“Victoria pledged the mansion as collateral.””
Samantha stared at her mother.
“You did that?””
Victoria's voice shook.
“I was trying to protect everyone.””
Ethan corrected her.
“You were trying to buy time.””
Nathaniel looked up.
“With what money?””
Ethan smiled.
“Blackwell money.””
Victoria whispered, “Please.””
“I gave you six million dollars.””
Samantha's mouth fell open.
“For what?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“To keep the house.””
Samantha looked around the mansion.
The marble.
The chandeliers.
The gold.
All of it suddenly felt different.
“You borrowed that much?””
Victoria nodded.
“I thought I could repay it.””
Nathaniel flipped another page.
“You couldn't.””
“No.””
Ethan folded his arms.
“And now the repayment date has arrived.””
Samantha looked at him.
“You're here for the house?””
“Partly.””
“And me?””
“Also partly.””
Nathaniel slammed the folder shut.
“She's not a transaction.””
Ethan's eyes hardened.
“She wasn't supposed to become one.””
Nathaniel stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan said nothing.
Samantha stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Both men looked at her.
She pointed toward the folder.
“How much time do we have?””
Victoria whispered, “Forty-eight hours.””
Samantha's face tightened.
“And after that?””
Ethan answered.
“I take possession of the collateral.””
Nathaniel said, “We'll pay you.””
Ethan looked amused.
“With what?””
“I have money.””
“Not enough.””
Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.
“How much do you want?””
Ethan shook his head.
“That's the wrong question.””
“Then what's the right one?””
Ethan looked at Samantha.
“What is she willing to sacrifice?””
Samantha stared back.
“Nothing.””
Ethan's eyebrows lifted.
“Then your family loses everything.””
Silence.
Olivia suddenly stepped forward.
“Why should she sacrifice anything?””
Everyone turned.
Olivia's voice shook.
“She didn't create this debt.””
Ethan looked at her.
“No.””
Charlotte joined her.
“She didn't ask Mom to hide her.””
“No.””
Olivia swallowed.
“Then why does she have to marry you?””
Ethan's expression softened for the first time.
“Because your grandfather wrote it that way.””
Nathaniel immediately said, “My grandfather's plan was built on a lie.””
“Then prove it.””
Nathaniel stepped closer.
“I will.””
Ethan nodded.
“I expected you to.””
The two men stared at each other.
Samantha noticed something strange.
They didn't sound like strangers.
They sounded like men who already knew exactly how dangerous the other could be.
“Have you two met before?”” she asked.
Neither answered.
Samantha looked at Nathaniel.
“Have you?””
Nathaniel finally said, “Yes.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
Ethan interrupted.
“At your father's funeral.””
Nathaniel's face tightened.
“You were there.””
“I was.””
Samantha looked between them.
“Why?””
Ethan replied, “Because our families have been fighting longer than you've been alive.””
Samantha shook her head.
“And now I'm supposed to marry into that?””
“No,” Nathaniel said immediately.
Ethan gave him a cold look.
“That isn't your decision.””
“It is hers.””
“Agreed.””
Everyone looked at Ethan.
He walked closer to Samantha.
“What I'm about to tell you is something your mother should have told you twenty years ago.””
Victoria whispered, “Don't.””
Ethan ignored her.
“Your father wasn't only a businessman.””
Samantha's brow furrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“Marcus Hayes was about to expose your grandfather.””
Nathaniel stared.
“Expose him for what?””
Ethan looked at him.
“Fraud.””
Silence.
Eleanor suddenly gripped the back of a chair.
“No.””
Ethan continued.
“Your grandfather had moved billions through shell companies for years.””
Nathaniel's face changed.
“That can't be true.””
“It can.””
“My father's name was on those companies.””
“Because your grandfather used his son as a shield.””
Ethan turned toward Samantha.
“Marcus found out.””
Samantha whispered, “And that's why he died?””
Ethan didn't answer immediately.
“That's why your grandfather couldn't allow Marcus to speak.””
Nathaniel stepped closer.
“You're saying my grandfather killed my father.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I said your grandfather couldn't allow him to speak.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“It will be when you find the missing records.””
Samantha frowned.
“What records?””
Ethan reached into his jacket again.
This time he removed a small brass key.
He placed it in Samantha's palm.
She stared at it.
“What is this?””
“A safe deposit key.””
“Where?””
Ethan looked toward Victoria.
“Ask your mother.””
Victoria's breathing stopped.
Nathaniel turned.
“Victoria?””
She backed away.
“No.””
Samantha closed her fingers around the key.
“Where?””
Victoria shook her head.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
“You should never have that.””
“Why?””
“Because your father left something behind.””
Samantha's heart began pounding.
“What?””
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“A recording.””
Nathaniel immediately stepped forward.
“Of what?””
Victoria looked at him.
“Your father.””
Samantha's eyes widened.
“Alive?””
“No.””
Victoria's voice broke.
“After he knew he was dying, he made a recording.””
Nathaniel stared.
“Where is it?””
Victoria whispered,
“I hid it.””
Samantha stepped closer.
“For twenty years?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he named the people responsible.””
Nathaniel's expression hardened.
“Who?””
Victoria looked at the key in Samantha's hand.
“Your grandfather.””
She hesitated.
“And me.””
Samantha stopped breathing.
Victoria continued through tears.
“But there was one other name on that recording.””
The mansion fell silent.
Samantha stared at her.
“Whose?””
Victoria looked directly at Ethan.
His face remained unreadable.
May you like
Then Victoria said,
“Ethan's father.””
