Chapter 8: The Last Recording of Daniel Hale

Nobody breathed.

Daniel Hale’s face filled every screen in the mansion.

The man who had become a legend inside the Russo family.

The man whose death had been used as a weapon.

The man whose name had destroyed my marriage.

Now he was speaking from beyond the grave.

“I don’t know who will see this recording.””

His voice was older than I remembered from photographs.

But steady.

“If you are watching this, I am likely dead.””

Rebecca started crying.

“No…”

Alexander didn’t move.

He looked like the world had stopped making sense.

Daniel continued.

“I need the truth protected. Not the Russo name. Not the company. Not the empire.””

His eyes looked directly into the camera.

“Truth.””

Margaret turned toward the screen.

“Turn it off.””

Nobody moved.

The guard hesitated.

Because even he wanted to hear.

Daniel continued.

“For years, I believed success was measured by what you built.””

A pause.

“Then I discovered what we had built.””

The screen changed.

Documents appeared.

Financial records.

Contracts.

Names.

I recognized them.

The same ones I had found.

“Russo Global was being used to hide illegal operations.””

Alexander closed his eyes.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“I confronted the person responsible.””

The screen showed a file.

A signature.

Margaret Russo.

Rebecca gasped.

“No.””

Margaret’s expression remained cold.

“Fake.””

But nobody believed her.

Not anymore.

Alexander stared.

“My mother?””

Daniel’s recording continued.

“Margaret was not working alone.””

The screen changed.

Another name appeared.

Everyone froze.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone inside Russo Global.

Someone close.

Someone powerful.

Someone who had benefited from Daniel’s death.

Alexander whispered:

“Impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

The name on the screen was his father’s oldest business partner.

The man Alexander had trusted after inheriting the company.

The man who helped turn Russo Global into the empire it became.

Victor Moretti.

Margaret looked furious.

“Daniel was paranoid.””

Alexander finally turned toward her.

“Was he?””

She looked at him.

“You would believe a dead man over your own mother?””

Alexander’s silence answered.

That hurt her.

I saw it.

For the first time, Margaret Russo wasn’t in control.

The recording continued.

“Alexander, if you are seeing this…”

Everyone froze.

Daniel was speaking directly to him.

“I am sorry.””

Alexander stepped closer to the screen.

Daniel’s expression softened.

“You always wanted to believe the best in people.””

A pause.

“That was your greatest strength.””

Then:

“And your greatest weakness.””

Alexander looked broken.

“Your mother will tell you she did everything for the family.””

Daniel’s voice became serious.

“She will say she protected you.””

The screen showed Margaret’s face.

“She did not protect you.””

Silence.

“She protected herself.””

Margaret suddenly moved.

“Enough.””

She reached for the control panel.

But Alexander grabbed her wrist.

“No.””

The command was quiet.

But absolute.

She stared at him.

“You would choose them?””

Alexander looked at me.

At Ethan.

At Rebecca.

Then back at his mother.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

For a second, Margaret looked like she didn’t recognize him.

Then her expression changed.

Cold.

Empty.

“Then you are no longer my son.””

The words should have hurt.

But Alexander only looked tired.

“Maybe I stopped being your son when you helped take mine away.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

Ten years ago, Ethan wasn’t just taken from me.

He was taken from Alexander too.

The recording reached its final part.

Daniel appeared again.

“If Claire is there, listen carefully.””

My heart stopped.

“Claire.””

His voice said my name.

“You were right.””

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

“You found the payments. You found the connections.””

The screen showed copies of my old investigation.

“But you were never given the chance to finish.””

I looked at Alexander.

He looked at me.

“I am sorry they made you pay for discovering the truth.””

Daniel continued.

“One day, the person responsible will try to destroy every piece of evidence.””

The video flickered.

“And they will try to destroy the person who knows the most.””

A pause.

“That person is not me.””

The screen went black.

Then one final line appeared.

A location.

A date.

And a name.

Rebecca stepped closer.

Her face turned white.

“That’s…”

Alexander looked.

“What?””

Rebecca whispered:

“That’s where my father died.””

The mansion went silent.

Then Alexander’s phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

He answered.

A security officer’s voice came through.

“Mr. Russo.””

“What?””

“We found something outside.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“A vehicle abandoned near the property.””

Alexander’s face changed.

“Whose vehicle?””

The officer hesitated.

“Your father’s old car.””

Impossible.

Daniel Hale had been dead for decades.

But then the officer said the words that made my blood freeze.

“Mr. Russo…”

May you like

A pause.

“There’s someone inside.””
