Chapter 6: The Name Hidden in the Files
For ten years, I believed Rebecca Hale was the center of the lie.
I believed she planned everything.
The accusations.
The evidence.
The destruction of my marriage.
But standing in the Russo mansion, watching Rebecca Hale look afraid for the first time, I realized something terrifying.
Maybe Rebecca was never the mastermind.
Maybe she was only a piece.
Alexander dismissed everyone from the office.
Only the three of us remained.
Me.
Alexander.
Rebecca.
The woman who had taken my life apart.
“Start talking,” Alexander said.
Rebecca looked at him.
“I don’t know everything.””
“That’s not good enough.””
Her eyes moved to me.
“You really think I wanted you gone?””
I almost laughed.
“I know you did.””
She looked down.
“No.””
That answer surprised me.
“No?””
“I wanted Alexander to choose me.””
The honesty was unexpected.
“But I never expected things to go this far.””
I stared at her.
“Explain.””
Rebecca sat down.
For the first time, she didn’t look like a queen.
She looked tired.
“When Daniel died, Margaret took me in.””
Alexander’s expression softened slightly.
“She treated me like family.””
Rebecca nodded.
“But she also controlled everything.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She decided what I wore. Who I spoke to. What my future would be.””
Alexander looked confused.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Rebecca laughed sadly.
“Because you never saw it.””
That hit him.
“You were so focused on protecting me because of my father that you never noticed I needed protection from someone else.””
The room went silent.
I didn’t forgive her.
I couldn’t.
But I listened.
Because the truth mattered more than revenge.
“What happened ten years ago?”” I asked.
Rebecca looked at me.
“Margaret came to me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she say?””
“She said you were dangerous.””
I stared.
“She told me you were trying to replace me.””
“That’s insane.””
“Yes.””
Rebecca’s voice cracked.
“I knew it was.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“Then why did you help her?””
Rebecca looked away.
“Because she had something.””
“What?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Proof that my father’s death wasn’t what I thought.””
Alexander froze.
“What?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled.
“She told me Daniel didn’t die in an accident.””
Nobody moved.
The room became silent.
“My father was investigating Russo Global before he died.””
Alexander’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“After he died, Margaret made sure nobody searched.””
I watched Alexander.
The pain on his face was real.
This wasn’t an act.
Not this time.
“What does this have to do with me?”” I asked.
Rebecca looked at me.
“Margaret wanted you gone because you were the only person who could influence Alexander.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because you asked questions.””
That was the truth.
I remembered.
Even before everything happened, I had noticed things.
Missing records.
Unusual transactions.
Companies connected in strange ways.
I had told Alexander.
He always dismissed it.
“Rebecca,” I said slowly, “who paid Margaret?””
She looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
“You must know something.””
She hesitated.
Then reached into her pocket.
She removed a small key.
“I found this two years ago.””
Alexander stared.
“What is it?””
“A safety deposit box.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why didn’t you open it?””
“Because Margaret found out I had the key.””
Rebecca placed it on the desk.
“And she told me if I ever opened it, she would make sure Alexander lost everything.””
Alexander picked up the key.
His hand was shaking.
“What’s inside?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“I think it’s the reason your life was destroyed.””
Before anyone could move, the office door slammed open.
Margaret Russo stood there.
Elegant.
Calm.
The same woman who had looked at me ten years ago and said I had embarrassed the family.
But now…
She looked angry.
“How interesting.””
Alexander turned.
“Mother.””
Her eyes went to the key.
Then to Rebecca.
“You really should have stayed quiet.””
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
Alexander stepped forward.
“What did you do?””
Margaret smiled.
A cold, controlled smile.
The same smile I remembered from the night she took my baby away.
“I protected this family.””
“No,” I said.
She looked at me.
“I protected my son.””
Alexander’s voice was dangerous.
“Mother.””
Margaret ignored him.
“You think you know the truth?””
She laughed softly.
“You have no idea what your father built.””
Alexander froze.
“My father?””
Margaret looked at me.
Then whispered:
“Ask Claire what she found ten years ago.””
Every eye turned toward me.
I felt my heartbeat change.
Because there was something I had never told Alexander.
Something I buried after I lost Ethan.
A discovery I made before Rebecca accused me.
A file.
A name.
A secret connection I couldn’t explain.
Margaret smiled.
“Tell him.””
I looked at Alexander.
And I knew the truth was finally coming out.
But when I spoke the next words…
Everything would change.
“Your father didn’t die because of an accident.””
Alexander stared at me.
“What are you saying?””
I took a breath.
“Ten years ago, I found proof that someone inside Russo Global had him killed.””
Nobody moved.
Then Margaret whispered:
“And now you finally understand why you had to disappear.””
At that moment, every light in the mansion went out again.
And this time…
