Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Marriage
The recording ended.
But my father’s words stayed.
He knew Nora would trust you.
I replayed that sentence over and over.
Not because I didn’t understand it.
Because I did.
And that was the part that hurt.
For years, I had asked myself one question.
Why had Pierce chosen me?
Now I was asking something much darker.
Had he chosen me at all?
I sat alone in the living room, staring at the phone in my hand.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
Usually, this was the hour when Pierce would walk downstairs and find me awake with a baby monitor beside me.
Usually, he would make coffee.
Usually, he would kiss my forehead and tell me he was lucky.
Now every memory felt like a photograph with something hidden behind it.
A detail I had missed.
A shadow I ignored.
My father had known.
That was what I couldn’t escape.
My father had looked at Pierce and seen something I didn’t.
The man who spent his entire life protecting me had met the person I loved and warned him.
I heard footsteps.
I didn’t turn around.
“I know you’re awake.””
Pierce’s voice.
I kept looking at the phone.
“You should sleep.””
“I can’t.””
“Neither can I.””
Silence.
He stood a few feet away.
For once, he didn’t try to come closer.
Maybe he finally understood that distance was something I needed.
“Did you listen to it?””
“Yes.””
His breath left slowly.
“Nora…”
“What did my father mean?””
He didn’t answer.
“Pierce.””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at him.
“Try again.””
His face tightened.
“I don’t know everything.””
“That’s not the same answer.””
He sat down across from me.
For the first time since I had known him, Pierce Camden looked defeated.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just tired.
“I met Daniel before I met you.””
“I know.””
“He told me about Aldercrest.””
“I know.””
“He told me your father was looking for someone who could modernize the company.””
I watched him.
“And he told you about me.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Pierce looked down.
“Because he knew you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“He knew you were your father’s daughter.””
The room felt colder.
“But I never told you.””
“No.””
“Because Daniel told you.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
A painful truth settled over me.
Daniel had not just introduced Pierce to Aldercrest.
He had introduced Pierce to me.
“Did he tell you to pursue me?””
Pierce immediately looked up.
“No.””
The answer was quick.
Too quick.
But this time, I believed him.
“Then what did he say?””
Pierce hesitated.
“He said you were different.””
I almost smiled.
“Different.””
“He said you didn’t care about wealth.””
I looked away.
“Did he say I controlled the trust?””
“No.””
“Did he know?””
“I think he suspected.””
That word.
Suspected.
Everyone was always suspecting things around me.
Everyone except me.
“What happened after we started dating?””
Pierce was quiet.
Then:
“Daniel disappeared.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“After I got close to you, he stopped contacting me directly.””
“Why?””
“I thought he lost interest.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
Pierce looked at me.
“He was waiting.””
“For what?””
His expression darkened.
“For me to become someone you trusted.””
The words hurt.
Even though they were not exactly a confession.
Because they were close enough.
The next morning, Jonathan called an emergency meeting.
Not at Aldercrest.
Somewhere neutral.
A private conference room downtown.
When I arrived, I was surprised to see Pierce already there.
And beside him…
Marissa.
I stopped.
Pierce stood.
“She’s here because she has information.””
I looked at Marissa.
“About Daniel?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I sat across from her.
“Start.””
Marissa took a breath.
“I lied to you.””
I wasn’t expecting that.
“About what?””
“When I told you Pierce was building a new life.””
She looked ashamed.
“I knew more than I admitted.””
Pierce looked at her.
“Marissa.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You need to hear this.””
Then she looked at me.
“I thought Pierce was using you.””
The honesty was surprising.
“I thought he married you because Daniel wanted him close to Aldercrest.””
My chest tightened.
“But?””
She swallowed.
“But then I saw how he was with you.””
I said nothing.
“I saw him with the babies.””
Her voice softened.
“And I realized he actually loved you.””
I looked at Pierce.
He didn’t look at me.
Marissa continued.
“That didn’t excuse what he did.””
“No,” I said.
She nodded.
“No.””
A long silence passed.
Then she opened a folder.
“I found these after the board investigation started.””
She placed several printed pages on the table.
“What are they?””
“Messages.””
“Between who?””
She looked at Pierce.
“Daniel and someone else.””
Jonathan picked up the pages.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?””
He read faster.
Then slower.
“Nora.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He turned the pages around.
The messages were short.
But clear.
Daniel had been communicating with another person inside Aldercrest.
Someone with access.
Someone powerful.
And at the bottom of the last message was a name.
Eleanor Whitmore.
My aunt.
I stared.
“No.””
Jonathan immediately shook his head.
“We need to verify.””
“That’s my aunt.””
“I know.””
“She raised me after my father died.””
“I know.””
Pierce looked stunned.
“I didn’t know about this.””
I looked at him.
For once, I believed him.
Because he looked genuinely shocked.
Marissa whispered:
“There’s more.””
She handed me another document.
It was an internal report.
Aldercrest security review.
I read the first line.
*Unauthorized access attempt detected: Whitmore Family Trust records.*
The date.
The date was three months after my father’s death.
I looked at Jonathan.
“Someone tried to access the trust.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t need to.
Everyone looked at the same page.
The access request was submitted under an executive account.
The account belonged to:
Daniel Whitmore.
My hands shook.
“So Daniel tried to access the trust after my father died.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t anyone stop him?””
Jonathan’s face was grim.
“Because the request was buried.””
“By who?””
No one answered.
The room became painfully quiet.
Then Pierce spoke.
“Eleanor.””
Everyone looked at him.
He shook his head.
“I’m not saying she did it.””
“Then what are you saying?””
He looked at the documents.
“I’m saying Daniel couldn’t bury something like this alone.””
My mind raced.
The pieces were moving.
Daniel.
Pierce.
The altered documents.
The trust access.
My father’s warning.
But one piece still didn’t fit.
My father.
Why had he trusted Pierce enough to leave him the envelope?
Why had he chosen Pierce as someone who needed to know?
Unless…
I looked at Pierce.
“Read the rest of the recording.””
His face changed.
“What?””
“The one from my father.””
“Nora—”
“You stopped before the end.””
He froze.
I knew immediately.
“You heard more.””
Pierce looked away.
“You heard something after he said Daniel chose you.””
The silence confirmed it.
My voice became quiet.
“What did my father say?””
Pierce closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
“He told me if anything happened to him…”
He stopped.
“Say it.””
His voice cracked.
“He told me to protect you.””
I stared.
“Protect me from who?””
Pierce looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw real fear.
Not fear of losing his title.
Not fear of losing money.
Fear of something much bigger.
“Nora…”
“Who?””
He swallowed.
“Your family.””
The room went silent.
My heart stopped.
“My family?””
Pierce nodded slowly.
“Your father believed Daniel wasn’t the only person involved.””
I looked at the documents.
At the names.
At the secrets.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
From the unknown number.
One sentence.
One sentence that changed everything.
*Stop searching for the person who betrayed you. Start asking why your father chose to die protecting them.*
I stared at the screen.
Because suddenly I understood.
The truth wasn’t just hidden.
Someone had spent years making sure I never found it.
May you like
And whoever that person was…
They were still watching me.
