Chapter 5: The Secret Partner
I stared at the photo until my phone screen dimmed.
Then I touched it again.
The image returned.
Pierce stood outside a restaurant I recognized.
Not recently.
Not from last week.
The photo was older.
Months older.
He was wearing the navy suit I remembered because it was the one I bought him for our anniversary.
Across from him sat a man.
A man I knew.
My hands went cold.
Because the person sitting across from my husband wasn’t a stranger.
It was Daniel Whitmore.
My cousin.
My father’s nephew.
The man who had stood beside me at my father’s funeral.
The man who hugged me afterward and told me, “Whatever happens, I’ll protect what Uncle Richard built.””
For a moment, my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Daniel.
Pierce.
Together.
A secret meeting.
I looked at the message again.
*You think Pierce betrayed you alone? You have no idea who helped him.*
The elevator doors closed behind me.
I was alone.
Finally.
And somehow that felt worse.
Because there was no one else to blame my confusion on.
No noise.
No board members.
No executives watching.
Just me and a truth I wasn’t ready to understand.
The elevator reached the lobby.
I walked out without seeing anyone.
Outside Aldercrest headquarters, the city was moving like nothing had happened.
Cars passed.
People rushed to meetings.
Coffee shops filled with strangers starting normal days.
Meanwhile, my entire world had changed.
I called Jonathan.
He answered immediately.
“Nora?””
“Did you know?””
A pause.
“Know what?””
“About Daniel.””
Silence.
That was enough.
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You knew.””
Jonathan sighed.
“I suspected.””
“You suspected my cousin was working with Pierce?””
“I suspected there was another person involved.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because suspicion is not proof.””
I looked back at the building.
The glass tower reflected the sky above me.
Aldercrest had always looked untouchable.
Beautiful.
Perfect.
But now I knew what could exist behind polished walls.
Secrets.
Lies.
Ambition.
“Jonathan,” I said quietly.
“Yes?””
“I need the truth.””
Another pause.
Then his voice changed.
Serious.
“Come to my office.””
“I’m coming.””
Jonathan’s private office was on the top floor of an older building across the street from Aldercrest.
Unlike Pierce’s office, there was no glass wall showing off the city.
No expensive furniture.
No awards displayed.
Just shelves of legal files and decades of history.
It felt more honest.
When I entered, Jonathan was standing near his desk.
He didn’t look surprised.
“You found out.””
I held up my phone.
“Explain.””
He looked at the photo.
Then closed his eyes briefly.
“I was afraid this would happen.””
“What does that mean?””
He gestured toward a chair.
“Sit down.””
“I don’t want to sit down.””
“Nora.””
The way he said my name made me stop.
Not because he was commanding me.
Because he sounded tired.
Like he had been carrying information he hated holding.
I sat.
Jonathan placed a file in front of me.
“This is your father’s original trust agreement.””
I frowned.
“I’ve seen it.””
“Not all of it.””
He opened the folder.
“There was a second clause.””
I looked down.
The legal language blurred for a moment.
“What clause?””
“One your father added six months before his death.””
I read the page.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“Your father anticipated a situation where someone close to you might attempt to gain control of Aldercrest.””
I looked up.
“He wrote that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Jonathan hesitated.
“Because he knew how powerful the company was.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
He looked away.
“Nora, your father was a brilliant businessman.””
I waited.
“He was also a very observant man.””
A chill moved through me.
“You’re saying he suspected Pierce?””
“No.””
Jonathan’s answer came quickly.
“He never met Pierce with suspicion.””
“Then who?””
He didn’t respond.
I already knew.
“Daniel.””
Jonathan remained silent.
My chest tightened.
“My father suspected Daniel?””
“He was concerned about Daniel’s relationship with certain investors.””
“What investors?””
Jonathan opened another document.
Names.
Companies.
Transactions.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Because one name appeared repeatedly.
Camden Holdings.
I looked at Jonathan.
“Pierce’s family?””
“Yes.””
I stood.
“No.””
Jonathan watched me carefully.
“No?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“Why?””
“Because Pierce told me his family had nothing to do with Aldercrest.””
Jonathan’s expression was painful.
“Nora.””
“What?””
“He may have believed that.””
The words bothered me.
Because they suggested something I didn’t want to consider.
Maybe Pierce wasn’t the beginning of this.
Maybe he was part of something bigger.
I looked at the documents again.
“Tell me everything.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Your father believed someone was attempting to slowly influence Aldercrest from the outside.””
“Through Daniel?””
“Possibly.””
“And Pierce?””
“He was the person who gained access.””
I felt sick.
Not because I was surprised.
Because I was starting to understand.
The promotion.
The trust questions.
The pressure.
The urgency.
It wasn’t random.
It was a plan.
But there was one thing I couldn’t understand.
“Why me?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“What do you mean?””
“Why did they think I would give up control?””
He was quiet.
Then he said:
“Because they underestimated you.””
I laughed softly.
A sad sound.
“Everyone did.””
That afternoon, I returned home.
The house felt unfamiliar.
Not because anything had changed.
Because I had.
The photos on the walls looked different.
Pierce and me on our wedding day.
Pierce holding my hand at the hospital after Lily and Noah were born.
Pierce smiling while painting the nursery.
Memories that once felt warm now felt like evidence from another life.
I walked into the kitchen.
The same kitchen where he used to practice speeches.
The same table where we dreamed about the future.
I placed my phone down.
Then I heard the front door.
My body immediately tensed.
Pierce.
A few seconds later, he walked in.
He looked exhausted.
His suit jacket was gone.
His tie was loose.
For the first time in a long time, he looked like the man from years ago.
The man without power.
The man I fell in love with.
“Nora.””
I didn’t answer.
He walked closer.
“Can we talk?””
“We have been talking.””
His face tightened.
“Not like this.””
“Like what?””
“Like enemies.””
I looked at him.
“Are we not?””
Pain crossed his face.
“No.””
“Pierce, you lied to me.””
“I made mistakes.””
“You tried to take control of my family’s company.””
His jaw tightened.
“That’s not what I wanted.””
“Then what did you want?””
He looked away.
For a moment, I thought he would finally tell the truth.
Instead, he said:
“I wanted security.””
I stared.
“Security?””
“Yes.””
“For who?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“For you?””
Silence.
“For your reputation?””
Nothing.
“For Daniel?””
His head snapped up.
And there it was.
The reaction.
Small.
But enough.
“You know about Daniel.””
It wasn’t a question.
I felt my heart sink.
“You were going to tell me?””
“Nora—”
“You knew.””
He rubbed his face.
“I didn’t want you involved.””
“Too late.””
He looked at me.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Then finally whispered:
“Daniel came to me first.””
The room went still.
“What?””
“He said he could help me secure my position.””
My stomach twisted.
“And you agreed.””
“I thought he was helping.””
“You thought?””
His silence answered.
I walked away.
Because suddenly I wasn’t just dealing with betrayal.
I was dealing with the fact that my husband had been willing to gamble with my family’s legacy because someone promised him power.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
I saw the name.
Daniel.
Pierce declined immediately.
Too late.
I had seen it.
“Why would he call you now?””
Pierce looked nervous.
“I don’t know.””
A second later, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
The same number that sent the photo.
I answered.
No greeting.
No introduction.
Just a voice.
A woman’s voice.
And the first words she said made my blood run cold.
“Nora, if you want to know why your father really changed the trust…”
I froze.
The woman continued.
“You need to ask Pierce what happened the night your father died.””
My fingers went numb.
“What?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Because your husband knows more about that night than he ever told you.””
The call ended.
I looked at Pierce.
He was staring at me.
May you like
And this time…
He looked terrified.
