Chapter 8: The Promise Thomas Made

The document lay in the snow between us.

Nobody reached for it.

Not Garrett.

Not me.

Not even Victor.

It was as if all of us understood that touching that piece of paper meant touching the truth.

And sometimes the truth was the most dangerous thing a person could hold.

Garrett stared at the document.

His face had gone completely still.

“Pick it up,” Victor said.

The calmness in his voice made my skin crawl.

“Go ahead, Garrett.””

Garrett didn’t move.

Victor smiled.

“Still pretending you don’t know what it says?””

Garrett’s eyes lifted.

“You are a liar.””

“Maybe.””

Victor shrugged.

“But you haven’t called me wrong.””

The words struck harder than any accusation.

Because Garrett didn’t deny it.

He couldn’t.

I looked at him.

“Garrett.””

He turned.

The storm blew between us.

“What is that?””

For a moment, I saw the man from earlier.

The powerful ranch owner.

The man who never hesitated.

Then he looked away.

And I knew.

He was afraid.

Not of Victor.

Not of the gun hidden beneath his coat.

Of me.

Of what I would think when I knew.

“I should have told you.””

My chest tightened.

“Told me what?””

Garrett stepped forward slowly.

“I made a promise to Thomas.””

The world seemed to narrow.

“My husband?””

“Yes.””

The answer burned.

“You knew Thomas?””

Garrett nodded.

“Before you.””

I felt like the ground beneath me shifted.

“How?””

Garrett looked toward the document.

“Because Thomas came to me.””

“When?””

“After Clara disappeared.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

It couldn’t be.

Thomas had always told me he was just a simple man.

A farmer.

A quiet man who wanted nothing more than a peaceful life.

But now every piece of my life seemed to have another side.

“He knew about Penny,” Garrett said.

I looked at him.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

“I knew she existed.””

My breath caught.

“But I didn’t know where she was.””

Victor watched us with satisfaction.

Like a man enjoying a fire he had started.

Garrett continued.

“Thomas came to my ranch one night.””

His voice became distant.

“He was carrying Penny.””

I closed my eyes.

A picture formed in my mind.

A younger Thomas.

A baby Penny.

A frightened man trying to protect a child.

“When I saw her,” Garrett said, “I knew.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“She had Clara’s eyes.””

My heart hurt.

“Then why didn’t you take her?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Garrett looked at me.

“Because Thomas asked me not to.””

The snow fell harder.

“What?””

“He told me you loved her.””

I stared.

“He told me you were the mother she needed.””

Garrett swallowed.

“He said Clara trusted you.””

I shook my head.

“But why would he keep me from knowing?””

Garrett looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Victor laughed.

“Of course you don’t.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Victor leaned back on his horse.

“That was Thomas’s greatest trick.””

Garrett’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know Thomas.””

“I knew him better than you think.””

The words made me freeze.

Victor continued.

“Thomas Miller was not some innocent farmer caught in the middle.””

My hands clenched.

“Do not speak about my husband like that.””

Victor looked at me.

“You should ask yourself why a man with no connection to Clara suddenly appeared with her child.””

“Enough.””

Garrett’s voice cut through the storm.

Victor ignored him.

“Ask yourself why he changed his name.””

Silence.

I stared.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“There it is.””

Garrett’s expression hardened.

“Do not listen to him.””

But my eyes stayed on Victor.

“What did you say?””

Victor reached into his coat again.

This time he pulled out a small envelope.

“Your husband wasn’t Thomas Miller.””

The words felt impossible.

“That was the name he gave you.””

My hands began to shake.

“No.””

Victor opened the envelope.

“His real name was Thomas Ward.””

The world stopped.

I looked at Elias.

He had gone pale.

Because he knew.

“Elias?””

He didn’t answer.

“Elias.””

Slowly, he looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

That hurt more than anything.

Because it meant Victor was telling the truth.

I turned toward Garrett.

“You knew?””

Garrett looked devastated.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I knew Thomas had changed his name.””

“But not why?””

“No.””

I searched his face.

And somehow, impossibly, I believed him.

Because Garrett looked just as betrayed as I felt.

Victor smiled.

“Everyone lied to you, Sarah.””

The way he said my name made me hate him.

Like he had earned the right to speak it.

“You were the only person who didn’t know.””

I stepped forward.

“Where is Penny?””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“There she is.””

“What?””

“The only question that matters.””

His eyes hardened.

“You don’t care about secrets. You don’t care about names. You care about your daughter.””

“Yes.””

“Then come with me.””

Garrett immediately moved.

“No.””

Victor laughed.

“There’s the Garrett everyone knows.””

Garrett stepped in front of me.

“You will not touch her.””

Victor looked amused.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That Penny was never the prize.””

The wind stopped.

Victor looked at Garrett.

“The secret she carries is.””

My stomach tightened.

“What secret?””

Nobody answered.

Victor looked at Elias.

Then at Garrett.

“Tell her.””

Garrett’s face changed.

“Tell her what Clara found.””

Elias looked away.

Victor smiled.

“Exactly.””

I looked between them.

“What did Clara find?””

Garrett said nothing.

That terrified me.

“Garrett.””

His eyes met mine.

And I saw regret.

“She discovered that Victor wasn’t acting alone.””

Victor’s smile faded.

“Careful.””

Garrett continued.

“She discovered someone inside my ranch was helping him.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Silence.

Then Garrett looked at Elias.

No.

Not Elias.

Please.

Elias stepped forward.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

Garrett’s expression broke.

“What did you do?””

Elias’s eyes filled with pain.

“I thought I could control it.””

“Control what?””

Elias looked at me.

“The information.””

The words came slowly.

“The land records. The business deals. The evidence Clara found.””

My blood ran cold.

“You worked with Victor?””

Elias closed his eyes.

“For a short time.””

Garrett looked like he had been betrayed all over again.

“You were the reason she was afraid.””

“No.””

Elias shook his head.

“I tried to fix it.””

“You helped him.””

“I was trying to get close enough to stop him.””

Garrett laughed bitterly.

“And Clara paid the price.””

Elias had no answer.

Because maybe he knew.

Maybe he had always known.

Victor watched the destruction with satisfaction.

Then he said:

“Now you understand why Clara left.””

Garrett turned.

“You don’t get to use her memory.””

Victor shrugged.

“She left because she knew the people closest to her were dangerous.””

His eyes moved to me.

“She trusted Thomas.””

Then to Garrett.

“She feared you.””

The words cut.

But before Garrett could respond, a sound came from behind Victor.

A small voice.

“Momma?””

My entire body froze.

No.

I turned.

At the edge of the road, sitting in the back of a wagon, was Penny.

Alive.

Safe.

But beside her stood another person.

An older woman wrapped in a dark shawl.

And the moment I saw her face, I forgot how to breathe.

Because I knew that face.

Not because I had seen it before.

Because Penny had it.

The same eyes.

The same gentle expression.

The same impossible familiarity.

The woman looked at Garrett.

And tears filled her eyes.

“Garrett.””

He went completely still.

The world around us disappeared.

May you like

Because the woman everyone believed was dead had just spoken.

“Clara.””
