Thinking

Chapter 6: The Promise Made at the Edge of the Storm

The storm swallowed Garrett Thorne before anyone could follow.

One moment he was standing in the doorway, his coat pulled tight around him, his face set with a determination I had never seen before.

The next moment, he was gone.

Only the sound of the wind remained.

I stared at the empty doorway.

A strange feeling settled in my chest.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Something closer to anger mixed with worry.

Because Garrett Thorne had spent years believing he had to carry every burden alone.

And men like that were the most likely to walk straight into danger without thinking about who would be left behind.

“Where is he going?”” I asked.

Elias grabbed his own coat.

“To find Victor.””

“That’s foolish.””

Elias paused.

I looked at him.

“He knows Victor is dangerous. He knows someone is searching for Penny. And he still walks out there alone?””

Elias gave a tired smile.

“You sound like Clara.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

He looked toward the storm.

“Clara used to say Garrett’s greatest strength was also his greatest weakness.””

I frowned.

“What did she mean?””

“That he would stand in front of a charging bull without hesitation.””

Elias pulled on his gloves.

“But he would forget that someone else might want to stand beside him.””

I looked at Penny.

She was sitting near the fire, holding the wooden horse Garrett had given her without even realizing it.

My heart tightened.

I had spent years teaching her that the world could be cruel.

But I had also taught her something else.

That kindness still existed.

That people could change.

And somehow, despite everything, I believed Garrett Thorne was trying.

“Stay with her,” I said.

Elias stopped.

“What?””

“I’m going after him.””

His eyebrows rose.

“Mrs. Miller—”

“Sarah.””

He blinked.

I continued.

“My name is Sarah.””

For some reason, that seemed important.

Not Mrs. Miller.

Not the widow.

Not the woman begging for a job.

Just Sarah.

Elias studied me for a moment.

Then he nodded.

“Clara would have liked you.””

I ignored the strange warmth that comment caused.

“I’m not doing this because of Clara.””

“I know.””

“I’m doing it because Penny needs her father alive.””

Elias looked at the little girl.

Then back at me.

“Be careful.””

I grabbed my coat.

“I’ve been careful my whole life.””

I opened the door.

“Tonight, I need to be brave.””

The cold hit like a wall.

Snow immediately covered my boots.

The path from the house to the ranch road was already disappearing beneath the storm.

I pulled my scarf higher and followed the tracks Garrett had left behind.

The world was almost completely white.

The kind of white that made distance disappear.

The kind of white that made a person realize how small they truly were.

But I kept walking.

Because somewhere ahead was a man who had spent years running from his mistakes.

And now he was running toward his daughter.

I found him near the old cattle shed.

He was standing beside a horse, speaking with one of his ranch hands.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Garrett said when he saw me.

No greeting.

No surprise.

Just concern.

I almost laughed.

“You’re worried about me?””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

That surprised me.

“You walked into a blizzard alone.””

“I know what I’m doing.””

“And I don’t?””

His mouth opened.

Then closed.

A small victory.

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide who protects Penny.””

Garrett’s expression changed.

“I never wanted her in danger.””

“She was in danger the moment Victor knew about her.””

He looked away.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You know now.””

The wind howled between us.

“For years, you didn’t know she existed.””

Pain crossed his face.

“And I can’t change that.””

“No.””

I softened slightly.

“You can’t.””

The honesty hurt.

But he didn’t run from it.

That mattered.

Garrett looked toward the dark road.

“Victor wants something.””

“Control.””

“Yes.””

“Money?””

“More than money.””

He looked at me.

“He wants revenge.””

“For what?””

Garrett was silent.

Then he said:

“For losing.””

I waited.

“He believed Clara ruined him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she do?””

“She exposed his dealings. She gave evidence to the authorities.””

“And then?””

“She disappeared before she could testify.””

The pieces started connecting.

“But Victor thinks she took something from him.””

Garrett nodded.

“His reputation. His power.””

“And now he thinks Penny is the last thing Clara left behind.””

“Yes.””

I looked back toward the ranch house.

Toward my daughter.

“He won’t get her.””

Garrett looked at me.

There was something different in his eyes.

Respect.

“You really believe that.””

“I know that.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Garrett said something quietly.

“Clara was like you.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“She never backed down.””

A small smile touched his face.

“She used to stand in my office and tell me I was wrong.””

I looked away.

“Sounds familiar.””

Garrett almost smiled.

Almost.

Then a gunshot echoed through the night.

Everything changed.

Garrett moved instantly.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me behind the wooden wall.

“Stay down.””

My heart raced.

“Where did that come from?””

He listened.

Another shot.

Farther away.

Not aimed at us.

A signal.

Garrett’s face hardened.

“He’s here.””

“Victor?””

“No.””

His eyes moved toward the darkness.

“Someone working for him.””

The ranch hands appeared from behind the shed.

Garrett gave quick orders.

“Two men stay with the house.””

One ranch hand nodded.

“What about you?””

Garrett looked toward me.

Then toward the ranch.

“I’m going back.””

I frowned.

“You’re leaving?””

“I’m protecting Penny.””

“By running away from the threat?””

His eyes met mine.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“By making sure the threat can’t reach her.””

Before I could respond, one of the ranch hands came running.

“Mr. Thorne!””

Garrett turned.

“What?””

The man was pale.

“It’s the house.””

My blood froze.

“What about it?””

The ranch hand looked at me.

Then Garrett.

“Someone got inside.””

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then Garrett ran.

I ran after him.

The distance disappeared beneath our feet.

The storm screamed around us.

But all I could hear was one thought.

Penny.

Please let her be safe.

When we reached the house, the front door was open.

The fire still burned.

The room looked exactly as we had left it.

Except for one thing.

The wooden horse was lying on the floor.

Broken.

My breath stopped.

“Penny!””

My voice echoed through the house.

No answer.

I ran toward the stairs.

“Penny!””

Then I saw it.

A small piece of blue fabric caught on the edge of the doorway.

Her coat.

Garrett saw it too.

His entire face changed.

“No.””

It was the first time I heard true fear in his voice.

Not the fear of losing money.

Not the fear of losing his name.

The fear of losing his child.

He picked up the piece of fabric.

His hands shook.

Then Elias came running from the back hallway.

His face was white.

“Garrett.””

Garrett turned.

“Where is she?””

Elias couldn’t answer.

That was enough.

My knees nearly gave out.

“What happened?””

Elias looked at me.

“I was in the kitchen for less than a minute.””

His voice broke.

“When I came back…”

He stopped.

Garrett stepped forward.

“When you came back?””

Elias swallowed.

“She was gone.””

Silence.

Then Garrett noticed something on the table.

A folded piece of paper.

He walked toward it slowly.

Everyone watched.

He opened it.

Read the message.

And his face became empty.

“What does it say?”” I whispered.

Garrett handed it to me.

My fingers trembled as I read.

There were only a few words.

But they destroyed whatever hope we had left.

*If you want Clara’s daughter back, come alone.*

Beneath the message was one final line.

May you like

One that made Garrett stop breathing.

*Ask your brother why Clara really disappeared.*
